It’s all about the weight transference and setting up for corners.
You probably know all this but…
Break hard early and before you need to turn into the corner, weight goes forward over the front wheels increasing grip and steering, back goes light, turn and at the same time feather the throttle, as Chipwich says keep the revs up, counter-steer early to catch the oversteer before it progresses.
Enjoy the big grin on your face as you nail that corner.
Edit: As Camembert says, hang in there. You are getting quicker.
Sorry, was busy updating the Arma 3 F/A-18E/F and the little time behind my wheel I spent playing AMS 2
Not sure if I will have time this week to show up in a Rally, fun as they are.
That’s the part that feels really good!
When I nail that hairpin, going completely sideways for several seconds, everything in control. That’s just awesome.
I have gotten better with it, but the problem is that I am only at 90-95%. Every 10th or 20th turn I either oversteer and end up facing the wrong way, or I leave the road to one side or the other.
And when it happens I lose a lot of time, since the way the car handles makes it harder to turn around and get back on track.
And the worst thing is when it happens in a really tight spot. I tend to end up in a position where I am basically stuck and need several attempts to get out of there.
As for the technique: I haven’t completely nailed the braking. In fact my technique right now is to initiate the drift using the handbrake.
But I’ll try out the way you suggested.
As you say it is all about weight transference, and especially in NZ I noticed that there are a few dangerous bumps before turns that mess that part up as soon as you are going with a competitive speed.
I like the challenge though.
Thanks for the encouragement, guys!
I hope we can continue this rally thing in some way. Perhaps with only six stages per rally so the events don’t take as long? I think that could make it easier for more casual players to hop in at times. And maybe driving one class for more than one event so we can get used to the cars a bit better.
One reason why I enjoy the alt rally is that I know my Polo GTI by now, which helps me to concentrate more on the stage and less on the car.
Hopping between Greece in a Group B RWD car and Spain in an R5 is quite taxing on many of us I guess.
Hawkes Bay is turning into a nailbiter for the podium spots. It’s really tight time wise and will be fun to see how it ends up. Again, @keets ran me down like a dog in the last 3 stages. 10 seconds separating us after 12 stages and I guess that the pints are on me again this week. I almost gave up after SS1, which I thought that I had driven fairly cleanly and quickly. But there I was in dead last. Damn! What makes this rally so close? I tried different setups, but in the end, fell back to the default Opel setup.
I ran all 12 stages yesterday, picking the 131 Mirafiouri, purely because a friend had one back in the day which was good fun to drive. I don’t remember it being as quick as this one in game though.
It is looking amazingly close. Its been another fantastic rally (thanks again @mudcat). @chipwich I was looking at your times and thought you were going to do it… I’ll buy the beers this week, you got them last time.
Stage 12 - Is that a piece of dirt on the car that crossed the line first, or a dented wing?
I had a sticky patch on a couple of stages, the worst was when a slight bump on a straight road, caused a high speed tank slapper, full left, full right, full left, full right, then finished stuck sideways against the bank and the barrier.
@Camembert’s taking his time with these last 4 stages, he’s either rationing them or is finding it too nerve wracking. I think he may have enough time in the bag to beat me to 2nd, though lost he 4 seconds on Stage 10… My money is on @Roo for the win.
I’m looking forward to seeing the result in the morning.
Grrrrr…
I had one almost decent stage (concentration failed after around eight minutes, made quite a few errors from there on). Even took a video of the replay.
(will be HD in a few minutes)
Then the game crashed on me and I got a DNF on that stage.
It made me so angry that I then didn’t listen to Tanja properly and rolled the car in the next stage. From there on I just drove to finish. That’s a disappointing end. But then I wasn’t going to beat any of you so it probably doesn’t matter. Still sad.
I was going to finish the rally today but after 2 nerve wracking stages today I got rescued by a Madras curry and 2 bottles of wine and didn’t dare go near my racing rig afterwards. I’m really struggling with the fast long sections and for some reason am comfortable on the twisty winding bits so hopefully the last two stages are like that. Finish it off tomorrow.
Well, even if I win the event, if @Camembert keeps second he’ll win the championship by one point. And you’ve got a 27 second advantage with two short stages to go, so it’s definitely a possibility!
And @chipwich, I needed you to finish second! Gah, can’t get good help these days.
Well I finished and clung onto second place. 27 seconds spare with two slippery stages to come meant that I talked myself into panic mode. Coasted round the first one with the risk of a nose bleed if my hand even got near fourth gear. Used up far too much time and thought I’d better wake up for the last one.
Set off like a lunatic and miraculously negotiated the first three bends like a whirling dervish until I calmed down then drove like a granny going out shopping and used up lots of my spare time. So it was foot pressed to the floor eyeballs out thinking I’d blown it. Scattered the officials in all directions as I crossed the line at Mach 2.0.
I think I may have won the event but to be honest I feel like a fraud. Just looking at everyones times I think I only did it by being boring and consistent and there are several of you that have a lot more skill and speed than I do. Thanks to you all for taking part and of course to Mudcat for setting this up.
For someone who gets nervous just thinking about a cold and dark start in my Viggen this has been terrifying but great fun
But giving a glance I noticed one glaring issue with that, the first race Keets has 0 points but came in 5th? I believe this is the race that Keets accidentally left the league, I re-added him to the league, the times are still there, but the points however are not.
How many points is 5th place when there are 8 racers like there was in Finland you ask…
3
So, adding in those 3 points that would make the final tally at the top 3
I’m glad everyone enjoyed for the most part. The alt rally still has a day to go, but after that???
If folks are interested in a 1 rally a week (which is @ 1- 1 1/2 hours of your time) just give me a quick yay or what not, It of course would still be open to everyone, I just need to probably cast a slightly wider net after a slight break of course
