Here’s a squadron mug to go along with your Phantom.
I’m on the fence about the F-4 as well, but me love Growler, and occasional Hornet/Super Hornet, so me no want right now.
My eldest son was deployed with the last Prowlers of VMAQ-2, “Death Jesters.” He said they were being replaced by Growlers, but finished his tour just before the transition. He was looking forward to working on them.
I was a huge fan of Janes, F/A-18 which featured the E-model Hornet. Based on the Super Hornet platform, Growlers are simply bad-azz! Nuff Said. ![]()
EDIT: I reread my comment and realized it might imply that the Death Jesters transitioned to the Growler. The squadron was deactivated, but the Prowlers were replaced by Growlers. While some squadrons were converted, I’m not sure if VMAQ-2 was redesignated.
“Can Do Easy”
I didn’t know the Marines flew Growlers, never heard of that. Anyway yeah they’re fun to fly so far, even if it’s an unlicensed mod.
I have a bit of a turbulent relationship with the Phantom. It looks great on the outside, but in the cockpit it’s kinda “meh” for me. I tend to fly it for the challenge I guess.
I think that’s just how I feel about the F-4 in general. My experiences with the Strike Fighters 2 left me little to be desired. I always thought it looked great and had nice lines, but at the outset, using it as a bomb truck is like how I employ it, and even that gets boring after a while. I think overall I’ll hold off on it until I change my mind, but I’m really looking forward to the A-6E.
As a DCS module it is beyond compare. From the cockpit details to the huffer cart that spawns in, it is just :chefs kiss:
As an airplane, what can I say. Yes bomb truck or fighter that relies on speed and thrust. But also a seminal piece of aviation history that one should be familiar with in order to understand later trends and solutions. Going from phantom to hornet is eye opening.
Here’s some information on the squadron.

This wiki does a decent job detailing the squadron’s history up to its deactivation.
Thanks!
G O U R G E O U S ! !
Checked out Afghanistan last night. The map has come a long way. It honestly looks pretty amazing these days
Those are some amazing pics!
I had a toy Viggen and S35 Drakken as a kid. Loved them. Interestingly, I never bought the DCS Viggen, but I will try it when I get back from vacation.
I actually had a great pitch for the Viggen here:
Your screaming fast on the deck, popping up, rolling over, unloading rockets or ripping over a target to drop high-drag bombs.
The Viggen is a lot of fun. It’s also one of the simplest modules to pick up.
