I went to the FARP that @TheAlmightySnark built for us and put down a few FIM-92 troops, so that it was not completely defenseless to air attacks. He picked a great spot but the spawning is a bit funny around here.
I got too close to something.. I got a bit lucky with the auto-rotate (I am amazed this shot up roter provided enough lift for a survivable landing..). Also, I didn’t instant teamkill myself when I hopped out. That’s great news @fearlessfrog that happened to us a lot in the past.
In the end we send troops (aweful.. they cannot pathfind through urban terrain at all..) and some bradleys into the airfield but in the end it was @TheAlmightySnark that did all of the work cleaning the airport up. He then also flew in to capture it.
That was a lovely afternoon together @Sryan ! You did quite a bit as well, you got the search and fire radar of the SA-2’s and knocked out a few other short range dangers!
Cleaning up with the Mi-24’s gun is so so much fun.
Winchester and Bingo, I am desperately trying to apply what @jenrick thought me in the other thread. I keep it coming down relatively calm, although I am gripping my stuff white-knuckled hard. I am trying to stay ahead of every movement.
@Sryan and I savaged red air in the dark. Took up the M2000, and caught a Frogfoot trying to exercise discretion with a S530. Then I headed after a pair of fishbeds, but they ran off at full burner. Yes I could run them down, but that would put me well into red territory and I didn’t want to eat a SAM. Caught another Frogfoot with a S530. For those keeping score I am out of radar missiles. A bomber intercept mission came in, and Sryan took off in a Tomcat. I decided to head that way after the Cargo plane I was stalking turned more easterly and I again don’t want a SAM surprise.
The bomber raid turned around (I can’t blame them when the AN/AWG-9 pops up on the RWR). I elected to RTB as my Magic’s were probably getting close to warming back up (you’ve got 90 minutes of coolant, and turning on the MWS cuts that in half). Low and behold a trio of Mirage F1’s pop up. Many thanks to Sryan for calling them out as I was messing with the INS trying to get the synthetic runway display thing to function. Sryan knocked one down with a Phoenix, and I grabbed a leaker headed S of the merge. Got him with a Magic, and in the dark, put my auto acquisition radar into vertical and caught the last F1 by luck when making a circle. Dropped him with a Magic as well. The runway lights were thankfully on, so no drama getting down.
Argh.. I rebooted the server PC after I got home from vacation a few days ago and forgot to start the remote access software…so I’m unable to reset the server and bring about sunrise..
So..experimenting with the Logitech Wingman controller had pros and cons. Night, NVG, helicopter ops were probably not the ideal testing parameters..but whatever…
First up was loading up some crates to build Bradleys… The flight over towards Bravo was nothing short of terrifying on a laptop with essentially an X-Box controller. The high terrain..lack of depth perception..and no TrackIR or VR..well..I was lucky to survive. I actually rolled the helicopter over on landing north of Bravo but the crates survived and were unloadable…
Once built..I parked on Bradley and took the other south towards Bravo. Always a bit of a fun cat and mouse…came across the two resident SAM vehicles first..of course..when I started unloading on them that stirred up the BMP/tank platoon that then started stalking me…
The bloom upon TOW impact is spectacular..and blinding..and makes it hard to know if anyone is shooting back at you. Best option is to shoot..then move to cover instead of scanning for targets…
Also happened to catch an Mi-8 bringing in resupply..which was a nice bonus…
Then I got killed by a BMP..so I brought my other Bradley down and we had a fantastic duel through the olive groves or whatever those are all over the map. Killed a BMP and came face to face with a T-62 and managed to shoot him before he could shoot me…
Then it was on to the SA=2 site..cleaned that up with the coaxial gun or whatever it is…
Headed down south when @jenrick showed up…or rather..used CA to move the Bradley south while I hopped in a CH-47 to capture Bravo. Another terrifying helicopter sortie.
Meanwhile @jenrick destroyed everything at the next zone south in his Apache. I managed to drive onto the airfield as he was killing the last unit and put some HE rounds into a MiG-21 as it was taking off…he flew for a minute or so and crashed. Bummer you get no credits for destroying things while in Combined Arms..but it is still satisfying…
Me repositioning on the carrier in the port..I have no idea why it was doing the fire out the stack trick like the Shockwave truck…
I was wondering about that! Took me a lot of effort to get us that ship and know you guys been playing with it through the night and… leave it like that…
Our Commander in Chief saw the Kuznetsov smoking and he wanted something better. So now we have fire coming out of the stack. Yuge fire. The biggest you’ve ever seen. Nobody’s seen anything like it.
Haha yeah tried a sortie in the Mig-29 in the dark but firstly I do not know the aircraft well enough, and secondly it feels horrible in the black of the dark. I mostly gently meander as if I was flying a 747.
Cyprus was getting bombed so hard we lost territory. it got turned to neutral because all our guys died.. While Snark recaptured the lost base, I planted another Hawk very high (600m QNE) in the Kyrenia mountain range. It was helping us defend Cyprus as Snark was downing the attackers in his F1EE. Later, a wave of MiGs and a frogfoot came to attack Cyprus also, and Snark and I perished after eradicating all but 1 assailant. Although Snark ejected, so high his character is probably still descending.
I think the server might be having a bit of a moment. I’ve shot multiple helo’s and aircraft down with succesful sorties(so landing) and yet the stats do not reflect this currently.
Had a good afternoon run with @Sryan and @TheAlmightySnark. Hopped on before I ran some errands with @Sryan, and did some work up at Charlie in the F-100.
Did alright with some CBU’s and hard bombs. Completely shanked one drop of each, but fortunately was able to clean up with the cannons. I did learn a high drag snake eye drop in a ~40 degree dive actually works just fine in case you forget to set the correct switch. Sryan brough in a CH-47, and the troops he landed cleared it out.
I ran my errands and came back, to some ZELL action. Sryan and I took Huns up to Minakh, while Snark took his trusty Mirage F1. Teamwork baby! The initial pass was awesome with Sryan dropping just a few seconds before I did, and jets zipping across the site. Got a bunch infantry and two trucks, so I came back for a second pass. I thought I got shot down on my second pass, but upon TacView review, I pulled up before my last rockeye released and lofted up into my wing and took me out. Doh!
Second sortie up to Minakh hard bombs in auto mode for something different. Took out some artillery. Followed that with some rockets and took out a technical and damaged 2 others. I went in to strafe, and RedFors most dangerous air defense unit, the BMP, got me.
We had a flight of Hinds heading towards Hatay, so I grabbed a M2000. Between my 4 missiles, Snark’s 2, 1 HAWK, and TWENTY-SEVEN Stingers we were able to kill the 2 Hinds.
With no air to ground stores, it of course made sense to go up to Minakh in my guns only M2000 and proceeded to strafe about 90% of the remaining units out existence. Came back, grabbed a Hind and some troops. Killed a T-80 that I knew was there, and 2 ZSU technicals. Dropped my troops and Minakh has been liberated.
