I wouldn’t mind going back there…
ACS Podcast featuring Falklands Map
Ok, so just gave it a whirl, in VR. High/Low altitude in the Hornet.
TD/DR; So, out of the box it looks and performs good; the “World” is lifeless as usual, requiring much human intervention to resolve. I’m at the point I’d rather have more places to fly (and still waiting for maps of areas that played heavily in the 2nd half of the 20th century!) than aircraft modules - Phantom being the exception!. All things considered, I’m content with it.
Not sure what all the complaining is about (witness the CasmoTV YT video). Perhaps a little over-saturation on some colors (trees)? A few clicks using OVR/Toolkit made it all look ‘better’, to me. But I’ve never been to this part of the world. And this is a sparsely populated place. Just the way it seems to be.
Reminded me of flying around the Aleutian peninsula (Alaska) in a Beaver (as a passenger): mostly tundra (a girl behind every tree over 6 feet tall as we used to say there); zillion small lakes/ponds, interspersed with some really big lakes; too many rivers/creeks to count; the occasional volcano; etc.
Performance-wise same as any other map (starting on the ramp at the Falklands, through the mountains, etc). Note this box is dedicated to DCS (sims) and I regularly clean house to keep the bloat away.
I think Syria remains my fav, not that it is better per se. Is kind of apples to oranges. I like both.
Is it as pretty as FS2020? Don’t know as I don’t play that anymore. For a Combat flight sim it’s fine to me.
Coming up with a non-contrived scenario (other than the single obvious one) for an air war will be a trick; all I could think of was how ripe it is for littoral conflicts, and perhaps a CV -vs- CV set-to.
And I’m sure those that favor the Air Quake game-play will really dig it (it has its appeal): more Mountain Goat -V- Mountain Goat air combat groveling.
Didn’t know it was out yet. AnyDesk: launching…
While mine is downloading, jross, did you happen to look in the ME for new assets? Just wondering about HMS Invincible.
This looks promising.
Unfortunately, AnyDesk did some ugly things when I tried to load the ME, so didn’t get much further.
I heard they haven’t been release yet. Due to “issues” with ED? I didn’t look but will…now…standby…
Don’t forget to uninstall any of the community mods, like Hermes and Invincible beforehand. Unless you think that you will be able to tell the wheat from the chaff easily.
Nope not there. Only Ship under “UK” coalition is the Handy Wind. Hmmm, there’s a thing to try, with the Harrier
Yeah, I uninstalled most everything recently. A couple of updates ago found my install crashing, hard, to desktop. So I unloaded all but CAM and MAM. Scared to try adding in more
How’s the performance on the South Atlantic map? Comparable to Caucasus or is it more demanding like Marianas?
I’d say definitely easier on the system than the Marianas. Haven’t flown the Caucasus-sus map in a long time but my impression is same, maybe a tiny bit better? Closer to Syria maybe peformance-wise but, if the trend holds, it should improve. Best I can come up with was my quote above - nothing stood out good or bad concerning FPS/Smoothness for me.
EDIT[1]: I have an AMD 5900X, nVidia 3080Ti, 64GB memory. I run with reprojection and it never strayed from 45FPS (same for me on all maps). Didn’t turn it off to see the actual numbers.
On my old rig (2D, development machine) with a 1080 and old-ish CPU (i6700K) it gets about 120FPS.
This was just from a quick glance at the FPS counter when I sent the above screen shot (Handy Wind, a few posts up). But I keep the graphics low since I’m not really playing on that rig. It’s close to 200FPS on my 5900X/3080Ti machine, in 2D, external view, FWIW. My ‘ballpark’ expectations are to get, in VR, about 40% of the 2D FPS (3480x2160). Sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more.
I’m asking because on my rig I get 60 FPS on Caucasus and only nearly 30 on Marianas (same settings), so saying performance-wise is the same as any other map is not valid for my potato PC
having a quick flight to test over Argentina and i think strayed into Chile
took the Harrier out of its normal enviroment (ie not tree top) up to about 30000 feet
back to normal levels, about 500ft
with my system and settings the FPS stayed pegged at 36fps. I havent had a chance to try MP yet, or lob in a load of units, but so far the performance (for me anyway) seems very good, better than Syria
I think you’ll be ok (assuming 2D), and it should get better if they keep massaging it. I’ll have more as I get back into the mission dev stuff here soon - I run it [on that older rig] dozens of times a day so I’ll try to report back.
I was pegged at 36 fps with 70% reprojection
But smooth although i was in a huey as the only unit on the map. Cant wait to have a good explore and visit all the famouse battlefields like goose green mount tumbledown fitzroy and mount kent.
Lots of names from the age of 16 that stick in the mind
Created a quick mission, flew the Harrier off of the community mod Hemes, did some sight seeing, brought some friends with me, blew some stuff up. No sheep were harmed. The place looks just as I imagined it would.
Forgot to take screens until the end. Can’t figure out why my wingies didn’t drop their ord or why they landed downwind at Stanley. These questions are above my pay grade.
My two cents. Beautiful and good fps. Where are the missions? None ever ship with maps ED. No assets, Really? I would think a mission or two with some populated bases would be shipped with a new map. Maybe I am asking for too much? Call me crazy but the map did cost near 60 USD.
Now on the upside. I was flying at around 1000ft in the cloudy muck… Then the sun came through a hole in the clouds… It was MAGICAL. Well done RAZBAM!
The assets pack is supposed to be included but it’s simply not ready- when it will be finished you’ll find plenty of units! ^-^
I watch too much YTube. I thought the assets where in. Not a dealbreaker… The map is fab. Its not just pretty. Its a revolution when compared to any other map in DCS.
