Side note: the Harrier can be “entertaining” if you turn off the SAS in DCS.
F-15’s have a combination system, so you have the CSBPC, which is a hydromechanical system which essentially does what Aero said in regards to scheduling G force and trimming it for 1 G.
You also have the CAS system in all axes, which is a fully automatic system that has its own control laws and makes the aircraft more stable and departure resistant. It also accepts inputs (there is a force sensor in the stick) and commands based on what the pilot is asking for.
The electronic system has 1/3rd authority over the flight controls and the CSBPC has 2/3rds. Normally they are in agreement and thus have no issues. If there was a disagreement then the CSBPC would override the CAS system and you would be flying it essentially manually. If the CSBPC failed the jet is still fully controllable with the force sensor in the stick, you just have 1/3rd control authority, aircraft have landed when issues of that sort have happened.
Most SAS systems are some form of dampening that prevents or minimizes undesirable characteristics, the KA-50, and F-5 system are good examples of these, they are not really any kind of FBW they are simply taking control inputs versus acceleration and then counteracting or dampening them in some manner, IE preventing adverse yaw and dutch roll in the F-5, making the Ka-50 far more controllable than it would be otherwise.
The F-15s CAS is in the same vein but it does have its own control laws that it is trying to do to keep the aircraft stable as well.
I tink I was too flippant with the “dumbed down” phrase and I apologize.
Chuck’s guides are not that. The are well written instructions that cut through a lot of the “nice to know” stuff to focus on the “need to know” stuff. I use them all the time. (Plus they are a good way to take look at a plane you haven’t purchased yet.
Again, Mea Copa. Chuck Rocks!
NTTR expansion to the coast is a must, just on practicality and heck of allot more fun flying longer distance to carrier.
You can also run “Joint Tactical Operations” using the A-10C, Harriers, F-18’s and F-14s taking off from carriers and airbases BARCAP, CAS, Interdiction type and training range areas, situations bla, bla…

They need to do this for us, just that simple!
They’ve already expanded the map once, and that was nice of them. It would be nice if they did it again, but by no means are we entitled to it.
ED has yet other plans to build sub-sequence maps and remember NTTR map some “planed” zones was depleted after the second expansion (NTC and CA training zone talking some time by Wags), has the same situation with the community claim of making the california coastline to put carriers or NAS Fallon in the north, outside of the NTTR scope.
The same situation of Wishlist’s:
Caucasus:
- Make them Crimea, Baku, Chechen, Ucrania and Turkey airbases.
Normandy:
- Make all South / Mid England and the coast of Benelux to Denmark.
Persian Gulf
- Where are Saudi Arabia, Iran North Coast, Kuwait, Bahrein and Qatar.
Surely more “claims” coming with Syria, Falklands, Afghanistan, etc.
A little topic cleanup is in order. I hope no one gets offended that I deleted a couple of posts in addition to the ones that the @moderators team decided did not need to stick around.
Humour and sarcasm sometimes does not convey well when written - so be careful that your audience understands. Things can then get out of control and we tend to dig in instead of taking a moment to think about what, and how, we are saying something. They are also not veils to hide behind.
If you have any problems or concerns with this, please take it up with the @moderators. We are open to conversation.
Does anyone else still play or recently played Fleet defender?
I’m curious because I loaded it up a few weeks ago after buying it on steam. I read the manual all the way through and aside from not finding the quick reference card in there I’ve been having a blast with it.
It’s dated and the graphics make my brain hurt after an hour or 2 but as a 20 Yr old game I really enjoy it!
Does anyone else still spin it up or is it just my general tomcat obsession tinting my specs?
I have it, but the impression I had was that it required a whole rigamarole with dosbox to get to work, and I just didn’t have the motivation. How has your installation experience been?
I’d wager half the P3D screenshots thread is just me in the F-14, and I still play SF2:NA, so you’re definitely not alone in your Turkey obsession.
I bought it on steam and apart from a bit of Confusion regarding the digital voices (I was SURE it had them) and a quick 2 minute fix for that it ran like a charm.
I caught the 4th wire on my first trap and my wife ran in to see what the shouting was
I buy a fair few old games to try and relive my youth (dark forces 1 and jedi Knight recently) and Fleet defender is the only one to really grip me.
But I read the navops manual on the f14a AND B just to see the differences in the text so maybe I’m not the best person ask…
I’ve never actually played this is it worth tracking down a copy while I’m waiting for heatblur?
I think you can get it on digital download but I’d personally not spend the money. $40 is kinda steep for SF2. Better to tuck that money away for the F-14 as I doubt it’s that far off – spend time with the Su-33 and Bug instead.
SF2 is an odd bird. It occupies a position in the sim hierchy somewhere between Ace Combat and the Flaming Cliffs modules for DCS. It’s broad but very shallow simulation wise. There are a massive amount of aircraft to fly, an even bigger number still of AI only aircraft. It has campaigns that is essentially a dynamic mission maker where basic amounts of world state are carried over between missions (FEBA, aircraft numbers, supplies). NA was cool because it attempts to simulate massive, multi element naval strikes with jamming, SEAD and fighter support in a game that doesn’t simulate basic principles of doppler radar or notching.
TK, the maker, always had grand ambitions, but always seemed to struggle on where to compromise with his limited resources.
I enjoy it on it’s terms, but I’m with @Franze. I don’t think it’s worth the price tag, especially when the HB Tomcat is probably going to be out within the next three or four months.
The fifth stage is acceptance. Well done.
I still play it from time to time. Really good game even to this day IMHO.
I posted some guides on steam community - one on how to enable the digitized speech and the other with the link for the proper Gold version manual, the one that comes with the game is from the first release. There is an key reference card at the end of that manual that I linked.
I also recommend reading this guide here:

Time to bust out the waterboard and crack some NDA’s.
Too drunk to fix above post but there is a f14 server up on Hoggit. Might be a hoax, might be real. I’m getting off before I get something stuck in the ceiling fan.
