Sounds like HP did some solid thinking on the G2…
Maybe it is a matter of personal perception, but at 45 with ASW, the picture looks silky smooth to me (2080ti).
I doubt therefore that 3080ti will be necessary. The current G1 does not need more and let’s not forget that with this resolution no SS is really needed.
As far as I know, the G1 has issues with 60hz mode so I hope the’ll get it right this time ![]()
And half-res… if someone needs it then Reverb is perhaps not the best product to buy.
Still… light cable is good but not a breathtaking improvement. Same goes for controllers and more cameras (for me; of course flight simmer talking here).
Pitty that higher FOV is not coming. Though I still hope for much bigger sweet spot and perhaps also design which will not make us see the physical edges of the screens.
Still, I am looking forward to the 3rd party reviews
and stay cautiously positive ![]()
I was pretty adamant that I wouldn’t go with another WMR headset…but it checks all the right boxes in every other way…
High resolution… (but scalable).
Good Sound
MECHANICAL IPD
Good lenses.
Four camera tracking - not quite as good as the Rift S which has five, but plenty good enough for simming.
Also, while I really like the Oculus platform, I don’t think that PC gaming/simming is ever going to be their main focus. So…pre-ordered. Hopefully I’ll be blown away!
Makes it very scalable for lower end systems making the G2 accessible to a larger audience. A lot of comments about the G1 says they won’t buy it because they would need a new PC. And, when they get a new PC, down the road, they don’t need a new HMD.
I think it’s smart.
I might add that I was using my Reverb on my last computer…which was a GTX1080 (not ti) and it was fine. Obviously the 2080 is better…but the 1080 was giving good results too. What is a 1080 comparable to now - a 2070? or a 1660ti (this number system confuses me)…
Pilots can only count to 360.
I know, I have the same problem.
I think people react to all those pixels and think that their rig isn’t going to cut it.
I’m thinking I would like a 2080 Ti to with my Reverb order. But hearing I can half scale the G2 I’m thinking I’ll just go ahead and buy that and wait for the 3080 GPU’s to hit the stores… But I can’t, ‘cuz pre orders are US only… ![]()
It’s the ones that can count to 361 or 362 that worry me the most… ![]()
I’ve heard, and it seems logical that with, for example, 2x the pixels density you don’t need to mess with the PD slider anymore (1.5x, 2.0x, etc). Thereby making it a wash; the processing time to ‘scale’ pixels is longer than just transferring/displaying them.
Though the Inner Workings and Hidden Movements have a say in this - it’s never that simple.
Of course I’ve not tested this.
Yeah, @fearlessfrog pointed that out to me a while ago. A lot of VR users were already pushing Reverbian amounts of pixels with SS/PD, on their early HMDs.
I noticed that when going from Rift to Rift S I could drop PD back from 1.5 to 1 and still get a better picture. I guess the same applies for the Reverb, in principle. But I still think adding a half res mode is a smart move as that will make those with pixel anxiety more comfortable… It’s just a software mode, after all.
As a current Reverb user, I’m somewhat tempted by this for a few things. 1.) lighter cable 2.) better audio if it has speakers like the Index and 3.) better comfort if the headset is like the index. With all that said, I can’t justify buying a brand new set unless I was able to recoup a decent buck from the sale of the G1 on the used market.
Yes! Yes! All of you, please, buy now, test in the Fall and report back. Then I’ll get mine on sale sometime around Christmas, depending on how HP decides to do their sale. o7
You mean G1 or G2? ![]()
So now I feel like I did when I pre-ordered the first Rift… Fall seems like a long way off!
Patience is overrated… ![]()
We live in the era of instant gratification. So i want it, and I want it NOW! ![]()
There… I feel much better now
.
Give me that and at least 150-Degrees FOV and I’ll sell a body part, or two (to pay for the screamin new computer I’d need). ![]()
Hands-on preview.
That sounds very promising. As you may know I was not very happy with the Reverb. While I have kept it and still use it to play Half Life Alyx, I have quickly switched back to the original Rift for my DCS simming. It seems that the G2 adresses the points which lead me to turning down the G1 (bad lense, bad tracking).
I vowed to never buy HP again, but this really looks like a very nice package. Also the involvment of Valve helps to sweeten this up a bit (they generally know what they are doing).
Interesting read indeed and it does “kinda” sway me towards wanting the set. However, the items the author describes as problematic with the visuals in the G1 are something I honestly have not noticed in my unit so maybe I’m not as sensitive to it as others? What I’d REALLY like to see in a G2 is better color saturation from the lenses as in comparison to other sets I’ve tried the HP feels more “washed out” in brightness of colors.
One thing that I feel is overdone in the G1, or perhaps is affected by mura more than other VR headsets is sun glare. When I’m either flying or driving, looking directly toward or up to almost 90 degrees off the sun’s direction, is blinding. Does anyone else have this and how do they mitigate it?
