Falcon BMS Discussion

Welcome to Mudspike!

My understanding is that to have VR in BMS you need an extra software, Nvidia Vision 3D is not compatible.

IIRC it’s called VorpX but I’m sure some one more skilled in this area will reply with more info soon!

The VR headsets you’re using are not compatible with Vision 3D or you’re saying BMS doesn’t support Vision 3D? F4 has always supported Vision 3D in every version I’ve used. I’m also pretty sure I never had any problems with the old eMagin headset with it, either, but that was a long time ago. It’s certainly possible that certain newer headsets might not be able to generate stereoscopic with F4.

I’m pretty sure the BMS rewrote the engine enough that whatever worked in F4 vanilla might effectually be broken (so to speak) in BMS.

I know some people managed VR with virtual desktop (but there’s no 3D effect) or Vorpx (but the support is not perfect).

Since the last BMS update there had been Directx 11 upgrades to the code so it might eventually be natively supported.

Please try to search in this forum for Vorpx and browse for some BMS posts.

There is another way. Accept it without worrying about VR…for now. I allow BMS to be the soul exception to my otherwise exclusive VR snobbery. I wouldn’t dare open xplane or DCS without VR. I haven’t touched ARMA in years simply because it lacks native VR support. BMS is much more than the world’s greatest publicly available Viper sim. It is a strategy game. Flights require a great deal of planning in order to succeed. Right now VR just isn’t conducive to playing BMS like the sim/board game it was intended to be. So, yes, it is possible to force BMS to be playable with VR. But without the native support, the experience is going to be a struggle, especially that all-important 2D planning and strategizing phase of play.

I stopped prodding and wishing. Instead, I adopted the attitude that the devs know what’s best given the game engine’s limitations as well as their own. BMS has been by far my most deeply satisfying COVID distraction. Should VR ever get native support, great; I will play even happier. But for now, 2D works. It is smooth. The look is stunning. And the gameplay is better than ever.

I’ve never taken it as snobbery, from you or anyone else at this address anyway. And I hope nobody takes my [many] references to VR the same. I get it.

My, personal, first priority is: “do I feel like I’m manipulating a machine, with a stick, rudder, and throttle, in the air, while I’m actually inside that thing?”. At descent framerates. And blowing stuff up. Graphics are a distant fourth on the list.

I’ve honestly tried to go back.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of debugging of missions (DCS) and, well, it’s not convenient to don the helmet on each run. Just feels awkward to me anymore. Granted this is without Track-IR (it’s been in a box for a couple of years now).

I love BMS. But I love to ‘fly’ DCS. I still think the BMS crew is going to do it, soon (in BMS time that is)

I’ve tried, and my brain just can’t do it. After playing DCS in VR, despite my LOVE of Falcon BMS and how amazingly smooth the entire massive world runs around you, I just can’t go back to TrackIR. It’s a regrettable shame, and I know it’s my own fault.

In fact, I gave away my TrackIR a couple months after getting my Rift S.

I sure hope so!

I almost did the same. Glad to have kept it a little longer.

I recall getting stereoscopic working in prior versions of BMS just fine. Now EECH1 doesn’t have depth info on the terrain, which fouls that sim all up where objects and cockpits are stereo but not the ground.

Latest BMS news, 4.35 updates

Israel Theater Released for 4.35

Georgia Theater released for 4.35

Hello Fellow pilots,

It has been a couple weeks since the Official TvT (Team vs. Team) finished and we saw an exciting end to the event.
We thought it was a good time to summarize the lessons learned and also share a bit of news on ongoing topics…

TvT Lessons learned
This 4th round was definitely full of good things and very positive surprises.

Things to keep:

  • Participation rates: With more than 200 registrations overall, this has been the most successful TvT event
  • Commanders and Ambassadors: We have seen different strategies at stake but both sides we able to quickly organize and address issues through diplomatic channels
  • Movable ground units: This is a key aspect that was implemented for this TvT. Locking some and enabling client driven ground strategy
  • Discord use: Even though this was new for some, it definitely helped on the coordination on a daily perspective
  • BMS Core team involvement: Having BMS team involved in the event is a key success factor in order to try and solve issues on the spot

Things to improve:

  • Setting expectations: Hype was very high the week before TvT start and some people built themselves an image of the TvT that wasn’t accurate (not very noob friendly, issues are bound to happen, …)
  • Network control: Seems obvious but many people struggle to understand that latency and bandwidth are vital and might be required (dependent on Client Internet quality - basically a xDSL connection with less than 2Mbps of upload is bound to cause issues)
  • Squadrons and wings: Considerations about booking full squadrons to wings is a hard topic, a minimum number of pilots in wing might be required…
  • Airbases locations: Maybe add an airbase closer to the flot but might be bombed pretty quickly
  • Ground units quantity: After 19 days, there were very few units left…

Things to come:
We are not sure if the BMS team will host an other official TvT this year but other communities will surely take the lead on future events.
There are obviously a couple fixes to be made in order to make sure we reach best performance in such community driven TvT.
But this TvT round definitely left us in a very nice impression given the stability overall on the server and ability to support a lot of clients.

Where is 4.35 U2 (4.35.2)?

Some of you have heard that Update 2 is coming and we see many reports overlapping known issues (thank you for everyone doing it).

So where do we stand on that?
Well, we are obviously working on it and it is a number priority as we speak.
Although a lot of reported bugs are already fixed, we are still ironing out a couple more complex ones (especially the ones without crash logs)…

As you imagine, we changed a lot in the code with 4.35 and optimization has been a big focus! But optimization can translate differently from one machine to the other and this can obviously bring us to complex “repro” cases.

So as usual, the team will always put quality forward, so we will take a bit more time to release this one (hopefully shorter than 3 - 4 falcon weeks )

So thank you for your support to the BMS team and Falcon community!
See you soon in the Falcon Skies!

And awesome is was! did you fly in the tvt too @chaz?

Anyone uses VorpX ?

I found in bms forum that least one guy says it works now with BMS and its quite nice solution to get VR in bms.

Yes, im really tired to single missions and would really like to get back to war.

So now im making some reading before i throw money to VorpX

HP G2 in use if it maters.

Did you see this?

I tried VorpX about a year back with it but it isn’t VR with the 3D pop out effect if that is what you are after - might be worth waiting.

Been flying some BMS lately to prep for the upcoming DCS updates. I just noticed the BMS website was recently moved to a new address! Your benchmarksims profile is transferred to the new website.

New website to bookmark :point_right: :point_right: https://www.falcon-bms.com/

(The old benchmarksims website is now read only.)

U3 for 4.35 was just released last night as well.

the tiny problem is that the old forum have theaters treads that are not (yet?) on the new one.
Aside of that, the website part is much better

Hey @Chaz, thanks for the heads-up. Those BMS guys are amazing in their dedication.

Just checked the U3 changlog…

  • AI now evades missiles in MP.

Really? After all these years and AI was just sitting there and taking it?! No wonder I’m so good!
