DiRT Rally 2.0 League - Discussion

A funny handicap would be to make the faster drivers drive a car of a slower class.

But then… if @Roo beats me driving a Citroen DS while I am in a Group B car, I might just jump off a bridge in Argentina.

Hmmmm… I have to check a few times of mine. I wonder if there are a any surprises.

Just finished Argentina. I started gingerly not enjoying the walls, but the more the rally went on, the more comfortable in the car and being able to predict the slide.

Stage 12 - I really enjoyed, hitting a couple of the hairpins and following turns nicely.

That said, let’s see how those times hold up as @TeTeT and whoever Playersomethingnumber is have crashed out.

Finally got my stand in the other day, ironically it will probably be put… under my desk, should be interesting when I do get time to drive.

Will most likely do my run tomorrow.

So I know you were joking, but… (you can already see where this is going, can’t you?).

I decided to take the Fulvia (no, not the DS; the Fulvia seems to be the best H1 car) and take it to the stage where I thought it had the best chance against a Group B car. I picked Old Butterstone Muir, as it has those tight 1/2 corners early on where the Group Bs are really easy to catch off boost, and it’s predominately downhill, so the H1s can accelerate a tiny bit better. Here are our Group B times:

After dozens of attempts, memorizing most of the stage (the first few corners are burned in my memory now), I got down to, drum roll please:

3:28.363

So Aginor, I did NOT end up beating your time. The world record time is 3:24.105, so it is theoretically faster than any of us.

Remember though, that is using soft tires, and practicing for hours on end, compared to our runs, which were mainly about getting to the end of the stage in one piece without any restarts, on medium tires (I assume), on one of the most awkward stages for Group Bs. So please don’t feel too bad!

You are awesome, man!

I do my best.

Put in half of Argentina yesterday evening. Had two crashes (software type) after Stages 2 and 6, thankfully the times had already uploaded to Racenet.

I really don’t like Argentina in the Group Bs though. You’re either stuck in an endless series of “1 right, hairpin left, 2 left, 1 right, hairpin right” where it’s really difficult to maintain any boost, and any time you get a tiny straight and a chance to open her up, it is so, so bumpy. There is one stage which is relatively smooth and with some nice open corners, but everything else is a bit frustrating.

I noticed that there is one of the twisty stages where @keets definitely has my measure. I think I keep catching the Pug off boost, but the Lancia has no problems with the supercharger at low revs. I was lucky in that you must have had some incidents in the first few stages where I got a good buffer, but some of that has slipped away. I think the Lancia is probably the best pick for this rally, as you don’t have those moments where you’re waiting ages for the turbo to spool up out of the hairpins.

This is shaping up to be a good battle. :slightly_smiling_face:

I got caught a couple of times, once where I had to do a quick reverse and then floor it.

Another where I slipped over the bank on a hairpin. The slip on the hairpin was because I wasn’t quick enough on the throttle being too gentle.

I think in the bonus stage you may smash that time, I pinged a rock on the right just after the last split and burst a tyre. I drove the remainder super cautious and managed to keep the tyre on the rim so it wasn’t too bad.

Good luck with the next few. It’s fun watching the gain/loss going up and down.

I’m also interested in your stage 12 time because I don’t recall running a stage that felt as good in the Lancia.

Fell into a chasm in stage 9. :frowning:
But the rally was going badly for me anyway. In one of the early stages the game glitched out after me sliding onto a rock, and refused to set me back onto the road despite me being in a situation where I could not get out myself. Took me half a minute or so to shake the car around and crash into the rocks front and back several times until the game finally let me reset, and I got another 30 seconds. And had to replace a tyre for another minute.

I have a small request and really only need one volunteer, but would anyone be willing to assist if needed with the league. Really would only be just member approvals if someone is waiting and I’m not around, or possibly setting up an event.

I probably should have had an additional person just in case from the start. Wife’s job has mentioned a possibility of us maybe moving, which with all the logistics could mean I might not be able to set some stuff up in the future.

Chances are small that I wouldn’t still be able to do stuff, but I like to be over prepared just in case rather than under prepared :stuck_out_tongue:

So just need someone willing to handle stuff for a short spell if needed. Thanks

Sure. Happy to help.

thanks!

I must say I’m glad Argentina is over. I felt like a Bond martini (shaken, not stirred) made by an overenthusiastic bartender. I’m lucky in that I seem to have a cast iron gut when it comes to VR, but even for me, going over those big bumps after a big meal was starting to give me the slightest hint of nausea. Back when we were running the R5 rally, I wondered if we’d missed something fun as we didn’t run this location; that feeling has passed!

So roll on…(checks calendar)…Australia? Hmm, more tight sections draped across the side of a mountain, with a few nasty bumpy sections of its own. * Sigh *

Great times @Roo.

How did you find the last few stages? You tore my time to bits on the last stage. So much for me thinking I’d set a good time.

Due to time constraints, I had to drive straight through Argentina with little to no practice. All of the tight hairpins just slaughter the Audi due to turbo lag. I lowered gear ratios attempting to mitigate the issue and drive through them pumping the accelerator, but as soon as you tap the brakes, the engine RPM dies. It was horrible. Gave it my best effort.

Is that what was going on? I thought maybe my pedals were messed up. I feel slightly better now, not much better, just slightly.

So…f’n… angry right now. Skidded at the wrong spot. Brakes held, then just slowly slid into the ravine.

Did manage a sole green sector. Otherwise every other sector I was consistently 7 seconds behind. The only variation being miscues on my part.

Will post a video or two tonight after a few cold ones.

Oof, I did exactly the same in Greece with the RWD Group Bs. Believe me, I know the frustration. If it’s any consolation, it looks like that stage took out a total of three people so far. Hang in there mate! :slightly_smiling_face:

That right there was the biggest frustration for this course. Sometimes, typically going downhill I think, I could keep the turbo spooled up, but other times I’d plant the throttle and wait an agonizing 2-3 seconds for anything to happen. The Lancia and the MG sure had it a lot easier.

Thanks. Stage 11 I went in a little overenthusiastic and backed the rear down a little hill just after the start. Managed to climb back up with minimal time loss, and reigned in my enthusiasm after that. I think I was still ~6 seconds down at the halfway point, but you must have started hitting trouble after that as I was about 4 seconds up at the last split, with your unfortunate puncture lending me the majority of the final margin.

Stage 12 went really well. Everything flowed beautifully, and the downhill nature of it helped with the turbo lag too. Minimal mistakes and it just all came together. You did gain a few seconds back on me in the final two sectors; going so slow in the canyons for so long, I was scared of the faster stuff and was perhaps a little overcautious. I was so close to the end I just wanted to make sure I finished and didn’t launch it off a cliff at 150 mph while 500 feet from the finish line.

If it’s where I think it is, I went through the yellow tape over the ravine as well, but on stage 12.

Popped 2 tires early, halfway through decided to just slam on some softs and remove the spare. Still couldn’t catch up much, last stage I just went for broke. Was pretty much locked into 4th going into the last stage. Left it all out, including my Ford. Fun rally, the bumps bothered me more than the hairpins, but still a good challenge.

Exactly my spot. The thing that angers me most is that I developed a mantra during my training runs: “avoid yellow tape” because it happened to me there as well.

For some reason I just didn’t notice it. When I dis I slammed the breaks and tried to steer the car away from it but it didn’t work. I was a tad too fast.
