Health and Fitness Thread (2022)

That is the big turn off for more physically active VR games…once you start to sweat, the headset gets kind of gross, not to mention easily fogged up.

It occurs to me that a lighter headset for the purpose of “exergaming” would be an awesome thing to have. I’d much prefer that to a stationary bike. God, would I ever.

I should spring for getting a Prop Cycle cabinet in my home!

I’ll definitely be stopping by the sports store today for a nice headband or two.

I have used different types of exercise bike at different gym clubs; Recumbent Bike, Indoor Bike, Spinner, Air Bike, UpRight.

Today I pulled the trigger on this rowing machine after watching numerous review videos on “budget” machines you can get on Amazon …

Really looking forward to getting my cardio back up to snuff with low impact. If I like it, I’ll probably invest in a more advanced unit. I really like the design of this magnetic resistance unit … it has a simplistic display underneath a nice place to put a tablet or screen of some sort. I’m actually depending on my excellent Garmin Instinct watch for biometrics since it has a built in Indoor Rowing activity tracker.

Looks like a nice rower @Elby:sunglasses:

I’m almost a year in now. My iFit account tells me that I have completed 103 workouts so far this year, which isn’t all that impressive when I think about it, but I’m down 19 Lbs since I started, my at rest heart rate is lower and my blood pressure has also gone down (it had been creeping up along with my weight). As you well know, being on the road a lot really makes it difficult to eat properly and exercise but all things considered, I’m quite pleased with my progress. I hope it works out for you too Elby!

This year’s been a drastic change for me in terms of fitness. I completely changed my diet and started doing cycling, running and rock climbing since July. I lost 45 lbs since then. A few stats for this year so far:

With my bike:

  • 83 rides
  • Time: 140h
  • Distance: 3127 km
  • Elevation gain: 8921 m
  • Longest ride: 168 km.

Running:

  • 22 runs
  • Time: 26 h
  • Distance: 243 km
  • Elevation gain: 1036 m
  • Longest run: 21.9 km

Good on ya!

I started out life as a cyclist, but then my knees starting “clicking” … not a good feeling. Then I became a runner and every time I’d run I’d say to myself, “Running is life. I will never stop running”. I actually used to limp around with a suspected hip problem when I was in my early 40’s! Then I heard doctors say that you shouldn’t keep running after the age of 40 because of joint related issues so it really dwindled off to absolutley zero running as I was worried I’d have to get a hip replacement.

At 56, all my joints are rocking and rolling and rowing looks absolutely amazing for a full body + cardio workout! You can even hold the handles upside down for a bicep workout.

So I guess a final update for this 2022 thread… I started the year weighing in at 228 Lbs. Today I’m at 206. So, nothing spectacular, but I’ll take it. The rower has been a big part of it, but also I’m eating a little better, especially when I’m at home. Oh, I also managed to lower my blood pressure back to the normal range (it was trending upwards)…and my at rest heart rate has dropped as well. Obviously, still a lot of room for improvement, so the journey continues into 2023.

How’s that rower treating you @Elby ?

That’s awesome. I’ve only done 2 half hour sessions on it so far … works well and I find I can consistently get my heart rate into a nice zone but I find it a bit tedious. I have it set up on a rubber mat in front of a screen in the upstairs office as my wife likes to use it too but I prefer getting outside for exercise. I’ve been doing 5k jog/walks  every other day since I’m on vacation for the next three weeks … just takin 'er easy. My legs are toast LOL! I think I’ll try alternating rowing one day, jogging the next. I won’t have much time to jog weekdays when I’m back at work but I’ll probably jog on the weekends. I cannot let my cardio slide again.

If you manage to keep that up you will have no problems achieving your goals. :sunglasses:

FWIW check out “Battle Rope”

Random link:

This thing sneaks up on you; first few minutes go pretty easy then by minute 5? You feel the burn. I don’t go too crazy but is a good wake me up exercise.

The claim is a good aerobic workout (guess it is but not like say swimming) but it seems to hit the core muscles hard. Simple tool that works…got to get back at them cus, well, it’s that time of year

Glad to hear some are still having success, even if it is limited. 2022 was a crap year for me when it came to weight loss and health issues. Weight wise I have been pretty much been set back to where I was in March 2020.

Inspirational stuff guys

Probably the one thing I miss most about the Army is the ‘forced’ PT. I loved being fit and I loved the way I felt when I was fit and once I left and got older the motivation to get out there and be active got harder and harder…

One of the best things that happened to me was buying a rural property. There is always some kind of physical activity to do. For the past few days I have been spending about 2 hours per day walking up and down hills with a 20L(kg) spray pack on my back taking care of weeds that I can’t get to on the quad bike. As I used to tell folks at work before I retired: “hey, I get to go for a bushwalk every weekend whether I want to or not”

Same here, I pretty much stalled fitness-wise last year.

…and I still managed to ■■■■ up my knee again, so it will take a week or two until I can do anything resembling sports again.

I will try to start a bit less ambitious this year, and go for an hour of walking at least once or twice a week, and only jog once walking gets too boring.
