It's here.....! (and other VR thoughts)

In DCS you remain in first person. It’s pretty cool actually. Bang! There you go… You remain in the seat until reaching the proper altitude (at least in the F-5E, which is almost the only aircraft I have flown since I got the Rift). Then you separate from the seat, and out comes the chute.

I think @EinsteinEP was thinking of the DK2 DX9 Rise of Flight support that isn’t available anymore, as the Rift SDK moved to DX10 up.

Possibly…
Would be great to fly RoF in VR though. I can’t think of a better suited VR sim…
No detailed instruments or HUDs to worry about. Just close quarter, bare knuckle, man to man knife fights…

So my VR demo went really well, I brought home a new friend… now to set it up.

Really liked the touch controls that come out in Dec, will probably be picking them up eventually.

@BeachAV8R so when do we reveal the long con of the site, in that it’s just a gateway for emergency payday loans?

So has anyone formed any opinions on “big cockpit” planes and FlyInside with either FSX or P3D? I still can’t seem to get the demo FlyInside working with FSX…it launches and I see the flight window, but the ENTER SIM or whatever box never allows me to click on it to get into the VR mode. I don’t know what the deal is. It works perfectly in P3D (and I bought the full FlyInside product for P3D) and right before I left I was trying it out with the Roland Laborie A400M and I was just blown away by the size and scale of that large cockpit. It is really cool. Of course, distance from gauges is a bit more of a challenge in a truly big cockpit, but I’m learning to use the zoom key…so I might be able to get over that hurdle, plus I’m still experimenting with game resolution and sim settings. Is anyone using FlyInside on any heavy metal and are there any particularly compelling ones that seem to really stand out in VR?

Our user base is going to be listless and lazy for the next few months as they all go donate plasma to fund their VR purchases. LOL…

(And I changed the thread title since it’s evolved a bit…)

I’ve only used the ‘Ye Olde Stock’ 737 and 747 in FlyInside. Let me jot down my steps to start it, as perhaps we can track down where it is going wrong. 2 secs…

OK. So I start Steam and then:

  • Start FlyInside FSX (that version, not the P3D one, as there are two I think)

  • Rift starts up. Shows the FlyInside UI and then ‘Hit a button to bind head reset’ message.

  • FlyInside shows two windows now within the Rift. On the left ‘Waiting for Sim’ and on the right it show the menu buttons and a desktop view of start screen for FSX:SE. I use the ‘Large Desktop’ button on the bottom right, pick a ‘free flight’.

  • Hit ‘Fly Now’ in the large desktop FSX menu, and then FlyInside swaps to a full screen in-cockpit view.

Where does yours differ?

Bummer, looks like my aging Asus motherboard’s USB 3.0 controller doesn’t work with the Rift (it uses Asmedia USB 3.0) so I can’t get the sensor to work, will have to order a PCIE USB 3.0 controller to make it work…

For anyone thinking about going VR you can check if your USB 3.0 controller will work by downloading the Oculus Compatibility tool from https://support.oculus.com/1633938460220125/

Going to try to find a workaround, otherwise will have to wait until Mon afternoon for the Amazon delivery drone to arrive with the goods.

That’s exactly how my FlyInside start process goes for FSX but the “waiting for sim” message never switches to “fly now” for some reason, even though the right pane is showing me in the VC cockpit.

Bummer about the USB @Kludger - hope you can get a port working or get the card very quickly…

@Kludger I believe that someone posted on this forum a similar issue, and had good results with this USB board from Amazon.

F9 to force VC view again? Maybe an add-in or screen/window setting is different to mine?

Thanks @chipwich and @Maico , ordered that USB 3 card.

I made a quick trip to a mom and pop computer repair shop who said they had a PCIE USB 3.0 card, brought it home and it turns out it has a Renesas USB chip which Oculus also doesn’t support…

Oh well, I guess I can’t take the blue pill until Monday afternoon, unless I want to keep wearing the Oculus just to see a Virtual Reality placard that says “Your system is not compatible”…

I know that some folks out there don’t have a very high opinion of Cpt. Sim, but I’ve always thought that they were “study” enough for my investment. In other words a good ROI. The Capt. Sim B777 works really well in VR IMO. The panel is surprisingly readable to be so vast. Some screens, the pit ones from my left ocular.

I’ll give it a shot tomorrow when I get home. I haven’t really spent a lot of time troubleshooting it…so I think I can get it squared away with a bit of research and investigating…
