I was able to put a about an hour and a half in Korea this afternoon. Still dialing in my graphics settings for the Quest 3. Overall, I feel like this is a solid progression from the Il-2:GB series.
The terrain is great, the aircraft are interesting, and I’m looking forward to more missions and campaigns. It appears to do well handling large air battles with masses of bombers and fighters, better than Il-2:GB currently does.
Hopefully the frame rates continue to get optimized, especially over the cities. I appreciate that it appears they are using procedurally generated radio calls, but it’s a little rough at the moment.
I have a Saitek Pro Flight Quadrant that I use for water, oil and cooling flap controls. I’m either having trouble getting it mapped correctly or the sim hasn’t fully implemented advanced engine controls yet.
If anyone has any luck I’d love to know what I did wrong. Throttle, RPM and mixture work great.
So i jumped right in and it looked ok, not great but Ok.
I watched this andbits a lot better,
I found the Zoom in Keys and did some A2G in the '84. Here is an aircraft that i love for its pure goofy style. The body of a greyhound, a cage for a cockpit and big as a Repubic Aircraft should be. The rockets are hard to aim and the guns suck. Still its fun.
Black Thursday in the MiG was no trouble. It was quite beautiful.
The game is quite beautiful and makes me wonder, who can top this? DCS is in a league of its own. However, i beleive that IL2K will offer hours of enjoyment. The sounds arefirst rate, the animation is unreal. The weather is something else too. I am quite content.
I’m getting pretty solid 72FPS just using OpenXR with the graphics set to high-ish. I need to give Virtual Desktop another go, both for Il-2:K and DCS.
Changing setting on the Quest made a big difference. I think By just changing to 90hz you can get higher fps. Of course it depends on your hardware. I might try 72hz to see if i can turn up the quality. I flew the Bomber escort in the Sabre. The Sim is ridiculously good, im not.
IL2K got my attention
I was getting a lot of headset crashing at 90hz on my old PC hardware and haven’t experimented with anything but 72 since I upgraded. Add that to the list along with Virtual Desktop.
That being said, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and my current settings are completely playable.
Last night I decide to make a FFB profile for the Mustang, F-86 and MiG-15. I used the DCS profiles and just copied them. I have the MOZA base. The Mustang came to life and I fired the guns… Chills man! I am peeling this one like an Onion. I will experiment with the La and Yak later…
I’m enjoying blowing things up. The game looks great from the cockpit, the environmental effects adds atmosphere(pun intended), the rain, the cloud, etc, to the hunt
It is Friday here in Seattle and I have been home for 7 days. In them 7 days I have not touched my beloved F-100D. My first day with Korea was setup and poking around. The setup of controls is quite good. Last night I found the Holy Grail… Custom Modifiers can be added using your Joystick. No more blindly reaching for Shft, Ctrl or Alt. You can now assign buttons on your controllers to be Modifiers.
I sIowly got aquainted and distracted by the museum. I then got the graphics looking good and had another go. The sim is beautiful but more than a pretty face. The Ai IMO is far superior to the one in IL2 BOS. I have had a couple of very good fights with the Ai. One encounter in particular stands out. I was following a MiG in and out of the clouds. The clouds are some of the best I have ever seen. But that slippery MiG kept getting away from me. Frustrated I kept firing burst till I ran the guns dry. Through my frustration I smiled. The Ai is good.
Its the user experince that I am trying to highlight. It is as entertaining as a sim can be. It feels alive. The missions, the flight dynamics and the feeling of flying and fighting in a first gen fighter is there.
I think this raises the bar in certain respects. Listen up ED. There are aspects of this that makes me wish DCS would take into their sim. Now, is it perfect? NO. Sometimes if feels cartoonish and I think ground attack needs some work. The Ai is by no means perfect and I still wish for clickable controls. However, for a Early Access/Work in Progress it is doing a very good job of keeping me entertained. And the set of aircraft that are here now and the ones yet to come in a modern beautiful sim?!? You cant get this anywhere else for the price of a solo night out. Dont try to take your partner somewhere nice now a days for the price of IL2K. You get my point…
I flew with friends on combat box. It was a nice time. I’ve got the settings dialed in a little better and VR runs decently. Drag modeling on everything, especially induced drag, is quite low. Planes glide like a Discus. Tracers are overdone from a distance. Over all the game looks great. The map is massive. This was definitely the best experience yet for me.
is anyone else getting an almost instant CTD when running a second flight. for example just had a go in the shooting star and the first mission was the air to air combat exam, ran beautiful, hit fly again, it loaded into the sim I hit the “P” key to un-pause and got an instant CTD, seems to happen on every plane
EDIT … think i cured it … apparently IL2 Korea does not play with with oculus toolkit, removed it and did two flights in a row
