I am currently having a hard time mapping controls. The thing in the launcher seemed to take all the button assignments, but in game, they are no longer working
It’s hella fast and looks like… last century tbh. Still. I can’t wait to get my controls sorted and get into that campaign again.
I remember the soundscape being really good, but I found it rather underwhelming. May be I need to tweak that some as well.
I’m on the road for another week; can’t wait to try this. My preference for VR is a priority (waited for it since I tried a crude example circa 1998, at an expo in KSAN).
4.32 was the last version I used years ago. If the single player experience is as good as it sounds (based on the occasional bits I’ve seen/heard every so often) then perhaps there’s a slim chance it will nudge ED in a direction that improves AI and game play.
Perhaps. I think simshaker supports BMS too, which is an added bonus. Have to double check this. AND if there’s a voice recognition option then, welll, bub-bye DCS (maybe) Eye Candy is always nice but that alone does not hold my interest long enough.
The BMS DC was good (4.32) but still had problems. Bet it’s better now.
And falcon 4,0 was a mess. A mess that showed what a good air combat sim could be, when it wasn’t crashing to desktop.
I’ve always thought the distant future for a hardcore combat flight sim would have to come from a free/open source; those that prefer such things are too small In number to make a profit.
Remains to be seen how much I’ll miss customizing-coercing-the sim to do things I feel should already be there, via lua scripting; there is a place for this kind of customization - and I may find that, especially for air to ground combat, custom, limited, dynamic (or close to it) campaigns is my future.
Oh, and happy new year to you all

Actually I am having problems with the controls too. It remembers the callbacks but not any axes. I have to spend a couple of minutes redoing it each time I boot the game. We’ll figure it out!
For whom who are facing problem with mapping control (axis) in Falcon BMS you need to look to folder "C:\Falcon BMS 4.36\Hotas where are different HOTAS setup available.
Then follow for example instruction in file :“C:\Falcon BMS 4.36\Hotas\TM Warthog\Quick Setup Guide.txt”
You don’t need to use alternate launcher for Falcon BMS. Is not necessary to use it. We used it in past but after conficts and problems with different versions of BMS we are using native files only.
Normally I would agree with you, never used AL before too in 6 years of falcon… But the only way I fixed all issues was to use it. Dunc’s profile is pretty inop now which is a pity for Cougar users. Nevertheless, great little tool, so all set.
So: don’t do what Rapier posted above that was 4.36. Instead use AL. You might want to do a quick start exit of the game, I had to put in all buttons and axes twice as they magically disappeared.
About smart-scaling, it’s great. With a CV1 and I can spot visually from 8 miles. Performance is CPU bound, so for typical scenarios I get 60-90 fps on a 3060ti and a 7700K. Campaigns: not so much, some tearing on the ramp, it gets better in the air but more optimization is needed. Nevertheless, I expect after those first 2 campaign sorties of massive chaos the situation should improve drastically.
oh yeah: alt+c, p disables that 90s looking pilot body in pit
@Easy glad to hear that everything works with AL for your setup. I will stay as usually without AL.
Smart Scaling feature is something what I never used in BMS. Some of our squadron members prefer it and use it, especially dogfighters, but I don’t like when MBTs on the terrain looks from 20000 ft too big.
Not sure if you know, but you can use TGP in AG as well as in AA mode to get more details about AG or AA target.
Downloading now…
I had forgotten that you needed F4 installed for the BMS updater to work. Sigh! Do I really have to find my old DVD drive and the F4 disc? No, wait a minute! I’ve been here before, haven’t I? I bought it online, somewhere… Searched my emails, and sure enough! I bought it from GOG.com back in 2015. Knowing me, I probably don’t have a backup of it. Is it still available at GOG? Recover the password and voilà!
Oh, I have to install and run it once…
Suddenly the F4 menu music came pouring out of my speakers…!
Well, I finally got to play with it last night for about 3 hours. First thing I have to say is that the VR/2D mirror is absolutely wonderful. It’s the way they all should be. I can do all the setup, controls, mission planning, etc and then just put the headset on.
Controls setup with the new launcher is perfect too, WAY easier than DCS or IL2. I wish they were all this way. It’s searchable, well indexed, and best of all, it polls all devices at the same time instead of having to double click the specific device. When you have 13 input devices, this saves significant time and effort!
VR is smooth smooth smooth. Very cool! Cockpit looks fine, it’s about on par with the DCS FC3 F-15C. The HMD on one eye is okay, although both would be better. Right now the only major issue I see is HUD is arbitrarily focused at a certain point, which makes it render kinda funny and gives you a slight cross eye feeling. I have no doubt they can fix this, but thinking about it gives you a deeper appreciation of how much effort goes into VR beyond 2D rendering.
I practiced some AAR with the BMS Hornet to try that sweet flexible hose. Man, that is fun. Having the basket be something that’s more alive is awesome. Also more difficult, but part of that was me battling the BMS Hornet Flight Model, not sure what was going on there.
This was indeed a pleasant surprise.
The GUI will take some time to get used to, but it seems to be very functional, I just need to find my way around in it.
Graphics are…well, old-ish, but it also looks rather business like. It reminds me a lot of what I see twice a year in our Level D sim at work. The cockpit is rather plain looking.
But OMG it looks sharp in VR!
Sharp and fast! Everything is readable and incredibly smooth. Clouds are good. Not as good as the recent volumetric clouds we’ve got in newer sims, but better than most sims, just a few years ago, if you know what I mean. Not bad by any means, but I’ve been spoiled by DCS, MSFS and IL-2.
Shadows are very nice and immersive! On par or better than anything else out there.
I had some trouble with the throttle axis, before I realized how to set the idle and AB detents correctly. I had them reversed, and that didn’t work very well!
I burst out laughing after my first landing.
“Goblin 2-1, Kunsan Tower, next time get clearance before landing.” Heeeey, babe! Where’ve you been, all these years?”
I feel like I just ran into my old highschool sweetheart, 20 years later. Turns out she became a swimsuit model, developed her own brand and got really rich. And I’m love struck, prepared to leave my wife and family to live with her…
Now I feel the urge to build that force transducer based F-16 stick and put together the Cougar TQS that I have stashed away, for just such an event like this.
Happy New Year everybody!
I feel I will spend a considerable amount of my sim time in an F-16, in 2023.
