EDIT: I’ve set up buy orders for everything we need for the two ground stations (I think) so feel free to source and sell to the carrier. She is stationed above the ELW at Lave.
Shopping list complete, Trit topped off.
Kind of messed up that some stuff is illegal. I got 146K in fines for some of the required goods.
All good. Lave was the perfect spot. Most stuff was within 1 jump.
Wow, that was quick! Amazing work.
I was planning on helping out but today has been a bloody awful day (bereavement) and I haven’t been able to get on. I will jump Feo Lo back to Gamma Muscae tonight. Probably 11 or 12 pm UTC.
I did manage to scratch together a rough spreadsheet to help with system planning. If I get the chance tomorrow I might see about putting it on Google Drive or something.
I’m out until maybe tomorrow night, because children and family stuff. But I’ll be ready to hop back in soon.
Planetary Base is done.
Not sure what we should target next but I am positive we don’t have enough mats to do all that we have in construction.
The planetary base is currently a settlement, I’m assuming it will turn into a base after the next tick. Once its a base we should have a large landing pad, then I can start migrating my ships into the system…
There is a second ground installation one moon over that we should have the mats for. I’ll have a look this evening and place some more stuff. Once both surface sites are done we should be able to stattbon a starport.
Firstly, I apologise for being pretty much AWOL this weekend. There was a relatively unexpected death in the family, and I’ve been dealing with the fallout from that. I should be able to get on for an hour or two tomorrow though to plan out the next step of colonising Gamma Muscae.
I’ve posted a link to CMDR Mechan’s video below which throws some light on the hidden mechanics behind system colonisation. TLDR: It seems we need to decide whether we are going to go for a tier 3 (very large) space station or not. It will need to be the first or second station we build to avoid the prohibitively steep cost increase. A T3 station will require multiple carrier loads of commodities on its own, not to mention the prerequisite ground stations. It will be a lot of work but would boost the economy immensely. Thoughts?
I’m pretty confident to speak for everyone here when I say that you don’t have to worry about anything. Elite is a game and it can wait.
Real life always comes first.
OK. On today’s edition of “Stupid is as Stupid does” I learned a few things:
-
If you get out of your ship to go look around the interesting surface building site your ship will automatically launch without you
-
Despite being on a moon 8000Ls away from the primary star, the interesting surface building site is HOT! Hot enough to drain your suit battery at a significant rate as it tries to keep you from turning into a well done steak
-
The interesting surface building site contains no charging points or cool areas to hide in
-
You cannot call your ship back from within the interesting surface building site
-
If run out of the interesting surface building site and recall your ship there is a non-zero chance of it landing next to the interesting surface building site close enough to block one of the landing pads
-
If you then get in your ship to narrowly avoid death by broiling you instantly receive a 600cr fine for blocking a landing pad at the interesting surface building site
-
Once you take off you cannot land back at the interesting surface building site to pay your fine because you have a fine to pay and therefore access is denied
-
My fleet carrier does not have the Redemption service installed that would allow me to pay the fine from there
-
You can nip over to Roanoke Outpost to pay the fine there, but if you do you shouldn’t do it in your racing eagle as it will get impounded and you will be transported to the nearest detention facility
-
The nearest detention facility is around 190LYs from Gamma Muscae
-
My racing eagle has a max jump range of 16 LYs
-
Very few sights are as welcome as this after 19 jumps in an unshielded lightweight paper thin racing ship:
Quick Update:
I have repositioned Fei Lo above the surface construction site on the next moon over - spectacular arrival:
All the goods needed should be on board. I managed to do a few trips - pro tip: come in at quite a steep angle so as not to get pulled out of glide early by the walls of the crater. It is HUGE! If you do get pulled out it’s a long slow crawl to the construction site. Also, an SCO drive would be very helpful getting out of the gravity well (I don’t have one )
I’ve left it at about 50% done as I have to get back to work, but it’ll only take about 4 or 5 cutter / T9 loads to finish. Once it’s done we will have enough T2 points to place either a Coriolis station or Asteroid station.
Asteroid! Asteroid!
I say Orbis Station or Asteroid. I’m not a fan of Coriolis stations, Too much effort to find the mail slot.
Is it possible to put one close to the main star or will that mess up the economy?
Firstly:
I completed the ground installations. I would recommend visiting Lane Keep at least once as the location is monumental. I will jump Fei Lo back into the bubble in a minute and put buy orders on for the next round of construction (2 orbital installations) - see below.
This was wrong. We got a T3 point from one of them instead of a T2 point, so we will need to complete two more orbital installations before we can build a starport. However, it’s worth thinking about what we want to aim for:
I like the idea of an asteroid base. There are three reasonable options for placement:
The logical place to put it would be in the rings around the gas giant 5 A (middle arrow). This has a pair of rocky rings and is about 1100Ls from the main star. It also has another slot for an orbital installation which may be important for the economy of the station given the way things function at the moment. Not sure about the long term implications.
We could put it around star 3 (left arrow) which is a little closer to the main star (about 600Ls) and has icy rings, but we may end up with a station that only produces biowaste. FDEV have said they are going to tinker with the economy mechanics, so maybe we should revisit this later on?
The alternative option is to put it around body 10 (right arrow) which I think has a single rocky ring. This would likely produce the best economy in the long run as we build up installations and settlements on the moons around it, but it’s a longer ride from the main star (about 2600Ls).
For reference, Roanoke Outpost is about 3600Ls from the main star.
If we decide to build an Orbis we will need 6 T3 points, requiring quite a bit more work to get there. I would suggest saving a slot around a non-ringed body for that but I’m open to suggestions.
So, I think the most obvious plan is as follows:
- Finish two of the currently in progress orbital installations to give enough T2 points for an asteroid base (one carrier load will do it)
- Build an asteroid base at one of the above locations - let me know your preference for location (about two carrier loads)
- Build 3 orbital installations and 3 large surface settlements to get enough T3 points for an Orbis (probably about 4 carrier loads)
- Build an Orbis wherever (about 4 carrier loads)
After that, we can do whatever. Also, if there’s something else you would like to see let me know.
Fei Lo has arrived at Lave. I’ve put buy orders on for all the materials needed to complete all three existing orbital installations.
So here is what the system looks like on paper at the moment:
And will look like this is if we follow the plan above:
So only 306 THOUSAND tonnes of cargo to go
One question. It came to my attention that to rename the structures you need to pay money, real lfe cash.
Even if it’s not a big sum I still offer to chip in and give you something back.
Yes, it costs 5000 Arx, or roughly £3, to rename a station. I have about 12000 Arx saved up I think, so I’m ok for the moment. If you want to contribute that’s much appreciated, but don’t feel pressured.
Thinking about it, I paid £15 for the base game + Horizons in 2018, £7 for Odyssey (on sale), and recently I bought £12 worth of Arx to customise Fei Lo. I may have bought a couple of ship skins too before Arx were a thing. I consider that very good value for the 1000’s of hours of entertainment provided.
OK dropped some tons of materials with my T-9 Isengard- basically covered all the Power Generators needs plus some small extras.
Will try to haul some tomorrow. I can carry 790 tons per trip so I could be useful.
I have some stuff in my hold still, if I get time to play any time this week.
Real world needs to quit being top headlines in an the things I do professionally.
