DCS: UH-60L Blackhawk (Mod)

A mod team has released a very nice UH-60L today. I was able to get her airborne pretty easily for a short flight around Cyprus. I have to say I’m very impressed. Just in time for the Apache release we have a Blackhawk!

You can check it out here:

I’m having fun with it so far but I’m finding it very difficult to fly. With it’s autopilot system it’s flown like the Ka-50, but even doing that correctly I find the controls sluggish. Can’t get her to turn left at all, but she’ll turn right just fine. A tad confusing.

too many downloads, he needs a better hosting solution

FWIW, I’m not having any control issues at all. I did nuke all of the axis predefined mappings except for TIR and mouse before assigning. Also, noted that in forward flight that pedal authority is reduced compared to the UH-1. Will assume that is correct. I’m really loving the flight model so far.

I was able to get a download in earlier today and wow! Flight model feels about as believable as the Gazelle. Just some weirdness in the hover if you’re too ham-fisted and it is quite easy to reach VNE, perhaps too easy.

But really really incredible for a first releazs of a free mod. The Blackhawk feels heavy, the autopilot is strong, aerial refuelling works!! Be sure to turn on easy comms though (gameplay options), I couldn’t get the comms menu to show with easy comms off.

Great fun! I am not usually this enthusiastic about the free DCS mods, but this one is very close to the A-4E. The second free DCS mod to get the ‘Freaky stamp of approval’.

I would love to try out the multicrew too: judging from the manual, we would need some port forwarding magic but I have a working setup for DCS multiplayer so it should be easy to do the same for a different port number.

I have it installed now. I think the maker changed his download option.
I have succumbed to covid finally so providing I get better and not worse I would be happy to hook up to try the multi crew

Yeah, hope that you fell better soon Cib. Very positive news out of the UK yesterday.

Just took the UH-60 out for a quick flight in VR. Guys, I’m really liking the flight model. Getting very comfortable with it quickly. Calling @smokinhole. Would enjoy hearing your thoughts or from any other RL rotor pilots.

Hope your case is mild, @Cib - I’ll be thinking about you.

Definitely looking forward to trying this one out!

Are you saying that Clutch doesn’t have enough blue steel in his left pedal?

That seems to be what’s messing me up. I mapped the trimmer release to a toggle switch so I can set that and just fly manually without destroying my thumb on the Warthog’s buttons. I’ve always hated the press-and-hold trimmer switches because it either makes me subconciously squeeze the stick and ham-fist everything, or it adds just enough forward pressure on the stick to mess with my precision. I’m still stuck doing airliner turns though. If I add significant pedal for a sharp turn the nose refuses to rate even if I turn the entire autopilot/FPS system off. In a hover pedals work fine.

So what exactly does trim release do versus trim reset? Reset seems to work exactly as I expected, the release I am not sure.

It seems to function like the Ka-50 and M2000C. Basically there’s an autopilot that stays on all the time to keep you level and straight. When you want to maneuver you press and hold the “trimmer release” to maneuver. When you release the switch the autopilot keeps you at whatever orientation you were when you released it.

It doesn’t seem to keep me level very well though. I have a hard time zeroing out my vertical velocity.

Q: How many here have the jet noise (absence of rotor sound) bug? It seems like a lot of people have jet noise and a few people have proper helicopter sounds.

Ah gotcha, don’t know why I didn’t try using it like that.

Same here on the Jet noise. I think they said on the discord channel they’re aware of the issue and will fix it soon.

Yeah, it’s like they got a distant turbine mixed with an unlubricated squash plate. It also has a slightly left bias to my ears.

FWIW, I’m not having any issue with the trim system, though I haven’t flown the aircraft very hard yet. For normal operations, the momentary button for trim release seems to do the job.

Hope that we get AI door gunners one day. This sort of feels like the A-4E-C did a launch, where the aircraft was probably ready for launch, but the dev team hadn’t quite worked out how to implement some features yet. But what we have is really good and I’d be happy flying it into danger with some Apaches along for escort and LZ prep.

That’s what I’m finding as well. The FPS causes more problems than conveniences for me. I mapped the trimmer release to a toggle so I can have it permanently depressed during the flight.
