Game Deals & Book thread

Thanks, I’ll look into that.

Thanks for mentioning that game. I had close to 300 hours in their preceding WW2 games and was a backer for Call to arms. After playing several early builds I forgot about it for a few years until you mentioned it. Tonight I reinstalled it and played a few skirmishes as well as giving the new conquest game mode a go, which I liked. To me this game really shines with realistic damage turned on, making bullets and explosions much more deadly.

You guys, Wargame Red Dragon is free on Epic. Get it. It will kick you rear even on n00b AI setting until you learn to deal with the info overload and let your underlings fend for themselves.

If anyone has questions or a need of tips on that game, I have about 500 hours on it and about as much on its predecessors. It is truly excellent.

I really really struggled with War game series. I loved the style but just kept getting my butt handed to me.

Don’t forget to grab the free DLC packs as well, because Epic doesn’t do a great job in showing them.

They’re throwing in the Dutch and Israel for free?! nice.

If you struggle with this series, try to zoom out. Do not look at individual tanks or dudes. Treat them like paint. Paint that bit of map blue. Keep adding paint. Now notice how not every blue is the same.

Infantry is pretty good at holding buildings but squishy when out in the open. Tanks are good at range but die when close up to other things.

The aim of the game however, is not to paint the map blue. It is to make the other guy run out of paint. This is a very important bit about WGRD.

So think about kill sacs. Fire zones. If I paint those houses and this treeline blue, he will have to send the red dudes into their fire. And they’ll die. All of them.

And then the game gets even more complicated, as red will throw artillery or air attacks on your boys in the village. And the boys in the treeline. And put down a smoke curtain to roll right on up.

Yeah it’s like drinking from a firehose. So pare it down while learning what’s what. Run at half or lower speed. Make gimped decks (unit collections) for the AI for you to beat up on. A red deck of only BTR-60 riding infantry and T-55 tanks (and an officer in a jeep). No artillery, no air defence. Beat up on him until your blue blobs don’t get overrun no more. Then add in more complex stuff.

Such a fun game

Nah. Fearless linked the freeLC’s like Russian roulette and norse dragon units. Those are always free on other platforms as well. You will still have to pay to play Finland, Yugoslavia, Israel and the Netherlands.

Good advice on learning the game! I would add that you should not skimp on reconnaissance, and that layered air defenses usually work best. Guns are great for suppressing planes (reducing their accuracy and sometimes makes them fail to employ weapons completely) and missiles are great for destroying them (if they hit). If you’re pushing as NATO, always have a plan to deal with ATGM’s since the Soviets loved sticking those things to just about anything. Smoke, artillery or flanking maneuvers help throwing their aim off.
