IL-2 Desert Wings - Tobruk

Makes sense. I never have had ugly prop syndrome. Running G-SYNC though.

Ha! Of course :). Ah I see you are flying CLOD, not Tobruk, oops my mistake

Tonight I made it a 2D night on CloD. No contacts, not HMD. It felt so retro playing on a monitor. I was not used to it but persevered. The 109 got 3 kills and I was having fun. But then I went Brit and the Spitti was not catching the 88’s. I quickly realized my rad bindings were off. More testing needed but I liked it. Getting closer to buying it…

I find that I have to manage the prop settings more actively with the Spit that with other aircraft in the sim to get the most out of the aircraft. For sure you can catch 88s and do slashing attacks on them. Recommend respecting their gunners.

Can you please elaborate on the prop pitch? I just push the Spit till I get it shaking then back off a bit. In retrospect, I beleive the reason I was not catching them was because my rad and oil coolers were wide open. I have resolved them but did not go back in the Spit yet. Its going to take time getting used to playing in 2D.

So last night I caved in. There is a LOT OF CONTENT here to explore. Wow! I had a lot of fun. Flew the D-520 a 109 a Beaufighter, Spit, and I have not scrapped the surface. There is a few Fix it Again Tony’s aka Fiat. There is bombers, biplanes… I just hope I can get acclimated
to flying on the flat screen. So far, so good.
Hope we get VR sooner than later thou…

Yes, like how you would manage a prop in a GA aircraft, fine pitch (higher rpm) for climbing, and corse (lower rpm) for speed, given the same power setting or manifold pressure. Some folks like to set it at a certain rpm for fighting an leave it there, but I find that if you adjust it for flight regime, that you can get a bit more speed out of it.

Old mission generator ported over to Tobruk. Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, but I think I’ll give it a whirl once I finish my current campaign, for comparison:

Oh, cool…

Just some recent news from the devs about VR implementation for Cliffs of Dover Blitz and Desert Wings - Tobruk:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/46837-il2-cod-blitz-vr-support-when/?do=findComment&comment=1081467

Just to let everyone know the background to upgrading to allow VR:

- Obviously the code needs to be re-written to allow use of VR. This can be done quickly, which often leads to problems like not being able to see properly to the sides and behind, or it can be done carefully… the path we want to take.

- Aircraft Cockpits which were not previously 100% 3D require those elements updated… so these are the original game aircraft types

- Aircraft cockpits have to be updated to at least 4k… some larger cockpits need more resolution

- We need to introduce Physics Based Rendering system… (PBR) This is because to get the really high quality 3D effect you need either extremely high cockpit resolution, or you need PBR… we want to use PBR

More of the details of our schedule will be announced hopefully in the next few weeks.

I’m glad they’re still thinking to work on this. Bought Tobruk and love the content, but I just can’t fly flat screen these days…

This does seem to add more fuel to the “was all the time invested in the CLoD platform really worth it?” line of thinking. The platform sounds pretty limited based on all the work they’d need to do, including an overhaul of the rendering system.

I guess there’s a reason the IL-2 Great Battles series was continued on the development of the Rise of Flight Digital Nature engine.

CloD took the old Il-2 engine from 2001 and probably did all that could be done with it. That was 10 years old at the time CloD came out, and now there’s been ANOTHER 10 years.

DCS started with the latest evolution of the Flanker2/LOMAC/FC engine when BS1 came out, but as time went on they’ve made massive overhauls through A-10 then DCS World and its iterations.

BoX is technically the newest engine as RoF started well after Il-2 and Flanker 2, but like DCS has had a lot of improvements done under the hood. While BoX today and RoF still have similarities to the eye, you can tell they’ve put a lot of work into it.

No disrespect to TF, but they just don’t have the resources to do a rebuild of the Il-2 engine to bring it into the 3rd decade of the 21st century. They’ve done great work with what it has.

Sure, all that makes sense for the first DWT release. But seeing the work required to go VR, Im left wondering, “Ok, but now does it make sense for the devs to approach 777 about migrating their work to BoX?”

Im certain its not a copy/paste job, but figure all the historic knowledge/ research, skins, and even 3D models could be converted at some level to start. Then programing the models becomes to main thrust of work, but at least the research done helps give that some boost. Figure that versus the effort of rebuilding the rendering engine in CloD? I dunno.

You would lose clickable cockpits too, something which a few CoD pilots might not find amusing.

Yeah, losing the clickable cockpits would be a real bummer. I think CloD has the best mix of bindable controls alongside being able to click that switch that I use once on cold start and therefore don’t need to bind a key/switch for it…

So yes, chipwich, I am an old CloD player who wouldn’t view a port to BoX to really be an upgrade!

I’ve always thought the ‘feeling’ of flight in CloD to be pretty great. I’m also eagerly awaiting VR.

Obviously, it would be great for BoX to add early BoB and North Africa campaigns, but there is a lot to love about CloD. Hopefully the addition of basic VR turns out to be easier than they anticipate. Also, the CloD developers might have an easier time introducing carriers into the mix (I’m looking at you, Martlet!).

News on the Team Fusion Facebook page.
Good to see some VR info…

Hi all,

Here are images of the Spitfire cockpit as we move closer to VR implementation.

Our artists are busy working on 3D components of aircraft so VR uses will have the best visuals possible on launch.

Work shown in these images focuses on the throttle, trim wheel, fuses, cables, cable clips, bolts and chains.

All images WIP.

As we progress, we will share more images of this very exiting development of the Blitz and Tobruk games.

No date has been set, as we are still in early development.

Regards,

TFS Team

On the official Il2 forum, they also announced that when the time comes they will call the community for VR beta testers.

Happy to see progress on this front.
