Today I’d like to tell you a story about how our Tempest Mk.V came to be. Every once in a while, I get to stop being a producer and just be a fanboy and add something to the simulation to fulfill a dream. When I saw how well our Spitfire Mk.Vb turned out, I knew I wanted a Tempest added whenever possible. There is something very cool about these British birds. I knew a Tempest built by our team would be awesome.
I just updated IL2 after a hiatus thinking this aircraft was out. Disappointed, but I realized after firing up Kuban, the trees and scenery are demolishing DCS Georgia big time. Something has happened between when 2.5 first came out till now, but the IL2 Kuban map is stunning.
If, like me, you thought the cockpits >were a bit too cramped in IL2…
Too small? I find some of them too big; and none feel the least but small to me. The I-16 feels nuts on. The P-40 feels huge, as if the distance to the pedals is 7 feet or more. It might be that VR appears proportioned differently to different observers.
I was fortunate enough to sit in a Bf109 twice (G-6 and G-10) and for me the proportions in VR seem to be bang on. It is pretty cramped when you’re over 1.90 m
Theres the ipd the hmd outputs to so to say, and theres the ipd the software assumes. The distance between your virtual eyes. This should be automagic but it works better if tweaked manually.
I have never felt the size was off in any sim apart from once in Aerofly FS2, but that was a bug.
The IPD is the distance between our viewpoints and thus determines the stereoscopic angle, which controls our perception of distance and depth.
Now, even one eyed people can perceive depth and distance, but that’s because the brain compensates by adding experience.
I wonder if this is a factor for me. I mean, even if the IPD is slightly off, my brain could be adjusting the experience because I know the approximate distances in a cockpit…?
