Foothold - Persian Gulf

First off that was hella fun! Chaotic, with a lot of pressure. All ranges very short if you’re flying a fast jet.

As I logged on, I was in a bit of a hurry because of that reported attack on Al Minhad, so I took up a frogfoot with the S13 zuniski rockets. Flew up, wheeled back in on a column of crawlies, blapped the living daylight out of ‘em. Of course they’re the blue defenders. Good job schurem!

After that I took to a viper, got killed a few times by MiG-29s shooting R77 at me while I hadn’t turned my RWR on (because if you take a hot jet, the crew chief who hates your guts and his job leaves that off). When @derby got going, we managed to grasp air superiority back for a while and pushed north a bit on the ground targets, shooting harms and I dropped a stick of CBU-97 that did something.

As the sun went down over war torn Dubai (they don’t give a F about all the shooting, all the lights are on!) a red convoy of crawlies was sighted near Al Minhad again. I tried finding them, but never got any in my sights. Dropped a couple cans of SFW on their last reported position and that got at least something.

How does one order up a JTAC? Flying in the dark is.. different. It looks cool, but DCS does not do draw distance of light sources well. Things like an afterburning jet or a missile should light up the sky for miles. Oh well. I never found the convoy again, despite trying the golden combo of F/A-18C GMT and FLIR. Got tired and logged off.

For those taking the server again in the current state, be warned, there’s a red air attack brewing on Al Minhad I guess. Su-34s and such. Might want to clean up using an eagle or tomcat for a bit. Also reinforce Al Minhad.

This is a long shot, but wondering if the server has the community UH-60L mod by any chance? If so, you can configure the DAP version as a pretty sweet HH-60G CSAR bird.

Not at the moment, as I was going to grab one for CSAR work. However if your sticking to the stay low, stay quiet, the CH-47 does an admirable job and can do it 160 knots.

I’ve not done it, but F10. Others and then Support I think - it’s sort of a ‘shopping cart’ like model where you buy stuff you want to do like ‘JTAC 9Line support’ or ‘Smoke Target’ and then once you spent the points you get the option to use it, e.g. place it in a location etc. as it then appears in the F10 menu direct.

Yeah, sorry for big screen grab but menus or map can do it:

We found the smoke really useful in VR..

Also, if there are a few on the server then you can share points with a joint mission - stuff like this which is neat:

I might be able to get on before dinner tonight but will definitely be around Saturday daytime/evening.

Restarted the server since I saw nobody was in session…that should make it daylight again. I can play much later..closer to 10PM Eastern…

Not yet. Easy fix but I’m not home right now.

Hopped on for a bit this afternoon. Took an Apache up to Sharjah twice and cleared out most of the air defenses. Got the SA-6 radar and couple of launchers, cleaned up a pair of Shilka’s and a few technicals with 23mm’s on them. Got a bit too close both times and either ate a MANPAD or ground fire (not sure which).

Saw red was launching some Mi-8’s to reinforce Sharjah and grabbed a F-15C. Hadn’t flown one of those in a long time, but quickly got things bound, and managed to down the Mi-8, a Fishbed, and a 2nd Mi-8 they tried to sneak in. Caught what was probably a MANPAD on the way out, but it didn’t knock me down or take out an engine. Made it back to Al Minhad and landed for points. Called it a day at that point.

Far as I know with some kind of CAP the runways at Sharjah should be easy picking, I don’t think red managed to get the SA-6 back up.

I need to get familiar with the front seat of the Apache, and the FCR again. Been a long time for either of them as I’m a rockets and guns kind of guy usually.

No worries Beach. I certainly don’t want to make more work for you.

But in case you feel inspired…

Awesome HH-60G Pave Hawk livery pack. The link to the liveries is in the PDF. FYI, any skins that you want to use with the DAP version, create a liveries folder UH60L_DAP. So for custom skins, in my Saved Games, I have DCS\Liveries\u60l and DCS\Liveries\u60l_DAP

Lastly, when installing custom liveries, you need not only a Liveries\UH-60L folder, but also a Liveries\UH-60L_DAP folder for any repaints for that repaint to be on the DAP.

Back on, tried the runways twice at Sharjah, no luck. Probably me being rusty in the F1 with Durandals. Saw red was sending a convoy to attack Al Minhad, so grabbed an Apache and killed it. Also destroyed some of the new air defenses they built at Sharjah, and got the SR there as well. Splashed a Mi-8 that was head to resupply Sharjah or the SAM site with a hellfire. I think that’s my first aerial kill in the Apache.

There is definitely an SA-15 left at Sharjah, and I found out there is an SA-15 at Fujairah as well (we’ll need to order another F-5).

I’m actually tempted to pickup the F-16 as I really enjoy weasling with the HTS, just hadn’t pulled the trigger for DCS since I have BMS. Decisions, decisions…

I managed to show 12L and 12R as ‘killed’ and got the Runway bomb mission points for Sharjah with a 2000 lb on each one. When I tried JDAMs etc it didn’t seem to register the ‘kill’ so maybe just plain bombs is what it is looking for on the runway mission triggers, not sure.

Tried to fly some logistics in the Huey. Yesterday I could not figure out how to load zone supplies, so I hauled half an ammo truck to the northern most airfield we had then. Unfortunately ran out of time before I could deliver the second half … This morning I joined Jenrick and BeachAV8R, who pounded an airfield. Thankfully they pointed me how to load the zone supplies via the crew menu, and I transported it later on to some FARP. I didn’t see any message that it was received there, just unloaded. Maybe I should go RTFM now

Great team work tonight, Sharjah finally fell.

Only problem flying the Apache, is no real option to punch out and keep your points. Pretty much went winchester 3-4 times and died trying to get back to the base to rearm.

Only pic I thought to snap was the aftermath of an enemy convoy having been executed.

Load up radar hellfires, fire up the FCR, and kill things.

Managed to fly into wires twice tonight, first launch out the gate, and then coming back from my set of attacks when I was winchester. I swear if only they made some kind of contraption they could put on them to make them more visible…

Oh man..what a great evening (cough - morning) of flying with @jenrick and @TeTeT …! It took hours..and many back and forths with Sharjah and (even more frustrating)…Sharjah Defense (that SAM complex just north of it). We must have beaten it down half a dozen times and it kept getting resupplied by convoy and helicopter. Finally..(FINALLY!) with @jenrick blazing guns and Hellfires in the Apache we managed to make it neutral..then just beat an Mi-8 to capture it. It was glorious. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can. I gotta go to sleep. So much fun….and learned a couple new things about the mission I’ll share tomorrow. Must. Sleep.

@jenrick with the last crate into Sharjah to bring it fully up to 4/4…

And a glorious view of a Hawk battery that set up after we turned the base BLUE…it was literally a race with this Mi-8..and we beat him by about 90 seconds…

Here the pics I took:

The zone supply crate and in the chat the tip how to get it loaded - not via ctld.

Barely visible is Jenrick’s Apache, on the way north.

The supply crate in our cargo hold, while we slowly crawl forward.

Jenrick on an attack run at Shariah.

Same for BeachAV8R

Dropped the zone supplies at a FARP, probably for no effect?

Good fun was had! The slower pace of the logistics in the Huey suit me quite well. It was impressive to see all the kills in the chat scroll by, though.

And the ejections…sooooo many ejections! It was great to see you on there… that is the great thing about this mission.. or campaign or whatever it is.. is that logistics plays such a huge part of it. At the very end before I logged off I took a helicopter and rescued my pilot that had been shot down an hour earlier… to my great surprise he had 550 credits or something like that.. It is fun stuff like that that makes the mission so much fun. Really enjoyed flying with everybody on it so far.

Soon we’ll have our hercs drop sticks of paratroopers, I’m sure  They’ll unduck the cargo thing soon enough.

It is a very fun playground, thank you for hosting it Beach! I feel the need to brush off my strike eagle.
