That’s cool. Did you have a WMR headset prior to the Reverb? The software is a bit clunky…but whatever. The thing that I remembered was going from the O+ to the Reverb was that first time I put it on and the WMR Cliff House opened up and everything was razor sharp. I was like…whoa! It is awesome when you can finally read gauges and MFDs in planes.
Cool. I whined at FedEx and got my delivery date got shifted to Jan 9th. One thing VR fans can do and do very well is whine - it’s our superpower… ![]()
This is my first WMR headset. Honestly, so far I’m not finding it to be a big deal. I just fire up Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR and away I go.
Yes, the clarity is a HUGE HUGE HUGE step up from Rift and Rift S IMHO. Index? Maybe slightly less so, but to get the Index close to what you see at native resolution with the Reverb you have to use some super sampling which we all know is harder on the PC. Case in point, in my quick DCS testing I was using PD of 1.0 and zero MSAA and the image still looked darn good and I was getting acceptable frame rates with motionvectoring on “auto” at a 90hz setting.
One thing the Index absolutely CRUSHES the Reverb on (for me anyway) is comfort. Yes it is significantly heavier, but the design of the head mount just works much better for me than the Reverb.
Coming from an Odyssey Plus it would have to be pretty bad for me not to wear it. Here’s a photo of the one guy Samsung designed it to be comfortable for…

Haha…I’m one of the guys that modded the heck out of their Odyssey + with a cushy top piece and VR Cover faceplate and custom lenses…so I found it very cozy putting it on. I think the Reverb is lighter…by a good bit…but not quite as comfy as my modded O+. Of course, the O+ makes me sleepy when I put it on.
One hint that sometimes isn’t apparent is that you do need a good bit of light in the room with the Reverb (and WMR headsets in general) to provide the best tracking. I’ve found on my night shifts if I have the lights down too low, I start to get glitches in tracking.
Yeah my gaming rig is in the basement and I always have overhead lights on so it’s not a huge deal. If I was doing VR involving motion outside of sitting in a cockpit or a race car I’d be more concerned.
I agree. I’m going to do the zip tie mod tonight to see if things improve. I’m probably a bit less sensitive to the whole cable weight deal though as for every headset I’ve used I’ve draped the cable over my shoulder so that it goes down the front of me instead of behind. I find that with it behind me (on any headset) that my movement in my race seat tugs on the cable and drives me nutto.
Given the reduced comfort of the Reverb vs the Index, I sure wish somebody like VR Cover made something for the Reverb. A quick glance at their website doesn’t seem to show a listing for the Reverb.
VR Cover would be nice to try if they had it. The Reverb leaves a red mark on my forehead and a line in my hair down the center of my head. Then the wife has to make some comments about that of course.
My other annoyance is the cable so I’ll have to try the zip tie mod. Now I just need my lenses from VR Optician. Having to put in my contacts for this is getting old.
@BeachAV8R - did you get prescription lenses again for the reverb? How’s the room up front?
I did not order a prescription lens yet. I would like to. The room up front is tight, but moreso because of the size of the eye box. I can wear my smaller pair of glasses in there…but my bigger set of glasses is a no go.
Several people on the Reverb thread over on the DCS forum say the lenses from VR Optician are great. I’ll share my thoughts when I get mine. Ordered on the 31st. No ship notification yet.
Strange, I’ve thought my Reverb Pro to be very light and comfortable, save said cable. Former Odyssey + user is probably why.
Light yes. Comfortable? Marginally.
That cracked me up…as I glance over at my O+, complete with fat Velcro head-straps, new face pad, and speakers bent outta the way (my Sony’s fit, barely, but sound soooo much better).
Apparently WMR for Steam updated today with an improvement specifically for Reverb?
They took the WMR for Steam beta app and put it to the main release. I was on the SteamVR and WMR betas anyway.
Don’t forget any updates reset your vrsettings file, so you might need to reenable motionreprojection etc
Hmmm. Just did a flight and, well, it looks a bit sharper (O+). Don’t know what happened, and I ain’t gonna look gift FPS in the mouth (was able to reduce that…er…re-sampling thing-a-ma-jig…from 1.8 to 1.5 to get about 5-8% back).
EDIT: Ok, I did, before running DCS, check/set the VR Pre-rendered frames in nVidia Explorer - set it to 3 cuzz that setting had the lil nVidia logo next to it; assumed that’s what they wanted? Scientifically speaking, it just looks More Better. Would love about 90-degress more FOV now :]
