Foothold Syria - Cold War (Discussion/AAR]

Bombing runways is always worthwhile I think, even if there’s no mission for it, it means there’ll be no fighters taking off from that airfield for about 30min, enough time to go for the real target

Yes..I think this is acceptable and probably preferable..particularly when a zone is between a major base and where you want to go. I’m all about efficiency..particularly when I’m running out of gas…

I do feel that Foothold is giving me multiplayer experiences that are top notch and very memorable. Last night was no exception…although it started out very single-player-ish with a tense 30 minutes or so. I think @jenrick and @Sryan had logged off leaving me to my own devices for a bit. I came onto the map with Pinarbashi (5) BLUE and Gecitkale teetering on falling to BLUE. Gecitkale went neutral after some A-10 runs and I headed back to Pinarbashi to park my A-10A and pick up a CH-47. An odd thing happened..and it may have been coincidence..I think it was..but just after touchdown at Pinarbashi and despawning from my A-10, Pinarbashi turned neutral. I think that an Su-something attack on it must have killed what few units it had and it turned neutral.

“Oh crap..” I thought. I’m alone on the server..and now there are two WHITE/NEUTRAL areas that need to be reclaimed/claimed. I spawned into FARP London to get a CH-47 with two zone crates. My logic was take one crate to Pinarbashi and return it to BLUE..then dash over to Gecitkale and drop the other crate there to claim it and turn in BLUE. Solid plan.

Took off..started north for the short 5 minute flight maybe up to Pinarbashi…and then I see on the F10 map an Mi-8 from Ercan has taken off to reclaim Gecitkale…argh!! He is much closer..but I turn my CH-47 eastbound and redline it. I’m flying as low and fast as I can..and I can tell on the F10 map that he is going to reach the airfield just prior to me. As I close on Gecitkale..I take some light fire (I think that was those AK guys that you later started working on @TeTeT ) and I’m sweating… The Mi-8 is over the field..reversing direction and doing that slow whifferdill that they do to set up for their eventual landing. I scream into the zone..yank the nose up and bottom the collective…whap whap whap whap…guess who’s arrived bitches??

A supremely ugly landing follows..I ding up the CH-47..but I get my ramp open and frantically unload my cargo just as the Mi-8 is kicking up dust. We win the race. Gecitkale turns BLUE..fires up an air defense site..and blots the Mi-8 from the sky.

It was..pulse pounding..and fun..and just a great time. Despawned my now broken CH-47 and got another one and took another load up to Pinarbashi to return it to BLUE. Fortunately there was no Mi-8 headed that way while I was working on Gecitkale…

@jenrick was getting very experienced with landing broken A-10s..

…and bringing the C-130 into Pinarbashi to supply it up…

Me in my A-10A zipping across downtown. When I came into the mission later there were like 7 or 8 RED air over the island causing havoc. It settled down later..but I was having to flee to safety occasionally…

Those shootdown credit/experience points losses hurt..but I do feel they make me a more cautious pilot interested in self-preservation…

@jenrick finding all the enemy SAM sites…

The resupply of Pinarbashi..

I finally got promoted..! Aviator.. Not sure what I can do with that..maybe finally call in CAP flights?

 Love to read these … almost done with work, a few chores then I shouls be available.

I really want to jump in immediately, but also feel like it’s better to practice offline instead of risking REDs getting easy kills while I do meaningless stuff.

no, hop on! I will try not to let the red air touch you

The whole of Cyprus was almost liberated. What was left was the silkworm site.

Maverick, rockets and the gun used all in the first pass. This little hamlet they picked makes for a great target.

What was better hidden… was that OSA they had somewhere in town that only shot at me after my first pass.

Took him out and lit half the town on fire.

Can still do some BRRRRRRRT damage with this jet.

Since I was alone.. I asked for smoke to finish the job. Cyprus is free! Now to start our campaign on the red carrier group.

Rolled out the viggen.. With ye olde RB-04.. But this was the signal for red air to come in with 5+ jets so I swapped to a Tomcat.

Fox 3 x 2 on a pair of fulcrums

One got downed in the BVR joust. The other went down in the weeds. Once he was not hot on me I get told on by the AWACS and Fox-3 on him once more.

So, despite fire being a bit problematic.. it does look majestic when you down an aircraft and the whole place catches fire.

Some frogfoot still struggling somewhere over the water, the floggers backed off a long time ago.

This place would definitely benefit if I park my Tomcat here, with remaining Phoenixes (it goes into the warehouse, yes?)

Yesterday, I got the impression that for the first time Comms were a little bit convoluted.

Especially when guys are multi-crewing (which I highly support) they tend to communicate a lot more.

SRS would really help to deconflict general coordination/banter on Discord and even make it more realistic with the added sound effects.

A How-To can be found on github (including prompting clients to auto-connect):

Sorry for adding another item to you never ending to do list, Chris.

I noticed the same, but this does not necessarily require Chris to set up anything. We can and should use in-game VOIP to keep ICS out of Discord. I’ll get that set up for the next flight.

Perhaps 2026-03-02T19:00:00Z @Alpine or @Sryan ?

EDIT Realizing I am actually exhausted after running above TDP all day. Going to bed now

Might be difficult for me.. But later in the night there’s a big chance you can see me online  Hopefully I do not sadden anyone with my report..

Sat myself in a Hornet, first time in a long time. It’s a favorite of many but with Viper being our national fighter up until the 2020s I find myself very partial to it. Also, decades of BMS ment the flow of the viper comes so natural to me (even CZ). But to strikes ships in this sim we only have the viggen and the hornet for this era.. So I wanted to try the hornet again. This Frogfoot is coming for our assets so I with a lot of fumbling I managed to lock him.

Fox-1 and splash!

I continue my original purpose.. deal with a ship that wants to resupply the red carrier group. I find him, shoot at him..

… and also sink him. Or so I’m told when RTBing

Tons of MiGs are sent up..

Running is no use, friend.

But while I CAP, AI hornets are pummeling into the carrier group relentessly. I didn’t buy any strikes. The take all harpoons they can find from Larnaca (base 8) and shoot them into the ships.

Meaning we have sunk them and moved our own carriers in between Cyprus and Syria. That may be a little lacklustre compared to our attacks in Persian gulf where we did a big effort to sink the red ships. But now we have to choose to go for Turkiye or Syria first!

Did you just single handedly sink the whole enemy fleet?!

Red warships, go “find” yourself…

That’s even better. I always discard the in game voice client…

I think this one will be over in a couple of days tops, so let’s maybe look at that for the next one? It would be wise to restrict weapons next time.

Yes and I got to thinking about it… the lua comparison tool would work for the configuration files I’m sure… but I don’t think it would work for the edits necessary in the .miz file where I had to go and change all of the AI aircraft loadouts manually. By that I mean you do that in the in game mission editor..

That is interesting that the campaign logic knew to do that.

I’m thinking a week..just the northern part of Syria will require a lot of little steps..then the southern half of the map has a bit longer flight distances. I’m curious to see if the limited warehousing results in any constraints on weapons.

I have a theory on the mass disconnects. I do think it is related to the smoke/fire bug in DCS World where entire city blocks go up in flames due to the (relatively) new DCS splash damage. Last night I think @jenrick and @Sryan experienced a disconnect at the very second my 2000 lb. bomb hit the runway. I think the server chokes when that happens..but apparently the local client (me) does not get booted. The same happened a couple days ago when I think 4 clients got booted at once..I can’t correlate that to a specific bomb drop..but with AI flights doing their thing, it is in the realm of possibility. So be on the lookout for that…

Did you two just get kicked?

Ok I don’t have a lot of time so I’m just going to mass drop the screenshots now and write the AAR later. Anyways, flew an hour and a half with @Sryan and he’s just amazing!

Long story short - Me and @Sryan created a beachhead on Turkey!

Who would have thought the CH-47 could be so much fun. I’ve really been enjoying it..even though I haven’t really “learned it”…

No idea if important but that’s a script reference to the ‘UH-60L Black Hawk community mod’. So maybe try without that on the server as a long shot?
