I did not wear a watch for years. For 15 years I was out of the habit and always used by phone. Last year my brother gave me his hand-me-down Apple Watch (Series 2 or 3) and I started wearing it. This year while chatting with my doctor, she mentioned that the new Apple Watch has some better heart monitoring functions and the geek in me couldn’t pass that up - also, heart palpitations and being able to record an episode is very, very useful. And now I ma back to feeling naked without one.
I’m not gonna post a picture here because it’s not a sexy watch like @fearlessfrog 's binary one but I did get the smaller model because I do hate a large device on my wrist.
The wife got me this a couple of years ago… She knows me well… Titanium casing and the citizen eco drive, so I wouldn’t forget to wind it… and it’s set for standard British rail time (which is five minutes fast, so we can tell people they are on time for our late train😁)
Here’s my smartish watch. It’s got a e-ink watchface to display when there’s an appointment in my calendar. Not exactly pretty but quite useful, but only if there not too many appointments a day. Otherwise it just becomes all dark background.
It can vibrate to alert me of upcoming meetings, too. I am still sometimes too concentrated to notice, though.
You probably know this but automatic watches get easily thrown off by electro-magnetic sources. Some watches go to extremes to counter this: ($8300 must buy you something, right?)
Maybe. It usually requires a long exposure in more intense settings, like Dr. Frankenstein’s lab. In fact I think Rolex had the good doctor in mind when they invented the Milgauss.
I also was looking for something "pilot-y’ without being too flashy, I have two. This one I got maybe 10 years ago, still going (but unfortunately started running a bit slow). It’s a replica (or maybe a ‘styled after’) Russian pilot’s watch from the 30’s.
Haven’t worn it for ages because the old leather watch band kept popping off (not sure why, certainly isn’t due to any Popeye-like forearm strength) . 3 separate times by a miracle I didn’t loose it, it either ended up in my sleeve, or one time it dropped and landed right on my foot so I stopped tempting fate and bought one of those “NATO” style bands. Seems to be working out great so I’ve been wearing it again.
I really liked the way this one looked, but it died on me after only a year.
Brought it to a local repair shop but they were at a loss, will try again some other time. I bet it was under warranty but I am terrible about remembering that so I’m sure it’s long over.
Mine that I wear when I’m in the office. Not worn now for over a year. It was my 30th birthday present from my wife.
At the time I wasn’t wearing a watch and mobile phones only made phone calls. I was looking at something like a G-shock and would never have looked at something like this.
Fortunately my wife knows me better than I do and a soon as I put it on, it looked right and I loved it.
I got a cheap Fossil watch for Christmas back in middle school. I wore it everyday. When it broke I bought one just like it. When that broke I got another just like it. I still have 4 of them in my “junk” drawer. Probably wore those for 15 years.
Then I got into pocket watches. Started with a Cheap one that looked almost like the cheap Fossil watch I had been wearing. Ended up with a $400 one from my wife. I still have it, but as a lot of folks mentioned. I started carrying my cell phone, and the pocket watch just sort of became a display piece on my dresser.
This Christmas my wife bought me a Galaxy watch to go with my Galaxy phone. I wear it, but since I do nothing and have no friends it is a bit overkill.
I saved up for this watch for two months when I was based on Guam. I bought it at the Kansai airport in 2004 for $400. That’s a bag of money for a Citizen. But the watch has been incredible. There was a period where I biked, dived, rock climbed, mountain climbed and ran drunk through the jungle with buddies. This watch did all that and has no scratch anywhere. The case is solid titanium. The only cuts into it are for the screw-down crown and the sapphire. I lost it for a year and tried to find a replacement in both the US and Japan. Citizen still makes watches that look like it but none come close to it in quality.
Necro time! I wear two watches … my FitBit Inspire and a regular timepiece. I shocked my old G-SHOCK into submission so I bought this today … built military tough but not so expensive that I have to worry about damaging it. The Garmin Instinct Tactical! …
It’s got a NOD mode so you can read it with your night optics device , a jump mode for doing HALO jumps and whatnot and it’s even got a kill switch so you can delete all your location data real quick in case you get caught by the enemy! Nothing I’d ever use but the cool factor is definitely there! …
1 - Can answer my iPhone with the watch…because I am forever setting the phone down and forgetting where. Being able to answer the wife’s call before the second ring enables marital bliss.
2 - Timer…because I can’t figure out the oven timer when baking a frozen pizza.
3 - “Siri, Find my phone.” - because, see number 1
4 - Can start / stop the iPhone Horse Riding Tracker app - because, have you ever tried to get out, use, puts back an iPhone with one hand while siting on the back of a jittery horse? (my other hand desperately holding the reins)
5 - Can Play / Pause / Adjust volume of iTunes or Audible on AirPods - because I don’t keep my phone on me while at Fysio Terapy. (the gym).
6 - Acts as a nightstand clock while charging at night - because I don’t have a nightstand clock
7 - Has a face that shows sunrise / sunset times - because I live 275 km above the arctic circle and they change a lot from day-to-day this time of year.
8 - Will notice if you have walked for a bit then ask if you want to record it as a work out - because, “hell yes I do!” (Every little bit counts)
9 - Automatically takes my MacBook Pro out of screensaver/lock when I move my hands near the keyboard - because that saves about 2.1 seconds…it adds up after a while and life is too short.
10 - Can read texts on watch - because, see number 1.
11 - Can track your heart rate - because if I am ever murdered, CSI will be able to tell the exact second I died.
I feel naked without a watch. I have 5 now. 2 are cheap Timex i find simpl and expendable. Ive have them Yeeears and replace the bands regularly. This is my daily driver to the office
