The lenses sit tight in the headset and are not easy to take out. With the WidmoVR lenses on my old O+, I was able to remove them easily when my friends wanted to give VR a go. Not so easy stuff with the VR optician lenses in the Reverb though (not a complaint, just a feature).
Thanks for that reminder. Iāll check my file tonight when I get back on my PC.
Last night I did some guns only dogfighting with some friends for about an hour and a half. Again, the additional Reverb clarity is certainly appreciated here as itās just easier to spot aircraft and using VR zoom figure out what direction they are headed. The lighter weight of the headset is also a welcome feature for when you are whipping your head around looking for that bandit or trying to figure out how to get him off your tail The downside is that cord does pull the headset down on the left side and it felt like I was constantly trying to reposition it.
The Reverb is winding its way from Chicago to Vancouver, BC either by truck or enthusiastic tortoise, taking photos and sending postcards at every small town it comes across. Itās like a whole series of Littlest Hobo Fedex Edition!
Iām actually fairly shocked that Fedex drives the thing by road for that far. I know nothing about shipping but is this normal, as in wouldnāt this normally go on an airplane for that sort of distance?
So not flying sim related, but tonight I gave the Reverb a try in both Euro Truck Sim 2 and Iracing. No complaints in either as the added resolution just continues to impress me vs. the Index and makes gaming so much easier on my eyes. This really is the resolution I expected in VR 2.0.
I also fiddled with the head straps and have got the HMD to be a bit more comfortable. One downside Iāve noticed in most titles thus far (although more in Iracing than others) is the lack of color in the set. Itās a very washed out look where the Index was very very vibrant in that regard.
Itās not even just an OLED/LCD thing for me. I think the colors look washed out even when you compare against similar LCD sets like the Rift S and Index. Is it enough to be a deal breaker considering the resolution increase? Probably not, but I think itās worth noting if you are a gamer who really likes colors to pop.
Yeah, I must have come into WMR at just the right time as Iāve had absolutely zero complaints about setting this software up and itās integration with Steam VR. Yes, itās another layer I wish did not exist, but if things continue to work in this manner Iāll be a happy camper.
Who am I kidding, I know MS will destroy this with some upcoming patch to Windowsā¦
I spent some time flying with trackIR on my monitor the other day and even my 32-inch LG monitor which uses a VA style panel has much better colors, contrast and blacks then the Reverb.
I wish we could simply adjust the brightness, color, etc for HMDās the same way you can for a monitor. Bumping up Nvidiaās digital vibrance would help if it worked.
The pale colors of the Reverb were also very apparent to me. After switching back to the Rift while my defect Reverb is at HP, the difference in colors was striking.
My assumption is that HP considered color saturation to be an area in which they could skimp a little based on their intent to really market this product to enterprise/business customers as opposed to gamers. The fact that their headset has been so readily accepted by gamers was just a bonus.
I havenāt tried it in a while and will do tomorrow, but doesnāt the OpenVR-Advanced mini app work in terms of being able to change saturation levels etc? The Reverb uses a LED screen that is going to lack some nits (I love that word) compared to OLED, but curious to see if the adjustments help or not?
PS The Littlest Hobo is now in Oregon. It stops for gas on the I5 somewhere north of Seattle and then rushes the open border. Still showing as turning up tomorrow.
Itās in Vancouver now. US ā Canada custom inspections are very quick that way around, so they probably just marked it as a toque and waved it through.
Ok, arrived and set up. Some thoughts in random order:
Box arrived. All in original HP packaging. Good sign. Not exactly shiny, but nothing not in the retail box. Heavy snow (a Vancouver āheavyā of 0.5 cm) here, so Fedex guy looked like he was evaluating his life choices. I signed his pad with a happy face but I donāt think it helped much.
Oh, the Reverb is tiny and light when compared to O+. Surprised so light.
Argh, that cable is thick. I feel like Neo being plugged into the Matrix chair with this plank coming out the back of my head. I use the wireties and secured to the circle at the back.
Man, these controllers are a pain to pair. Tip: hold them really close to the headset at first. I ended up just pairing the O+ ones as they feel a bit rounder and nicer.
Serial number 929, so not a recalled/refurb. Shame, but not shocking for 40% off retail price. Letās see if it actually turns on and works thoughā¦
Wowsas, that screen is insanely clear. No scratches on lens, no sign of wear, so far so good.
Mini Disaster #1. Left earphone is sort of intermittent. Like a cheap pair of earphones āfiddlingā with it makes it work or cut out, so a reason to send back.
Oh, thereās a headphone socket on the headset. My nice earbugs actually sound really good, as in some bass now. Probably better than the O+, as I didnāt realize how better (relatively) expensive earbuds could sound compared to over-ear stuff. Hmm.
WMR Cliff House - goodness thatās clear. Desktop completely usable.
Headset on/off detector seems worse than O+, in that I had to do that stupid Win+Y ādesktop focusā thing a few times. Could just be the facepad moving over the sensor, or problem #2, not sure.
Flew in VTOL VR, DCS and played Talos for a bit. Just put SteamVR to defaults. Really really nice display. In DCS you can see everything much more clearly. Ground spotting is very different. I was expecting it a bit more washed out, but it looks good to me. Too bright for whites, but not awful. But man alive, that resolutionā¦
So now if it lasts a couple of days I have to work out what to do. I will contact the seller and tell them about the earphone, but I probably need to decide to send it back or not. Iām going to do a soak-test for 48 hrs so if the old connector is bad then Iāll find out, as thatās a non-negotiable send-back thing.
Mudspike, youāre my only hope, what would you do? So far Iām in love with the resolution, so thinking I might put up with the earbuds but go chance for some more money off, i.e. ask for more of a discount and just keep this one. I could just as easily just send it back, but that could be a while back/forth shipping etc. This is with Amazon so usually pretty good service. Hmmm.
Are the earphones detachable, like on the Rift? Can you swap sides with them?
If so, Iād test the faulty one in the other side. If still bad, try to get them to send a new one.
But I guess you already thought of that and tried it.
In that case, Iād RMA it. What if you want to sell it in one year? Anything not working will reduce itās second hand value.
I donāt ever really sell anything, but I agree I do need to do at least something. The issue is that they only ever had 3 to sell anyway, as a HP refurb outfit, and didnāt mean to sell it to me in Canada. I would get they would just ask me to ship it back, refund me and then Iām without it.
The trouble is I donāt want to give up this screen. Iāll keep soak testing it just to see if anything more serious goes wrong.
Thereās a simple screw for the left / right earphones and I took off the left, it looked ok, tightened it up properly (it was quite loose) and that fixed it up (at least so far, they both work well now.
I still might take them off and use buds as the sound is better, but it just does look like a loose connection.
You mean thereās no excuse for me to not be productive in VR? Ackā¦!
Yeahā¦Iāve had that happen too. And Iāve had times when Iāve put it on and its gone sort of grey, but hasnāt turned on. Rebooting WMR seems to fix thisā¦
Yeah. I feel the lightness is a bit too much. But looking back at some of my through the lens photosā¦the colors arenāt too bad actually.
Hmmā¦I mean, if youāve found a reasonable alternative to the headphones (some people do that right off the bat), I might see if you could get some money off. Iād give it a whirl for the next 48 hours in several simsā¦might want to try out some racing ones too. See how you like it watching a movie in the Cliff House too. I actually thought it was pretty good. With a bit more discount, this might get you through to VR 2.0 or 2.5 or whatever we are calling what will be beyond the current crop.
