Falcon BMS Discussion

I still have Falcon 3.0 Floppies and the Bootdisk to make it run

I also still have Falcon AT 5.25 Floppy, doubt it reads still though.

Falcon 4.38 looks even better and better. It’s amazing the work those guys are doing with such an old engine. I hope their collaboration with Microprose is successful and that I’m around to enjoy that sim when it is released.

As an aside, I’m not able to get a good VR experience with 4.37. My clouds are black and they seem to generate as flat 2D entities. Anyway, I’m hoping 38 rectifies my VR issues.

The 4.37 clouds are not volumetric. I’ve not heard if 4.38 will be but, if yes, that would surprise me. But I’ve not had problems with VR. The opposite in fact. The implementation has been perfect except for one thing: cockpit size. The scale needs to be set for each plane type in Steam. If that’s a problem, I can explain the simple process to correct it.

The modern remake of the Falcon music is pretty neat…

Thanks. I immediately noticed the small cockpit scale but the clouds have been hard to ignore. So, I’m “no go” for now.

I think the new DCS clouds, esp. with the shadows cast upon the ground, was the most significant ‘immersive’ feature for VR. First time I really felt like I was at 30K feet above the ground (when there were clouds around to dive through of course).

Falcon 4.0s Source code isnt far behind, lol

Up high, BMS offers much to love—even before VR. My top sims: DCS, X-Plane, IL2 and MSFS are all gorgeous in different ways but three things they all get wrong on occasion are color, saturation and brightness when flying high. BMS has a brilliance at altitude that often nails the experience. The sun and contrast are intense. The blue is deep at high angles and washed out near the horizon. The transitions at dusk and dawn are darn near perfect.

But none of that is meant to dismiss the criticism of the clouds in BMS. DCS and IL2 really raised the standard. BMS on the other hand has a more utilitarian look—a bit like the professional full-motion sims many of us are accustomed to.

3D clouds mean a big FPS hit - so that has been the usual reason given.

With DX11 and with a new terrain engine due that may change - will see.

DX11 is not the savior they are looking for, just ask ED…

btw if you go 50 years back the other way you get to this Curtiss A-3 Falcon

Yeah I’m not sure why they didn’t skip to DX12 or preferrably Vulkan.

ED or BMS?

DX12/Vulkan didnt exist when DCS moved to DX11,

AFAIK, DX8 to DX9 to DX11 is relatively easy as the back end has barely changed and is still single threaded,

DX12 and Vulkan conversion is much more complex.

BMS.

Sure, but it’s a much better use of their time than moving to an API that is obsolete at the time of release.

Here’s the rub,
Moving to DX12 or Vulkan requires a lot of reworking to make the render thread multi-threaded,

Likely something they can’t or don’t wanna do, considering the source code is now 26 years old, it may not support DX12 or Vulkan APIs.

In video description it’s noted that this is BMS 4.38.07?
The water looks new and the terrain doesn’t seem to be tile-based. The clouds still looks like from the current version though.

I think that video was posted elsewhere as well. And yep, the new terrain engine is coming in two weeks!
