DCS Super Carrier, or how Will learned to love skittles of all the wrong colours

As was the Nimitz module

That’s a fun game to go back and look at the New Years update and see what actually happened. Last years was fairly accurate, so I’m hoping they pull through on the 2020 plans.

Both Carriers were announced in '16, The original plan was just a external model update, but the module was expanded to cover significantly more.

This.

The thing that’s weird for me is:

Hornet-only owners have to pay for the Kuz to get the Nimitz
FC3-only owners have to pay for the Nimitz to get the Kuz

I’m not suggesting they be separated, but it’s practically the same as the old Cable TV bundle packages where you have to buy 20 channels instead of just the one channel you want.

Nope, that’s not it. Too much ‘glass half empty’ there.

Look at it a different way: people who enjoy carrier ops and buy the Super Carrier module get both the Kuz and the Nimitz. That’s a great deal!

I could understand if the Kuznetsov also included special features like deck crew, elevators, and user control, but so far they say it’s the same as any other AI carrier, just with an updated model. Or have they stated otherwise?

Kuz is functional…

Unrealistic, won’t buy.

/sarcasm.

…mostly.

Buying something you don’t use isn’t a deal, though. This would only be a deal for people who own both FC3 (or just the Flanker-D) and the Hornet.

Dunno.
We should have the metrics of how many players have both a Western Navy plane and FC3.
Maybe it overlaps a lot.

My bet is 50/50. I know there’s lots of folks who only have the Hornet since they’re not terribly interested in anything a) not Western, and b) not full-fidelity. I also know there’s a lot of folks who only have FC3 because of a) price, and b) available time to invest in the sim.

Well, I agree that’s your bet.
Considering what ED said so far (FC3 is the best selling module ever) my take is that’s considerably more.
I just wish we had something more than guesses.

From newsletter (emphasis added)

the DCS: Supercarrier module will also include a greatly updated Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier (without deck animation), the Su-33 Flanker D for DCS World (for those of you who don’t already own it), and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer

I’m confused. I have the Hornet and FC3 and I really want Supercarrier for the deck crew, are you saying certain parts are to be free depending on what module you have?

ED also sells the FC3 aircraft as separate modules.

The way I see it, you’ll get the Su-33 bundled with the super carrier module. This means even users without FC3 or the single Su-33 module can enjoy carrier ops on the Kuz.

Sounds very fair to me.

So, am I right in understanding that in multiplayer I can still use the old carriers and just go my merry way? Or if, let’s say BlueFlag is using these then I cannot do carrier ops anymore?

Huh, guess I shouldn’t have bought the Su-33 and waited until it was bundled with something else.

Well, I certainly couldn’t single out a carrier DLC as being the only DCS product that would fall into that category… I have a dozen modules I’ve barely flown…

I only bought FC3 as at the time those were our only fighters. I owned A-10C, BS2 and got FC3 solely for the F-15C (which they later did the separate offerings). I have only this year dabbled in SU-27.

However counting my FC3 license to tally up for the Kuz, generally speaking would be a mistake. I’ll be happy to have it sure, but it carries no weight for my purchase decision per above.

Edit: I would like to add I don’t regret FC3 over F-15C standalone as the price difference makes FC3 a valuable bundle.

I do not think that it has any of those features. Although the animation system could obviously support it, the logic behind what goes on ‘on deck’ is going to be quite different. I hope that they add it, however. Would be a huge bonus then.

I disagree. The capability is still there. TO be obviously pedantic, do you regularly use all of the airfields on the maps that you own? I just don’t see this as a slight on the Super Carriers module. I wish it was freely available but someone had to put time into making it and they deserve to get paid for that. This is part of the dilemma that ED is running into when updating ‘old’ content - the technology advances and if it is free, well there is no money in that and it does not support a model that keeps them in business.

I don’t think so but we also don’t know all of the details with regard to multiplayer. If you have the F/A-18C, you get a discount on purchasing the Super Carrier module. If you are in multiplayer and you don’t have the module, you can ‘see’ the Super Carrier components - but that is all we know at the moment.

I think that it may depend on if they add both carriers to the missions. (ie: both the regular ‘free’ carrier and the Super Carrier module one).
