LOL, this is how my brain remembers playing Falcon 4.0 when it came out!

Amazing shots. Future looks pretty good…

BMS is looking like a snack in the eye candy department. My main hope is that the update helps me sort out my black clouds in VR issue. Either way, I still intend to get it.

The work that the team is doing is impressive and it would be soooo cool if they can earn a contract with Microprose and their new Falcon development. Potential game changer and more fun for simmers.

Yeah. A new graphics and flight engine over the old campaign logic would be something pretty special in the modern market!

The recent DCS/Quest incompatibility has brought me home to BMS for a spell. The biggest surprise for me has been the F-15. It is far from end-state but easily surpasses the F-18 as the most refined plane in the sim that isn’t a Viper.

I personally think the -15C in BMS is better than the -15C in DCS. That SA page makes all the difference…

New interview with the original creator of the Falcon 4.0 Dynamic Campaign Kevin Klemmick who has been at NVIDIA for sometime. Fair bit of detail (39m mark has something interesting)

Straight up admitted to leaking the source code, lol.

it doesn’t matter though, as all Falcon IP was released by escrow agencies. so “Leaked” is a broad term.

God bless him, it was too good to die.

Was interesting. The conversation pretty much confirmed what I already knew about complex flight sims:

  1. They don’t appeal to the masses
  2. They take a LOT more time to produce (relatively more complex)
  3. Because of 1 and 2 there’s not nearly as much profit
  4. He concludes (correctly IMHO) that people find un-realistic things fun and some (but not many) find realism fun. The latter won’t sell as much.

Interesting bit: the speaker recently tried Falcon [after 25 years and being a dev on the project] and found it was too complex - he just wanted to ‘shoot things’.

I have found that the older I get the more I fall into that category….not necessarily the shooting part, but generally speaking the minutia of learning and operating complex systems seems far too much like work. That probably explains why I have been having a blast with VTOL VR and have hardly touched DCS in months.

I’m hip. As I get older TIME is everything.

Realism is fun to me, or more fun (given obvious limitations, time being a big one) - yet I don’t want to join someone else’s idea of the military either.

Hard to explain.

Somewhere around here I posted about a mission flown while testing my system; in the end what took place would be considered pretty mundane stuff to a real pilot I’m sure, but getting it as close to right (I call it ‘hitting the numbers’) as I could, given what little I do know, was satisfying.

But I’m weird, and I know it.

A few years ago I realized it will never happen [what I want], so I’m trying to do it myself, slowly, moving it more in that direction.

At least DCS provides some tools here (though it takes a TON of work; I’m learning new things too). In that regard it is the only game in town.

Good to have some quality choices.

Absolutely, this is why my thought would be to use a minimally tweaked version of the “2D”/campaign simulation from F4 in a new engine with modern graphics and more complex flight dynamics (F4 feels very disconnected compared to DCS and Cliffs of Dover to me).

Stand on the shoulders of giants, and spend the dev time working on the “jump in and shoot things” part of the game, not the campaign engine which already exists!
