Falkland airstrips marked by black dots and at settlements (real world)

We got the assets! I put together a simple mission. Just the Invincible and couple of cruisers. I practiced taking off and landing from the carrier for an hour or two. I made almost every touchdown but one. The Harrier, while complicated is not impossible.
The smoke from the ships adds a lot of immersion. Once I had takeoff and landing down I added me a wingman and some A-4 opponents. They proved to be just targets. I even got one with the gun-pod. It simply left me with a smile on my face. The map performed very well. The dark dreariness adds to the immersion.
Cheers!
Agree on all points. I’ve been working on a mission as well. Airfield attack at Goose Green. I have a lot of tweaking to do, but the first time through was fun. Not sure why number 4 decided to eject on final. Maybe he didn’t like us parking on the stern.
I’m trying to add some destroyers or frigates to the HMS Invincible CG. Did none of them ship with the SA map? I thought that they had were including a few. At least I can’t add them with the country set to UK in the ME.
Never mind, I had the Historical list of units button turned on at the bottom of the map.
The new assets really make me wish we had proper Brit weapons for the Harrier.
What I am actually looking forward to the most for this terrain is the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.
Just look how incredible low the aircraft come over the tail.
Flying the Community A-4 from that thing is going to be a blast.
Incredible! And I thought the Forrestal was a post stamp. This is going to be so much fun
Some of these approaches look way below glideslope…
That’s what those WWII converted carriers were like…tiny!
I am a bit of a Falklands buff, so went ahead to practice bombing one of the new Leander class frigates with the Skyhawk. I tried Snakeyes (only Argentine Navy Skyhawks had those) as well as 500 lb and 1’000 lb slick bombs used by the FAA. This turned out to be a surprisingly difficult attack profile.
A profile I found that works fairly well for the 1’000 lb bomb is a level release at 450-500 kts, 200-250 ft and 30 mils sight depression. An immediate pull-up is required after bomb release in order to prevent fragging yourself. While this works in principle, it requires a steady hand (difficult when under AAA fire) and still a bit of luck.
Unfortunately there are still a fair number of DCS issues that will affect anti-ship bombing, which is a central element to the Falklands war scenario:
- The 20 mm guns on this frigate are sniper accurate, despite them being manually aimed over an iron sight. In probably 9 out of 10 attack runs I was hit by 20 mm fire. Unfortunately this is an ages old DCS issue.
- The ship’s dual-purpose main guns do not engage air target. In this case we miss the anti-aircraft fire of the 4.5in gun with air-burst shells.
- Damage effects of ships are extremely simplistic.
- No significant damage on ships of close hits in the water.
- No bomb skipping on the water (happened a lot on the Falklands war).
- No bomb penetration or passing through ships (happened a lot on the Falklands war).
- No advanced fusing settings for bombs (which turned out to be a huge issue for the Argentinians).
I feel that without these getting addressed, a realistic Falklands scenario in DCS will be problematic.
Upon doing some further reading, it seems that while retarded Snakeyes were initially only avilable to the Argentine Navy, from 23rd May 1982 on they were apparently also available to FAA Skyhawks and Daggers.
Interestingly, the Argentine 1’000 lb bombs were apparently of British type.
Hell that was cool and scary…
