Falcon BMS Discussion

I’d also think that there would still be the capacity to do light gun signals with the tower down. I would go with @smokinhole’s recommended target to shut down the place for at least a couple of hours.

I guess in such case some kind of mobile ATC could be used?

that tempting virtual desire of ’ I want to bomb my home ’ in any flight sim

None taken.

A given.

For sure, with a suitable long & straight enough solid surface. Roads? Or VTOL?

I was thinking out loud in the context of a peer-to-peer conflict, wondering if the BMS engine allows for such things (been a LONG time since I played it; 20+ years maybe). My impression is many people desire that level of realism.

The question, “hmm, what to do?” came to me recently as I was adding the chance of a ‘rocket attack’ on your base (in DCS) when you enter the cockpit. I now take a moment to do a quick look around when I pop into the pit (in the Afghanistan campaign). Still deciding on the exact sequence: explosion’s then a siren or the other way around? An announcement over the loud speaker [of the obvious] would be a nice touch.

Worked in something similar circa 1982 for about 8 months. They had a RADAR version too but relied on a separate antenna.

I always assumed, if I was in charge, that attacking such things as, Command, Control & Communications (think Warden’s Rings) would be on the menu. Runways and flat tops being obvious.

This conversation has me curious as to how the Ukrainians are able to continue air ops so close to the front lines. Also, I think of my dad being at Da Nang in ‘68 and some of the rocket attacks they endured. Then there are the US bases in Afghanistan and Iraq. I suppose that rocket attacks are a an acceptable risk.

People are resourceful. Esp. when your home is being attacked, exhibit A: movie “Independence Day”: using morse to coordinate an attack on the alien hoard?

In the context of collisions, It really is a big sky  In VMC and little to no other non-miliary ops, the CTAF/UNICOM + see & avoid work just fine. How they keep things protected on the ground? No idea.

I do recall having to change airbases in BMS because the one I was using was made unusable by the enemy. But I cannot recall if my squadron was relocated or if I just placed myself elsewhere. I’ve never seen a rocket attack in BMS. As cool as the game is, it has it’s limitations.

Since 4.38 I’ve been struggling in VR in one respect, apparent object size. I tried every combination of config IPD values and SteamVR world size settings. Nothing gave the desired results. Airplanes inside about 50 meters looked HUGE. This made drogue refueling difficult and somewhat ridiculous. The basket had an apparent size of a king-sized mattress. Then someone on the BMS forum suggested:

set g_nVRExternalRenderingMode 2

That solved it! (Quest 3). Oddly, that setting is not mentioned in the VR manual.

My google foo is failing me. Is there anywhere to download missions for BMS? I’m going to learn the TE editor, but wondered if in the meantime users had shared them.

I’ve never sought them before but I am fairly sure that they must be available somewhere on the main BMS forum. The update is so new that it is possible nobody has submitted anything yet. The editor is quite easy to use.

We’ve been playing the new version for days now but oddly I only just tried the F-16. Another WOW! That pit! Even at 4K it’s stunning. And even moreso than 4.37 it is so easy to see what a tight workspace that is.

My issues are not tied to those settings I assume, as those are more GPU related. BMS runs mostly fine on stock settings (I can get 130+ FPS in TE and 60-90 FPS in the campaign), the only issue for me is the occasional stutter which I also noticed in other people videos that have more powerful CPUs. Perhaps there is some kind of optimization needed for the new terrain loading while you traverse the map?

Yeah, I agree. The optimization patch will be necessary.

Not having that issue, but could be that 64gb ddr5 ram might have something to do with that, similar to how that helped in dcs.

I also have 64GB RAM but DDR4, but I suspect the issue lies with my aging 4 core CPU which is most likely the bottleneck in my rig. Though it’s still able to run DCS without any stutters. That’s why I suspect BMS could be further optimized to boost its performance.

I have every confidence that it will be. This team is pretty clever. I too am getting the stutters. Some last for seconds and leave me certain that the game has crashed. Usually it lands on its feet somehow.

Definitely. The old 4-cores CPU is a bottleneck nowadays but not because, the lack of more cores in general, but because of performance per core (lower IPC). What I read, in general, stutters can be eliminated by DDR5 RAM or by faster DDR4 memory if possible, or by the CPU with 3D cache, such example: R7 5700X3D.

Also consider the fact that modern CPU and chipset support PCIE-4 with Resizable BAR/Smart Access Memory, also could help significantly older as well as modern GPUs, if this feature could be used.
Don’t forget also that RTX 4060 has only 8x PCIE links instead of full speed x16, with a combination with the older PCIE 3.0 MOBO that is not the best option and performance loses.

i5-6600K is the Skylate CPU, so I guess that chipset is running DDR4 with a lower Mhz, probably max. 2133 Mhz, or eventually DDR3 with 1600 Mhz, right?

I’m not seeing the stutters in BMS 4.38, but due to my older GPU, my fps are variable, and especially lower (than 60 fps) when I’m close to terrain.

Could you show me the video where is a stutters visible? I’m not saying there are no stutters, maybe I don’t know what exactly you mean in the game, or I’m ignoring it automatically.

DCS thankfully has a multi-core support engine. So, I agree, it runs pretty well nowadays.

I’m not @damson but I watched his video

There are some stutters and micro pauses in it. FFWD to the takeoff and you will notice one at about gear up.

Yeah, I tried a random time (around 20:00 minutes) and there was a visible stutter. Will check later my PC, if there is the same problem.
