HP Reverb G2

CV1 has quite severe godrays. Especially on high contrast point sources such as stars in space.

The Rift S is definitely better than the CV1 in that regard, but even with the CV1 it wasn’t a show stopper IMHO… much like SDE, your brain just filters it out after awhile (or you learn to just ignore it).

Yeah…honestly I feel that way about FOV too. Having worn glasses most of my life, I swear restricted FOV just feels normal to me. I wore contacts a lot between my 20s and 40s, but the older I get, the more comfortable I am wearing glasses because it makes my eyes less tired feeling. Having those frames around my vision for most of my life probably conditioned me for 130 degree FOV in VR…

130? Think my O+ is only 115 ;(

It is said in the video that Valve has helped with designing the lenses. They are not the same. If I have caught it right the Index uses a 2 lens system and the G2 uses a single lens.

I am still hesitant about jumping on the VR wagon, but I am getting closer and closer.

My biggest holdback is that I at times are prone to get migraine. I tried a moving Rollercoaster ride last year and in 15 seconds migraine started to set in.

On the other hand I also tried a moving Parasoaring sim, Racing and a elevator and step of the building thingie without problems. Okay apart from nearly stumpling when hitting the ground and everything turned white. Orientation was defenitely lost there. :sunglasses:

MRTV will be getting the G2 soon :open_mouth:

I am looking forward to his review.

First shot through the lenses:

Let’s wait for his comments vis-à-vis the G1. It is difficult the judge from the footage just like that.

I am actually getting excited :star_struck:

Colors look great. One thing about the rift S is I feel the colors are a little washed out compared to a 2d monitor. That looks amazing. Wonder how the frame rate is? If that’s a PD of 1.0, doesn’t look like you need supersampling.

Exactly. @fearlessfrog won me over with this argument, earlier. A lot of users force this kind of pixels through their GPUs already, with supersampling. With a Reverb you can see the actual resolution…
Now, Pimax just released videos of their 8KX that will have both eye and hand tracking… I want to believe, but remain skeptic.

Do we know what GPU he is running it on ? and what is your current HMD Troll?

I’m using a Rift S. The Reverb resolution is like running my S at 1.5 pixel density (1440x1.5=2160).
Now, that’s not entirely true, because the Reverb has got square screens of 2160x2160 and the Rift S has standing 1280x1440 res. But it should give us a fair comparison of what’s needed to run the Reverb. Another matter is that you may not need as much anti aliasing in the Reverb. For instance, MSAA in DCS is a big performance killer.

As a G1 user, I can confirm that nothing higher than a PD of 1.0 is required for me to achieve a pretty darn clear and sharp image. However, the G1 does NOT have a lot of color vibrance which is a downside for me.

I agree. No SS or PD increases for me. And the colors are definitely inferior to the Odyssey + OLEDs. I preordered the G2 because I loved my G1 so much.

I’d also have to agree with @Kinger with regards to the G1.

MRTV regarding the sweet spot:
“The sweet spot is way better than before, so you have a clear picture from edge to edge…”

If that is really true, than I can see some important expenditure coming later this year… :vr:
I am getting sold  :vr:

He said hes driving the G2 with a 2070 in Alyx, so I guess the resolution at 1.0 wont be any worse for the wear than running a rift S with SS. Looking like a good upgrade at this point.

I recall that on my O+ with some SS, my GPU was pulling pretty much the same number of pixels as it is now with my Reverb G1 with no SS. And the picture quality is way better on the Reverb for sure.

I think @fearlessfrog once made a more scientific post about that. Sorry, I can’t find it now.

Even with shipping to the UK…I’d be interested

Just a short info: MRTV’s review of the G2 should be online on Wednesday.

And if you like to pre-order in the EU for about 584 EUR (VAT included and 0 shipping), here is the link:

(saw it over at Il2 forum)
