Hey guys, I’ve begun experiencing some instability with DCS in VR lately. What happens is that usually during session initiation, as in click Fly, I get a blue screen in the headset, still hear the game sound on the headphones for a few seconds, then the screens go black. The headset reboots and SteamVR and DCS both shut down. At first it was rare, but now happening about 50% of the time. If I get a successful launch, the session is fine.
My setup is an RTX3080, with the latest Game Ready Nvidia drivers. SVR resolution is 100%, DCS VR preset, and PD set at 1.0. I was running FSR, but uninstalled trying to regain some stability. It works fine in other sims, notably FS 2020 and IL-2 BoX. Joining a multiplayer server causes it to happen more often than not.
What steps to make sure DCS is back to a default build? Should I run a repair? Delete any specific folders?
I got similar issues and it turned out they were tied to my pagefile settings.
I allowed a pagefile of 64GB and DCS in VR immediately allocated 40-ish GB of it. I had been running on a pagefile of 8GB which never caused any issues before.
Since upping the pagefile allowance things have been rock solid again.
I read some articles about RAM and pagefile in combination with SSD’s and their dislike for many read/write operations.
Some guides claimed a page file wasn’t needed at all with large amounts of RAM. But I read that a long time ago.
Had been fixed at 8GB since and never had issues until going VR on the G2 in DCS on my 3080Ti. I reckon the increase in resolution and DCS’s (un)optimization let the issue surface.
There are some buried answers on ED forums as well that led me to increase page file allowance. So far it worked.
I tried uninstalling SteamVR, WMR for Steam. Switch between beta and non-beta.
Reinstall Nvidia drivers cleanly, reinstall WMR portal. Nothing worked.
Huh, I did a page file adjustment a ways back myself. I’ve never had the mentioned issue. Either dumb luck or coincidence. My issue is Discord and switching between VR and Headset/Mic. Always something.
I never had the issue with the G2 on my GTX1080 either. Possibly because I was unable to pump up the resolution to full in order to keep things playable.
Seems logical to assume lots more data needs to be shoved around now that I use 100% res and perhaps it caused the limiting factor to show?
Perhaps its placebo and it fixed itself magically somehow.
All I know is that reinstallation of all software, DCS repair, driver cleanup, Windows Update, etc did not work.
Once I upped the pagefile to 64GB all my crashing vanished as snow in the sun.
I will add, though, that for some weird issues have started by using Motion Reprojection with the last versions of WMR for SteamVR.
I am not running MR so it might be a good idea to test with it off.
I determined that it was the FSR mod RC2 causing the instability. Too bad, because it is giving me a huge fps increase. I may play around with the config file at some point, but right now I’m happy to have stability back. It mostly affected MP missions, so was hard to troubleshoot. The other thing that I noticed is that when I spawned in without FSR enabled, there was a lag before sitting in the pit, something that doesn’t happen without the mod. Will continue the discussion in the FSR thread.
HP actually want me to return the old one… Hey, it’s their money.
I haven’t tested the cable yet. I bought some of that clever cable sleeving and it’s supposed to arrive today too. And besides, I’m working this weekend. Don’t have time for more than a quick test anyway. It will have to wait until I’m off the roster on wednesday.
Tested my new cable today…
Plugged it in to the GPU and the USB C motherboard port, which didn’t work with the old cable. The G2 was discovered immediately! No issues.
Flew around some in DCS and everything worked perfectly, again…
Is the tracking…I dunno…smoother?
Or is it simply me adjusting to the new and faster PC hardware?
I think it is actually soother. I noticed the improvement when I got the new cable. Prior to it, my tracking would lag or glitch occasionally. So far tracking has been smooth and consistent.
I was going to say that the overall image quality is better, but today I’m not so sure. There is less flakiness. The experience seems more stable, and I haven’t had a CTD yet.
I wish I could sign up for one of these new cables on-line. I don’t like the idea of talking to customer support … any quick key words I could use to score one of these babies? I’m thinking I could just tell them I have an AMD system and it won’t work ha ha! I just hope they don’t try to tell me to do some troubleshooting as it does work … I just want the better free cable.
I just told them I have an AMD system and my G2 won’t connect unless I use a PCI card and even then I experience occasional blackouts and crashes. I also told them I read about a new cable would solve these issues.
The customer support was well aware of all this and just said they would send a new cable. They just asked for the serial number of the headset.
Nice … I’m on an online support chat now … he’s just confirming my mailing address.
Done deal … two business days.
If they ask you if you have all the software, firmware and drivers installed just say “absolutely”.
Oh crap, I have to take my Alex Tech cable cover off and install it on my new cable now! Man, I was sweating and my fingers were giving out just installing it on my old cable ha ha!
