PLEASE..donate to the curator of the Foothold series of missions Leka:
Today we kick off Foothold - South Atlantic. This time..we go with no restrictions…whatever is in the default mission file is what we will play with. That means modern BLUE and modern RED…so…
I’d like to offer my thanks to Foothold modifier “santaowns” for allowing Mudspike to host his modified Leka Foothold mission architecture on our server. I apologize to those of you that don’t already own the South Atlantic map..I know it isn’t a super popular map..but I find the whole history of the Falklands to be extremely interesting. It will be interesting how we tackle the long leap from the islands to the mainland. There are two RED carrier groups between the Falklands and mainland Argentina which will at least provide a shorter attack route for getting a “Foothold” on the mainland (see what I did there??).
The mission has not been extensively play-tested and is still in development - so we will have to see how it goes. If we find some deal-breakers we can put it on the back burner and try something else.
Mission time is set for around the December solstice (December 21) at about 15 minutes prior to sunrise…giving nearly 17 hours of daylight. This may have to be adjusted once we get to the mainland as it is so far west from the Falklands that sunrise would be maybe an hour later. Weather is set for preset 7 for clouds and I adjusted the winds to reflect the reality of the Falklands…brisk westerlies (blowing to the east) that those latitudes are known for.
Hopping on for a bit in 2D and no voice as I think I’m going to be interrupted by a phone call..so if I drop off I’ll come back in later in VR and comms.
So first sortie of the new mission, Harrier off the Tarawa, I mean it’s the Falklands after all. I had my joysticks throttle still bound to the throttle, and didn’t realize it was set to full power. Hit the parking brake, and promptly went right over the edge. Well got that out of the way.
Take two, I head up to help clear out Mt. Pleasant, and then Goose Green. I have a special loathing for MANPADs by this point having been shot down, or at least damaged by them so many times in the various Foothold missions.
Overkill? All I know is that I won’t get shot down by an Igla AGAIN (well at least over Goose Green). Proceed to throw JDAM’s hither and yon, and as @Derbysieger is getting ready with a C-130, a Hip is inbound. In a remarkably good start to things, I manage to gun it into a flaming status, without getting killed, and followed up with a sidewinder kill.
Currently there is some weirdness with the logistics system. Currently we are unable to spawn zone or warehouse cargo. Zone’s are captureable via troops and ground units, but they don’t make a very good base with no supplies. Beach has taken it off line for the moment to investigate.
I will say the South Atlantic Terrian looks pretty reasonable, and the frames rates are pretty solid so far.
Server is back up. I disabled a couple of the logistics options..it did allow for supplies to be loaded (not what we are used to seeing)… Currently running a supply run to Mount Pleasant to see if it actually works…
Gull Point has been attritted, there is still a SA-13 (don’t ask how I know that) and some AAA. The primary SA-3 and the other SHORAD’s are all dead as far as I can tell.
When I got on last night Mt Pleasant had already been atritted. There were a few SHORADS left as well as some armor and artillery. I took care of it and except for a lonely BMP that @jenrick tookout when he joined in his harrier. I also bombed both runways at Mt. Pleasent. I then hopped into a C-130 and loaded some infantry and a Humvee to capture the Airbase
That’s a SAM right there lighting up on the radar patchmap. With strong flares lioke this you get a good enough target designation for a 2000lb JDAM or string of lofted Mk82s simply by targeting via the radar. I don’t care whether it’s day, night, heavy fog or cloudy - if you have your radar up you become a target
I’m headed out of town for a few days… so I made some quick and dirty changes to the Foothold configuration..
Lowered the wind by about half. I was hoping for about 25 to 30 mph. Let me know what you are seeing.
Lowered the ceiling such that the bottom of the clouds might be around 2000 m. Honestly, the weather there is far worse usually.
Made some changes to the logistics and supply settings due to zone supplies not being available. They are now available but not where we are used to seeing them. They just come up as supplies in the logistics menu I think. You don’t have to load them via the ground handling menus of the aircraft. I will try to fix that when I get home. As a result you will see AI doing things like zone capture and resupply.
Unfortunately I’m on the road now… I took some great screenshots of the attack on Port San Carlos last night. In those morning dawn hours that terrain sure does look great. I think the lack of trees has a huge performance impact as well… I’ve never had such smooth VR performance.
Spotting camouflage targets against that terrain pallet is pretty tough. I am so happy to have my JF 17 targeting pot back that thing is amazing. I brought my VR gear in my laptop with me… visiting my parents so I should be able to hop in once in a while.
