Here’s some winter road base action from Finland. Not sure if it’s one of the Kola map locations.
Here’s my mission pack. Two missions; a scramble from Bodo and a strike on Murmansk. The multirole fighters get both, the strikers just Murmansk. Dump it in your DCS folder like you would a /backup.001/ after patching.
<meh can’t hang file on post. Guess y’all have to wait till it clears ED screening>
Some more footage showing quite a few areas
Looks like the Aussie Peso is doing about as well as the Yen… it works out to pretty much the same for me.
I really want this map and I had already uninstalled PG in anticipation, but might hold off until I get an idea of their ‘update cycle’… I am having a bit of a hiatus from DCS anyway.
Here you go my dudes:
Edit: Updated the thing with some red versions of the flights for MiG-19, -21, 29 and Su-27.
Added chapters to the video so you can skip through easier
After watching numerous videos showcasing the map I caved. For one, it’s ORBX. Two, I need to use the Viggen somewhere. Three, the exchange rate ain’t gonna get any better; the map could cost me 23 Big Macs if I wait any longer.
Weirdly I get absolutely terrible VR performance everywhere except Bodo, Lakselv, and Kiruna. The Russian bases and “BAS 100” in particular knock my VR framerates down into the 20s while I’m happily in the 40s on the Norwegian side of the map.
The mountains look amazing! Even from 30,000ft there’s a sense of speed and depth perception that I haven’t felt in any other map.
There’s a nice Viggen road base network at Jokkmokk, but the airfield is unmarked on the map and you’ll have to place them as starting from ground. Too bad it isn’t surrounded by pine trees…not sure what the deal is with all the deciduous trees in conifer zones.
Bas 100 is notoriously bad. I suspect the road textures of the part of the highway that’s used as a strip and the tarmac in the parking spots because as soon as I am on the ‘normal’ road between the highway strip and the parking spots performance is much better (still not great, but at least not abysmal).
The annoying thing is that the normal road that’s used as a taxiway looks way better and more natural than the high res textures in the parking spaces and the
road strip despite being much lower resolution.
I think its the trees more than anything that’s killing performance. Try lowering the trees view distance slider.
I did read somewhere that the dev acknowledged that the tree types were incorrect for the region but they had to use the default DCS Speed Trees because the conifer tree models were even worse for performance. They were looking at options for improving this.
This map is pretty rough even for a EA release in my opinion. I have performance issues, DCS hangs some times loading it and there are of course some quality issues. Its just such a cool region to have in DCS I want to love it but I’ll just have to be patient and wait for updates.
In comparison, I think Sinai released in a much better state than this map did. I’m really looking forward to the next planned update for that one also.
Nice tunes on that first video ![]()
Enigma shares some thoughts from a mission maker’s perspective.
TL;DW:
The map has great potential, but in its current state:
- distances between airfields are too large for the kind of multiplayer scenarios he runs.
- the tree coverage poses a problem for ground attack, as they block bombs quite effectively.
I hope the trees problem will get sorted, and I expect road bases will play a major role in this map. It’s not that hard to plonk them down in the Mission Editor.
A homage to old classic ![]()
*Too large for public multiplayer servers that focus on quick action, ftfh (fixed that for him). It’s already very nice for Squadron gameplay.
Yes, the distances are quite large and if you are time limited then this might be a problem but servers like 4YA prove that long travel distances can work even on public servers.
The map is huge and Bodø is probably too far off the beaten track for the average MP server but Rovaniemi to Murmansk is not that long a flight imho.
It’s not unusual to have organised squadrons fly 2-3 hour missions just to drop one or two bombs on a target (with extra steps of course, SEAD, DEAD, CAP
).
On another note, I heard the rumour that the water in the harbours was too shallow for ships, maybe thats true for the sub bases but at least Murmansk works.
Ropucha class landing ship leaving Murmansk harbour

My guess is many don’t want to do AR. I’m cool with that.
Or is it a technical online issue with the software?
And, according to the release info, more airports will come:
- Additional detailed military airfields, including Andøya, Bardufoss, Kirkenes, Evenes, Vidsel, Kilpyavr, Alakkurti, and others.
- Additional Cold War era Swedish and Finnish road runways.
- Additional civilian airports, including Tromsø, Hammerfest, Ivalo, Luleå, and others.
And, guessing from how they conduct the NATO excercises up here, you should place a carrier in the Vestfjord (between Bodø and the Lofoten islands) ![]()
So the map should be something like this.
(Not to be used for real world navigation) ![]()
In addition there will be some road bases…
Interesting spot for the carrier. They don’t have issues maneuvering into the wind in such a confined area?
