It’s a shame there is no eye tracking, as that makes the Quest Pro pretty appealing. In terms of performance that would really help DCS etc. especially if not paired with a 4090. The Quest 3 seems really good value but having that better mobile processor and battery just so I will connect it to a PC is a tough one to swallow even of the price is great. Not easy choices, but good to have choices.
Yeah, I might see myself getting a used or discounted Quest 3 in a year or two if DCS 3.0 finally makes it feasible for people with normal PCs to try VR. (The sad part of this comment is that I rock a 3080ti)
I’ve been happy with my Quest 2 since it came out years ago. Much of that time it was plugged into a PC powered by a 7th gen i7 and a 1080 and ran DCS pretty capably until Syria and the Channel maps. Was it ever the best headset? Nope. But it always worked and rarely needed tweaking, modding, or 3rd party-ing. For me, he Quest 3 will be an easy day one purchase.
What sweet spot? It’s allll sweet spot
Maybe I’d use it more with a 409x, but the image quality suffers with FR enough that any increase in fps is hardly noticed. IMHO.
I think the Quest 3 panels are a higher resolution (2064 x 2208) than the Pro (1920 x 1800) so was thinking it would help a bit more (maybe). It does tend to be an Aero and Pimax Crystal needed thing though absolutely.
I am just so pleased there is finally a Meta headset that I don’t need to follow and read all about and make my mind up on. I love my Pico 4!
BTW UploadVR has a nice quick comparison to all other main competition headsets:
At least a comparison to all other main standalone headsets…
If not, that comparison is woefully incomplete.
Yeah, that’s why I said “competition” headsets They are only comparing to similar types that you may be considering - otherwise we are talking a lot of comparisons!
Even though my decision was made, I found the comparison helpful. 30 seconds of perusing as opposed to 5 minutes of watching a wannabe influencer bloviate on YouTube.
I see your point.
That said, you’re using your Pico for PC VR games, aren’t you?
This is what I believe most flightsimmers are looking for in a VR headset.
So you must forgive me for considering the competition of these headsets to be against other PC VR headsets, too.
Yes. If you haven’t seen it, I’d like to recommend this site for such comparisons.
UploadVR has always been such a trash site. Fun fact, the author of that article was the original reddit troll that Palmer Luckey called an ‘insufferable fanboy’ due to how sycophantic he was towards Oculus/Facebook.
Really! Ha!
Yeah, I had a number of big arguments with him back in the day, but I find the site better than many others. I didn’t read the article, as I said - I don’t want this headset, but I checked the spec comparison tables, which are useful.
Yeah, he was a weird one for sure and people do change I guess. In the olden days of Vive vs Rift when PC VR first emerged he was so hardcore that eventually he admitted it was mainly about trying to make Valve lose rather than Oculus win (he got wronged by Steam at some point I guess), so a sort of Jihad that eventually got him a writing gig. I can get being really keen on something to keep wanting to do it but to be driven basically by not liking the competitor so much as the reason to do it is next level internet stuff.
What did you decide on, if you don’t mind me asking?
Quest 3. I never want the best unless the best also happens to be the easiest. Also, controller availability and quality are very important to me.
Cool! Looking forward to read about your findings.
Q3 and VR1 from Somnium both come with hi-res color passthrough cameras. I wonder if this will finally solve the issues of hand tracking…
I use hand tracking with the Q2 when I am in the Quest GUI. It works quite well. Definitely not Minority-Report-well but good enough to rarely touch a controller.
I just pre-ordered the Quest 3. I’ve been waiting like a vulture for it to drop, almost bought a Pro this summer. I’m looking forward to Reverb G2-like resolution with better lenses and tracking, and will probably start bringing it on the road like I used to my Rift-S.
I decided to add a Quest 3 to our growing Meta family, so pre-ordered a Q3. I’m in love with the pancake lenses, so improved resolution, chipset, and passthrough made it a no brainer. Our Quest 2 has been bullet proof, surviving a year of Beat Saber and Gorilla Tag use by 10 to 12 year-olds. I use to raise hell when they didn’t put back it in its carrying case, but finally gave up. I often find the headset, controllers, and charger laying in a pile in the corner of their room, like the latest plush toy. They have been clamoring for another Q2, so I don’t mind adding another Meta product. I’m happy with the software and the fact that Meta add parent-managed accounts.
Will let you know how it goes. ETA is 10.10.2023.
