Flying Circus -The Spiritual sequel to RoF!

I am a little late to the pile-on. Sorry. Happy and surprised that FC is being expanded.

Sadly no. The very first edition manual (which I haven’t been able to track down), had some wonderful aviation art that served as the background images. One in particular that stuck in my head was the scarf from the pilot whipping in the wind as the flew that trailed all over the page. Another was a pair of planes in a rolling duel, that trailed across two pages.

It really was well done and quiet beautiful. The newer versions are nice very functional manuals, but not art like these were.

Was that the manual on the very first Neoqb RoF? Is it on the disc, perhaps?

I think @Troll may be on the correct path. The RoF Ice manuals I uploaded were from the RoF forums and not the disc so that could be another possibility if the manual you have in mind is not on the original RoF disc.

Then again are you sure it was not these noeqb videos @jenrick?

Flying corps had the best manual; a reprint of a 1918 RFC manual.

Still have mine! Thanks for the reminder.

Then Major (temporary Brigadier General) Robert Smith-Barry invented the modern flying instructor. Hugh Trenchard GOC RAF later described him as the man who taught the world to fly. He is the subject of one of my public talks.

@Troll I did digital, so no disc sadly. I suspect it would be on there.

@wheelsup_cavu Nope, not the tutorial flight mission briefings, though I do certainly remember Rickenbacker talking me through everything. When I started playing RoF again a few years ago, I redid the campaign, and I like how much they had improved them.

One of the original RoF Beta testers and quite a few long time sim Players are still at M4T @jenrick . If anyone has the manual from the original version of the game it is likely to be one of them.

It was a slow Sunday morning…
So I took a deep dive into the archives.

Gotta love the Dicta Boelcke and map!

There is some really nice artwork in this manual!

Oh! I found the PDF too…

Many thanks to @Troll for finding the PDF. It wasn’t quite how I remembered it, but still one of the most well put together PDF manuals ever. It is actually designed to be viewed as a PDF, with vertical scrolling. You can see see in the last image Troll posted above, that the top of the plane on the left page, matches with the plane on the right page.

Screen shot from the PDF

With the push to electronic manuals rather than paper ones for the last 20 years, I’m amazed that so few publishers and studios create manuals to be read in a native electronic format.
