Holy CArp! Yeah that was… intense.
Perhaps a student was asked to take lead? LOL! My understanding that helicopter is still in development so the pilots would be test pilots my guess. From what I’ve read of that helicopter, pretty interesting in terms of it’s primary design was to be able to fly high in the mountains all around India because normal helicopters have a hard time flying in that thin air.
That is a sharp looking helicopter. Nice sleek lines which look like a hunter. I want one as a DCS module.
The only helicopter I’ve seen that I like better is the Bell (if it ever flies). The only thing offensive to my eye with the Indian bird is that vertical trim-fin with the tailwheel. I get why, but it’s not a great look to me.
I am equally offended by that tailwheel on an otherwise sleek looking design. Makes perfect sense to have it there and probably makes it easier for reloads, field maintenance etc…but it just doesn’t look good.
They just needed to let the Rafale designers run their eyes over it briefly at the concept design stage - I’m sure they would’ve come up with something sleek and elegant to solve the problem with
My guess, purely a guess, is that it helps with crashworthiness. Sikorsky’s coaxial Raider is the same. Again guessing, but it looks like in a pancake-type crash the design aligns the maingear with the collapsible direction of the seat while immediately breaking the tailboom, taking some energy out of the crash.
all they need is skids
This is really awesome footage. The only thing is the music. I can imagine the pilot singing, “I’m so happyyyy! I’m so happyyyy! I’m so happy to be blowing things uuuup!” Notice that the PNF has his fingers lightly on the cyclic, like I’ve read about how Huey pilots did in Vietnam. Looks like they are masters of the loft delivery method too.
some amazing flying in a big heavy helicopter… and they had the fans on
The fans make it go faster. I have some high-school physics so I know of what I speak.
I thought the low level stunts we were pulling in DCS MP servers were fun but silly, stuff one only does when it’s a sim and you don’t have to worry about the consequences of blinking…
Ukrainians: nope, hold my beer
Also just noticed that they dont have any form of aiming, no gunsights or even marks on the windscreen, and how many fields were set alight with those flares launched at that (or lack of) altitude
I am actually surprised that they included the low level flares in the video. When Russia was setting fields alight they simply accused Ukraine. (Fortunately farmers have cell phones too). Still, this just plays into Russia’s hands.
Watching that video and seeing how it looks, yeah…that is one mean looking helicopter. I also love the idea they have for the pilot-machine interface. Looks like the F-35 with rotors basically. Very cool.
