Foothold Syria - Cold War (Discussion/AAR]

That looks like a good distance to designate a target and drop low for the run-in.. In fact , you might be too close already

I’m looking at the water and all I’m thinking of.. is that it’s a SAM launch! Break right, dive and emergency jettison the stores

That is definitely absolutely a ZSU-23-4, looks like a B type I think - clear as day. Now I just need to sensor select right, and OH MY GOD WHY DID IT PUT TO SNOWPLOW ARGHH

Looks like a reasonable answer was given by Google AI?

A DCS server displaying an IP address instead of its name often indicates that the server cannot register its hostname with the ED Master Server due to DNS issues, dynamic IP changes, or improper port forwarding. It often happens because the server is not communicating properly with the DCS Master Server, or the server name contains restricted words.

Here are the main reasons this occurs:

  • Port Forwarding Issues: The required DCS ports (typically 10308) are not correctly forwarded to your PC, preventing the master server from reading the server name, showing only the IP address.
  • DNS or DHCP Issues: Your router may be handling DNS in a way that prevents it from resolving the device name, forcing the use of the IP address.
  • Server Name/Banned Words: If your server name contains words filtered by DCS as prohibited, the master server will only display the IP address.
  • Dynamic IP Change: If your ISP changes your public IP address, the DDNS service might not have updated the new IP in time.
  • Version Mismatch: If your server version does not match the latest DCS version, it may not register correctly in the server list.

Solutions to try:

  • Ensure Port Forwarding (10308 TCP/UDP) is correctly set up in your router.
  • Check your server name for potential banned words.
  • Verify your DDNS service is updating correctly.
  • Restart your router and server.

Stealing the LAN cable in the pilot’s lounge in St. Louis to update DCS on my laptop…

It’s more intermittent, so the usual advice of ports and stuff doesn’t really apply. Best guess is the ED master server gets a ping from Chris’s server periodically, it then checks the port is open at that IP and his residential ISP doesn’t like where it’s from (lol :switzerland:) and junks it - meaning it shows as not running (sometimes).

Can the Client run a different version and be causing the problem on their side?

No, as people that it worked for before see it not working with no version change, as intermittent.

Me and @Derbysieger beat up the reds east of Aleppo a bit. Then a bomber raid was inbound from the south and we both flexed west towards abu al dububblah to intercept. Of course the sams at pappa started chewing them up. I very cheakily style Marios kill on the surviving fencer with a quick sidewinder from my harrier. Sorry for that. Fangs out fighter pilot ■■■■. Discipline never my strong suit

After that I moseyed on back east to take care of a reported convoy inbound to Abu. The first maverick blew up three or four vehicles, including the SA-13! The other maverick took out the tank and I gunned the survivors. Scratch one convoy. Then I got called down and had to hastily put the harrier down to cash in the points.

I will be on a tad more later tonight. Sun might have set on the server, time to do some night stalking!

As for finding the server, I favorited the thing and now I just click favourites and voila, into the spike we go!

while I was beating up the defenses at Jirah two MiG-25 took off while I was fencing with the SA-6. I managed to shoot down one but the other shot me in turn. I ejected and then took a huey to rescue myself as I had a lot of points on me.

Apologies to @BeachAV8R @fearlessfrog and @Sryan last night for my longish departure during the heat of battle. Some things should probably be not mixed, lest it aggravate whatever dexterity challenges life has thrown your way. Like beer and coffee.

These guys are about a long M203 shot from our backyard patio. Fortunately for my health, we are separated by an alligator infested swamp.

First order of the day was to resupply Al Duhur.

Next, go after a CSAR. But take one CH-47F Chinook making a 170 kt RTB at low altitude after picking up a pilot on the run, add “missile tracking” RWR calls, the age of the Hook driver, and the afore mentioned beverage, and the sum is the pilot’s catching his beer koozie on the most upper right corner of the keyboard on a key labeled with a padlock.

This results not only a locked screen, but loss of aircraft control, comms, and the Chinook plowing a long fireball in the Syrian sand. The impact had such ferocity and my computer was so solidly locked up, that not even a restart would allow DCS to load. I had to shutdown, remove the power cord, and wait 60 seconds before bringing the whole mess back up. As if things couldn’t get any worse, my Q3 headset decided that this was a good time for an update :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Once all that was resolved, we returned to greet @jenrick and @TeTeT doing some fine drilling, filling, and killing work. Along with the system refresh, I decided that a change of aircraft would do well, and managed some CSARs in UH60 DAP out of Aleppo. Strangely, the first pilot halted right there and wouldn’t approach our aircraft. I picked up and move about 50 meters behind him, which compelled him to come onboard.

Yes, I fenced in shortly after this shot was taken.

As the light faded, Jenrick RTBs from a last mission before Chris gives the server a kick.

Hope to see you guys on again tonight.

I should have updated my laptop last night. Installing Syria is taking longer than I will be in St. Louis…

My shot up hog after delousing Jira almost completely. @Derbysieger got into a running air battle with the escort to a bomber strike and two floggers that were sent after him. But first he mission-killed the supply helo.

Another evening of fun flights. I also made a first promotion! yay! :wing:

Another sunset. Will be home in CLT around 0500 UTC…that would be the earliest I can reset the server..

Before I got paged this morning..while I was sipping my morning coffee I slipped into 2D mode and stole a Leopard 2 from Factory and drove it south down towards the SA-2 site that had shot me down the night before. Don’t let anyone tell you I don’t hold a grudge…

It took a good fifteen minutes to make the commute. There wasn’t a lot of terrain to take advantage of..but there were some mild contours that I took advantage of to close within about 6km to the site. I took advantage of the range on the APFSDS rounds to take out an SA-8 and a pair of ZSU-23-4s. I was careful to stay far out of range thinking I might get picked off by a AT-3 but this time the zone didn’t contain any..

I continued creeping forward..searching for and engaging targets that came into view. The scripting that makes the enemy move when engaged sometimes makes it harder..sometimes makes it easier to find them…

I have to admit..turning up my speakers connected to my PC with the sub-woofer and listening to that main gun bark is pretty satisfying…

Someone about to have a baaaaaaad day…

Eventually all the direct threats are eliminated..and just the toothless SA-2 complex and support vehicles are left.. The coaxial is enough for that…

The site goes neutral..then I got paged..and had to abandon ship. Hopefully someone was able to seize it before it got resupplied…

How it started

Took an Apache over to Jirah, and actually did a decent bit of damage before I took a MANPAD to the engines, the tail was there till my landing. But hey if you can walk away…

The usual race against the Hip wasn’t helped by the fact an A-10 is not that much faster.

Grab a Chinook…

Made it with about 1 nautical mile to spare. Getting pretty good at assault landing the Chinook.

The red convoys attacking/rocketing/artillery’ing Abu al-Duhur and Papa were out of control.

I think I cleaned up 3-4 of them while @TeTeT was running cargo all over hither and yon to keep up with the red ground offensive.

The lack of CAP was problematic however. I wasn’t winning the fight against a Su-27.

After TeTeT logged off, I ran some more cargo, getting Papa back up to strength.

And then more Red artillery convoys.

I was embarrassingly out of practice in the Gaz as a gunship, but I got them all eventually.

Red was threatening a downed pilot up by Incirlik. I was going to take an AH-6, but the weapons loadout wasn’t cooperating. So Kiowa instead. As I was taking off I thought I heard something…

Enemy engaged.

And a little door gun practice.

Finished the night up trying to take out November. Actually got it reasonably clear before a lucky shot by a ZSU-23 dropped a wing completely off. Decided to call it a night after that.

So, not to be that guy but to avoid being attacked by every direction, why don’t we focus on either the western route ( waypoints 20/21 ) or an eastern route ( waypoints 28 / 29 / 39) ? The last days have been… frantic.

I actually think the western route would be the smart choice right now.

Nah, east first because the west is more fun to fight over. Otherwise we keep defending Aleppo and Abu Du Hurethough taking hotel and Ras al Assad fro the sea would be fun too

Very painful day on the server. Was all alone trying to SEAD/DEAD a little with the Shrike. It’s very difficult to get through the layered defenses and make it out alive. And then the Shrike has so little killing power. Bring forth the A6 and give us the AGM-78!

Targetting a mobile convoy..

Little bit of damage..

Those puffs in the back? Thats where the shrikes landed.. Completely ballistic as I’ve done multiple things wrong.

Tons of hardware launched at me.. At some point I thought I made enough distance, fatal mistake.

Second pass..

Everything falls short of the target.

Ouch!

Rushing in on a layer of SA-2, SA-8, SA-19..

Jet another attempt at this..

Some guide..

The damage is almost non-existent

Brought her home (no points). It would be fun to do this to protect a strike but on your own it doesn’t make sense unless you also bring bombs or something.
