ELINT POD in the DCS Viggen

Yeah know, I’ve never had a compressor stall. Ripped the wings off a few times, but the fire was still there!

I’ve been suffering them a lot. You’d think being 1/4th Swedish would make me good at it, but I apparently don’t finesse the stick well enough.

Does the Viggen’s ELINT system also pick up/record air radars?

So I had an idea for a logo tonight while driving, and I made one real quick… thoughts?

The planet in the background feels a bit off compared to the rest of the styling which is just outlines. Perhaps consider that for the planet too only then in differently coloured lines?

YGTBKM! In the Viggen? Never? You are a better pilot than I.

I like it although agree with @TheAlmightySnark that the planet might be a little more stylized.

Also think the “Cave Tonitrum” “Beware the Thunderbolt” might be somehow incorporated into the patch - a double appropiate motto since the Viggen is the Thunderbolt and ELIT recce deals with electric stuff flying through the air.

So…who owns the lint.pdf database file and how do we update it.

From last night’s recce mission:

Since there are no Iran naval units except “armed speedboat”, I though it would be nice if in my DCS world they had purchased a couple of new Chiese frigates.

Much to my surprise (not really because I obviously designed the mission) one came out to patrol around Siri and Abu Musa islands. I got ELINT on him (a nice tight fix) and took some “photos”. Identified as a probable Jiangkai or Jiangkai II FFG (Type 54 or 54A).

No entry in the ELINT database pdf…so, as in the real world, my virtual squadron intelligence officer is sending in this report to update it.

In the real world we nave a HUGE ELINT data base and something like this would be added to it.

Not sure on latin for a Swedish AC. How common is that in non-english speaking world?

Nah, works out just fine – the Swedish gave up Odin for the Pope in the ~11th century, so Latin is cool.

They did kick the pope to the curb when Luther nailed his manifesto to the door, didn’t they?

Here’s part of an answer I gave @Andrew116 in a message, and a little added info. Might as well include the rest of you…

SwAF squadron patches often had very uncerimonius mottos. One fighter squadron even had ”Food gives strength” !

The recce squads in Luleå had ”Akktu Stakki” which is sami for lone wolf.

The Attack squadron where I crewchiefed used to have the comic character Asterix on their patch.

Latin mottos are frequently used, and often tweaked to suit their purpose, as the ancient greeks never dealt with aircraft

Regarding this patch I did the following reasoning:

In the swedish armed forces the saying goes: ”Utan Spaning Ingen aning” which sounds good in swedish, but the english translation would be ”No recce, no clue”

One word that comes to mind is ”Strålande”.
This means radiating, as in the heat was radiating.
The derived meaning, of course, being radiation from emitters.
Strålande is also used in a positive meaning, like great, or fantastic.
”Strålande Nyheter” means great news.
I guess this could be a motto for a patch, as intel is news…? ”Radiating News” with the double meaning ”Great news”.

I like strålande nyheter, thats clever and funny!

Nyheter / News also has a nice double hint towards canard (duck), which is a French term for incorrect news…and as noted duck is already featured

That was news to me!

It’s the same in German language

I like it…the other meaning, in other languages, meaning Bad News is perfect - Radiating Great News for us means bad news for the bad guys.

FYI, The unoficial motto of US Naval Intelligence (as seen on the unofficial but widely used patch of US Naval Intelligence on the shoulder of my flight jacket) is “In God We Trust All Others We Monitor”

The first part comes from US currency–coins which bear “In God We Trust”

The unofficial motto for F-14 TARPS comes from the slang “Kicking @$$ and Taking Names” The TARPS motto, “Clicking @$$ and Taking Frames”.

Both are a bit “tongue in cheek” (no direct translation to Norsk or Svesk: place closest colloquium here____).

if we want to go in that direction to get a more jaunty moto.

However I like ”Strålande Nyheter”!

Nearest we got is this: http://www.viggentools.se/assets/elint/elint.pdf or http://www.viggentools.se/

The page Articles - Mudspike Forums just uses a couple of them for examples, with everything else passed through as a ?. Eventually we could update that bit of code to use all the bits from that PDF.

It looks great!
