Hands-on with Quest 3 headset shows Meta's going all in on mixed reality

Nice vid.

That’s it. I’m bequeathing the Quest Pro to the kids and going all in on the Quest 3  :metal:

Another informational: I’m still dithering on which battery to go for…

That’s a really nice video. The Quest 3 looks really good. The blacks look quite a bit better in the Q2…but still…

I was thinking about grabbing a head strap with charger but it occurred to me, why not grab a charger I can also use for other things?

Ended up grabbing this from BestBuy today.

If anyone’s interested, I’ll let you know how it works once I get it charged up enough to try it.

I did the same, except I got a 40,000mAh battery from Amazon, with USB-C PD out. Finally got to try it out today. Playing in an empty hangar maximum roomscale I was able to run Into the Radius (Stalker VR, basically) for several hours today without significantly draining the Q3 battery from 100%.
ETA: I think the exact numbers were: starting with 100%, after 3+ hours it was still at 87%. I consider this pretty much unlimited assuming one doesn’t live in VR and charges the battery between sessions. Wireless VR (and standalone) is super cool!

Also, that USB hub works excellently. Keeps it charged at 100 for unlimited playtime. Thanks for the recommendation!

My new toy seems to do the same. Bright green “charging” light for several hours on my Quest 3, with my headset reading full power throughout.

It appears I will run out of fuel before this thing does, apparently.

Agreed. The flexibility to choose between tethered, quasi-wireless with the external battery and fully independent is awesome.

I played DCS on wireless* for 4 hours straight and was still at 90% tonight. Super happy with the Quest 3, and have already given away my G2.

*Let me clarify, I was half asleep when posting: wireless data (virtual desktop), USB charging plugged in. Sorry, don’t know why I put it the way I did, didn’t mean to mislead. I never have been able to make the link cable work as well as VD does over Wi-Fi.

So, I was browsing the Marriott points store today… and you can pick up the Quest 3 there. Probably not the most efficient way to spend hotel points…but I’m sorely tempted.

Did you take the plunge yet Chris? I’m definitely interested in the Quest 3, but my Reverb G2 is still working well on my almost 4 year old PC. I’m likely to upgrade the PC at some point next year (if I can stop throwing money at astronomy gear ). With that in mind I am on the fence as to whether it is the right time for me to purchase a new VR headset. Probably not, if I am completely objective about it.

if you have no intention of using AR or the Built In GPU/Apps, then the upgrade will be less exciting for you.

I’ve read dozens of reviews saying the visual difference is small for PC only gaming, and there’s still issues with Encoding on AMD Cards.

I do like the idea of doing some mobile VR gaming, but if I am completely honest, it would be used for PC simming 95% of the time once the novelty wears off. I like the idea of the pancake lenses and wider FOV. I’ll think on it a little more. I almost pulled the trigger on release day, but held off.

I had an idea that something like this might exist, and after a quick search, found one.

Apparently will keep even a quest three charged while linked to a PC as long as you connect the cables in the correct order.

Might be cool to have around… Will look to see if there are other similar products.

I hope you pull the trigger @PaulRix. But if not, something better will come along soon so I wouldn’t suffer the decision too much. FWIW, I toyed with Meta Horizons and AR briefly and didn’t really find it more worth of my time than siming with a wire connected to the PC. I’ll unplug to play Asgard’s Wrath 2 when it comes out as it came free with the early purchase. But as a pure PC headset with now about 100 hours of use, it just works. I have zero complaint. Not one thing bothers me.

Thanks Eric. Out of interest, does it work with Condor 2 without resorting to voodoo black magic and hoop jumping?

I haven’t played Condor since the end of Covid. I’ll check and report back.

Unfortunately Condor has dumped my account. My phone remembers the login but it is wiped. The password recovery doesn’t work. The account is gone completely.
