HP Reverb Redux

One thing I don’t understand from the video…
It looks like the headset is stationary, but the view pans down anyway… Why does it do that?

I change the view with the mouse (free camera). This is just to show that this is unrelated to tracking.

I see! So the same thing happens if the view is controlled by the headset…
Very strange.

Updated Il-2 (17 GB, apparently I have bought Bodenplatte at some point  ) and tested it also there. Also in this sim, after about 30 minutes of playing I get blackouts when looking at the ground (in-game camera, not headset). I guess that is good, because it means it is not a software issue with DCS.

Further testing confirmed it is a heat problem. Putting the headset out the open windows into the cold November air, the blackouts go away after about 5 minutes. Taking it back inside and putting it on a table, blackouts return after about 10 minutes. I repeated this 3 times now.

I am now going to file the warranty return.

Beer made me do it!

Sounds like a really strange problem. But I agree that it looks like the problem is with the headset.

That definitely sounds like a hardware problem, one which you shouldn’t waste any more time IMO. Return that defective POS either to the reseller or HP. I haven’t had any blackouts or heat issues, which if memory serves, was a problem with the first run of headsets. I’ve done 3 hour stints and had no more issues other than a full bladder and arthritis  .

How do you like the Reverb? I’m worried about performance though. I’m on a 1080Ti, 32GB ram and i7-6600k. Is your machine a lot more powerful?

I love it. But I do have a 2080Ti, 32GB RAM, and an i9-9900k…

I see. That’s the hardware I presumed was needed… I’ll get one once my old rig becomes obsolete.

Over Thanksgiving, I had the pleasure of introducing the F-16C and F/A-18C via the Reverb to two of my brothers and three of their sons. I put them in the Viper first and let them fly around Dubai. Next I demonstrated a CAT 1 landing in the Hornet and then gave each of them a cat shot, followed by some time around the boat. While they were all impressed, at least one of the dads and one of the sons took to it very enthusiastically, to the point that the others complained about not getting enough stick time . Hoping that one of the sons found it motivational enough to pursue flying further.

Does the Reverb require any towers for positional tracking? I’m currently using the Rift S and looking to upgrade to the Reverb Pro.

No, but you can’t use it in the dark since it uses the surrounding objects for tracking reference.

You’ll probably find the Reverb tracking to be not as good as the Rift…which CAN be a factor in combat type sims where you are looking around aggressively. Whatever you do, buy a Reverb from a place with a hassle free return policy…given the lack of IPD adjustment (other than software) and the initial bad run of hardware, I always encourage people to buy the Reverb with an immediate ability to have a hassle free return.

Nice guitars!

Thanks taubkin. Two of the three sisters. There’s a Strat sitting on a stand by the amp and love them equally. Unfortunately, as much as I like them there, I’m going to relocate to the opposite wall, further away from the HVAC vent. Even with it closed, too dry in that location. Time to break out the humidifier.

Pulled the trigger on the Reverb Pro for $599 from Amazon yesterday. I should have it by Monday. It looks like they’ve discontinued the consumer version? I couldn’t find that one anywhere.

I’ve owned the Samsung Odyssey and O+ previously. I’m hoping the reverb offers enough clarity to finally make me a VR believer. I’ve got the hardware to back it. i7-8700K @5Ghz, 32GB RAM, NVMe and 2080TI. Hoping for a smooth experience with this setup.

The reverb seems to be the most popular headset for DCS currently. Is everyone on here still happy with theirs?

Very happy with mine.

My only problem with the Reverb is that I haven’t got one…yet. Was a little bit put off by the initial hardware problems, so I decided to wait. Seems like that has been sorted now, though… But I’d like a 2080 TI to go with that Reverb, but now I think it’s smart to wait until the 3080’s to arrive.
Perhaps I’m just procrastinating… Maybe I should swipe the Visa and be done with it…?

I was also waiting and watching this one. Hardware issues seem to be mostly resolved now so I went for it. Can’t wait to try it out!

I also switched from O+ to Reverb and am happy simmer (well, I was before that too).

The Reverb runs great.
