Did some tuning last night. I tend to start in sim before tweaking external parameters. I cut my HDR settings by half and dropped my antialiasing from 8 to 4. These changes smoothed out my VR performance. Not sure of my fps numbers but the sim has become flyable.
My issue is that my UI always starts at the left of my field of view. I can’t get it started properly despite applying fixes I found online. I can recenter the view once in the cockpit, so the issue is not a deal breaker.
I’ll continue tuning later today and thanks for the input.
I’ve put in about 10 hours since 4.37.4 dropped and, no surprise, it’s just more awesome! First, as mentioned above, OpenXR works right out of the box now. This is the one sim where I had no complaints about SteamVR. In some ways I still prefer for BMS. But I appreciate having the option; and I do like the quick Cntl-F2 overlay menu that comes with Open Composite. The new F-15C was fun previous to this latest update, but the lack of SA made it difficult to love long-term. Now, there’s reliable IFF and Link16. I feel invincible in it, so long as my invincibility accepts occasionally sacrificing my wingman while I turn-tail and run. The sim is smooth and gorgeous. I am running my Quest 3 with a 1.2x pixel override and even in the opening hours of a new campaign where BMS always brings a system to its knees, it runs respectably. Well, yes, DCS is a much better looking sim still and always will be. BMS, though, is where I continue to turn for repeatable moments of joy.
I’d love to. And maybe do an AAR. But with VR it’s just really hard. If BMS had a replay it would be doable. And screenshotting with the headset on turns the sound off, probably because doing so changes the window focus. I’ll need to fly 2D. Someday.
The most important thing is Link 16. Now we can see all targets as in DID F-22 TAW. Before that to find small targets on the ground was extremely difficult.
It’s funny, I never felt alone in Falcon4/AF/FF/BMS because you’ve got the AWACS feeding you the picture, at least compared to DCS where I feel completely in the dark in an aircraft without datalink… but the Link16 implementation in BMS is very much appreciated!
Oh yes! Finally fired up the game after the Update 4 went live. The Link 16 is a true game changer. My SA increased tenfold. It’s so much fun to fly even a simple BARCAP.
Next up - I need to learn the F-15C/D. I already finished the Ground Ops training missions (ramp start), it looks really impressive. When BMS 4.38 drops with new terrain engine Falcon will be even better.
I’ve been checking out the F-15 in Falcon BMS lately. It’s a nice bird with plenty of systems already modelled. Note that it’s not the usual “other aircraft” with Viper’s avionics. It is built from scratch with its own systems and flight model.
Here’s a ramp start of the Eagle in current version (4.37.4):
I’ve had poor luck getting 120s to track in TWS (or whatever the Eagle calls that function). In STT though, it has quite a reach. Nice to have the option to go back and forth between fully flushed out mounts in a campaign.
In TWS you’ve got to support the missiles almost all the way, so if you turn away or if the bandits get spooked and split up then at least one of the missiles is going to miss.
