DCS Mudspike Session 23-AUG-25

Many thanks for hosting - I think I speak for all of us that we’d love to make it a more regular occurrence. Not all of us are competent…but it sure is fun having a group of friends flying around together. I was happy to only crash one Kiowa for the duration…but did not do much damage to the enemy…. And I wish I knew more about the logistics and how to do them…I heard someone dropping off a mortar team and @komemiute I think landed just before me and picked up that downed pilot. All great fun…!

Despite my lack of competency in the Kiowa, I had a blast.

Yeah that was also me ferrying things back and forth. :joy:

I was pleasantly surprised how manageable the distances were. Even the initial rendezvous over the sea and approach to the coastline was not as bad as I initially thought.

The amount of fun was inversely proportional to the amount of briefing that we read.
And we did some pretty good work despite making up stuff on the spot

Really makes me wonder what we could do with a concerted effort and a little more time.

I was also very very surprised at the stability of my connection - despite the occasional lag spike.

Same. I was stuck installing new rudder cables in the Pitts. Turned into a tricky job. (You know what they say “Measure twice and swage just once!”). But I when I saw this announced I knew it would be good. I almost considered skipping the hangar trip to participate. Probably should have. Glad you guys had a blast!

If @Wes is ok with it, maybe we can make Hollowpoint our go-to playground. I definitely would like to fly some Into the Jungle sorties as well though.

during the session, I did a complete @Harry_Bumcrack
I targetted a avenger with one of my APKWS rockets at about 3km … had a good hard lock, squeezed the trigger and woosh off it went … I continued watching the screen and lasing… some time passed, and my target had not disassembled itself in a firey ball of destruction. “Where the **** did that go” in an austrailian accent drifted through my mind, then i got a messaged that I had killed a fuel truck … I think my rocket lost track and picked up someone elses laser

Feel free! The running missions vary and have different levels of say - easy rotary wing integration - but almost all contain slots for it.

Running missions can be changed if needed though. Server is typically up 24/7 but I am not always immediately on hand to resolve things when updates come out or the server crashes.

DCS has been a memory hog of late on complex missions, eating up all 64GB of system memory on occasion (and event viewer showed it was trying to allocate 118GB….lol) so on the big two missions - Offensive Posture and Trivial Perplexion there is a slight chance of out-of-memory crash, if the server has already done a few playthroughs and restarted the mission a couple times.

From my very basic search it doesn’t seem possible (easily) to bring a Discord chat overlay or something into VR huh? I saw some workaround using OVR or something to bring it in via Steam…but I’m trying not to run Steam while running DCS.

That’s great…! If I’m not otherwise paged in to fly (I’m on call today)…I will be on this afternoon in a bit (say 1730-1800 UTC-ish…)

I was on for a couple of hours. But butt and my Bobo need a break. Maybe back on in a bit. Wonder if the damage and recon I did are persistent…

What server did you guys end up flying on? Time permitting I’ll see if I can drop in.

The server that Wes runs is called Hollo pointe North

@BeachAV8R No easy VR overlay with Discord. There is an overlay with SRS. I prefer it over Discord anyway. The only snag is that the moment you loss electrics (you crash) comms cease until you get started again.

Seems like a fair penalty…you can’t rat out the position of the unit that smote you… :joy:

HPN is running SRS, but I have shut off the auto-connect function as since we recently haven’t had as much activity, we mainly use Discord and the prompts on every slot change get annoying. So you’d have to note the IP before connecting to put in to SRS.

Yeah, peeking under your googles at Discord while the missiles are flying becomes tedious after a while.

I just did the best I could to remember voices and names but it was tricky. I am sure I messed up more then once with the crowd we had!
