HP Reverb Redux

Ah, sorry to hear that @MBot :frowning:

A couple of things seem to come out of this for our small sample size:

  • HP VR quality is not good, as it seems to be a lottery and that’s not acceptable for the sort of money these devices are.

  • VR experiences might have a degree of personal experience variation, more so than any other peripheral. It makes it almost impossible to recommend it to anyone else when our eyes/ears and even head shape can have a big impact on if it is effective or not. It can literally make you sick, which must be a first for a PC add on.

While I enjoy VR I don’t think it is for everyone and that I’d never buy anything VR without the ability to get my money back easily.

There is no doubt about this. Any headset should have a money back return policy. It’s really the only way to evaluate the sets out there to see which one works best for you. Gosh knows I’ve been through a number of them thus far…

Reminds me of DLP technology for projectors. Some people would never see the rainbow effect, but I saw it the first time I looked and it drove me crazy. Never could handle watching anything DLP.

The DLP I have now is so bright compared to the old one that I can’t go back. I just need to remember to look away from the screen prior to trying to stand up, move my head quickly or, sometimes, blink …

In other words I feel your pain!

Sometimes my Reverb gets stuck in 60hz mode. I can tell right away when it does this. Quick fix is to unplug/replug the USB. Anyone else experience this?

Yes, I’ve had that happen. You can definitely tell it immediately.

Does it change field of view when it goes to 60hz mode? I think I read that as a complaint in SteamVR, as in the 60hz mode is preferred by some (to avoid reprojection in DCS etc) but it does something funny with the display format. I’ll give it a go later, as the WMR app allows you to ā€˜force’ 60 I think.

I didn’t notice. All I know is that when it launches into 60HZ mode into the Cliff House, I can see the flicker in the whites…I can tell instantly that it is in that mode.

Ok, so it sounds like many people have this problem so it’s common. I didn’t notice any change to FOV when running in 60hz mode but the flicker is enough to make me sick so I stick to 90hz.

If you launch into WMR or SteamVR and notice things aren’t smooth it’s probably stuck in 60hz mode. I’ve found a quick replug of the USB gets it back to 90hz mode.

In native WMR it is very noticable to me as well, in that I can see flicker if I use the WMR app / Settings / Headset / Experience Options and force 60Hz. Once in DCS and SteamVR is seems a little better, maybe because less white. I can just about manage a solid 60fps, so it is nice not to use reprojection at all (I think some people are super sensitive to that), but down low in the weeds it will reproject and drop down to 30fps.

I prefer it at 90/45 for sure though. I have my setting forced to 90, so perhaps that prevents switching, as the default setting is ā€˜Automatic’? Not sure.

Yep, I have mine forced to 90 as well and have not noticed it go back to 60.

Now that being said while we are talking feeling sick, I had a doozy yesterday afternoon after doing A to A dogfighting for about an hour (and losing badly I might add) on a MP server. That moving your head one way while your aircraft is going in a completely different direction had me queasy for a good bit afterwards.

Never happened to me but sometimes out of blue I get the Error 1-4. Unplug / plug the USB cures the problem. I have not traced down the cause yet :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Interesting. I have mine forced to 90hz in WMR also. I don’t think I had the problem until I forced it to 60hz a while back to try DCS without reprojection. What version of Windows 10 are you guys on? 1909 here.

1909 here as well.

Yep, 1909 for me too.

Status report on Littlest Hobo. Working great, can’t get it to go wrong so far.

I looked up the serial # on HP.com and it has 7 months of warranty left, with global support etc. I msg’d Voodooimaxx on reddit (thanks @BeachAV8R) and he said ā€˜if it has warranty then swap it out for a v2’. I’m obviously tempted to do that.

Now I have to work out if I contact HP.com in the US and get them to get it from Canada or just start with HP in Canada and do it that way. I think HP Canada only sells the Pro, and this is a consumer edition, so chaos may ensue. Either way, not super excited about dealing with HP support for an exchange, but I guess it makes sense to do so?

I have some e-mails for the US support that can take you right to the people responsible for the Reverb exchanges if you want me to PM them. You can maybe pull out your Mudspike credentials and tell them I put you on an important and time critical project…

That may lead to a sale in Europe…!

There are people who can get sick pretty quickly IRL just being in a car or on a bus. They can get sick even from staring at boat or airplane

@smokinhole can share how many people got sick as passengers in aerobatic plane.

I would say this is a feature of VR :
ā€œIt can make you sick like the ā€˜real thing’ (insert vehicle of choice) !ā€

Now you mention it, I said to my wife over dinner that I was spending $600 on a 3rd VR headset that might not even work and she did look a little unwell. Weird how the power of VR can do that…
