I am closer and closer to buying MSFS. XP just crashing on me because of some custom sceneries, yesterday it worked, today CTD at loading scenery.
I have to say my first VR flight kind of blew me away. I have a middle of the road aging machine and using WMR and the Odyssey+ everything was smooth. Took a spin around my backyard from Skagit (KBVS) to Renton (RNT) and things only lagged on approach. But as it’s a built up area I wasn’t surprised. Turned down a few settings and things settled. I think this is going to be an amazing VR sim.
I have just uninstalled and deleted everything MSFS 2020. The Microsoft Store version.
I will probably get back to it later, but for now the good looks are not enough to keep me interested.
Some of the reasons are:
• No Helicopters
• Danish Ortho some 3 years old. (There is a new Ortho set available each year for free here.)
• Resource hog (Hopefully they will get around to optimizing it over time.)
• I don’t like the way that you are dependent on the store and Xbox for starting and updating the sim.
• Heck, there are no indications whatsoever, when Windows decides to log me out of the store Xbox account. The sim just goes on a startup loop.
• I find it wrong and unsettling that Microsoft Windows Defender keeps on asking, whether I want to allow Microsoft Flightsimulater acces through the Firewall. I have just deleted 20 entries for the same file in the list. This only happens with the flightsimulator.exe file. I just think that Microsoft products ought to be better at playing together.
• The final board for the coffin this time, is that the last couple of days it has taken a very long time to get to the firewall part and then a very long time to get to Press a Key and then it just loops.
I don’t feel like doing any more troubleshooting at this time, so it of to the shelf for MSF 2020 for the time being.
Happy Simming
I took the MB-339 for a run on the Mach loop, and I have to say the visuals and feeling of speed are excellent. 320 knots or so feels a heck of a lot faster in MSFS than say the Viggen at well of 600 knots doing the same thing over the Caucasus or Syria. I can’t wait till we start to see more AC in MSFS.
I have a very limited brain. If Mudspike is Oz then I am a tinman (or was it scarecrow? See?). MSFS may be great but I just don’t have any remaining neurons to process a new sim. Yes, I know it’s easier than DCS. But having read most of this thread and seeing the countless mods, workarounds, registry entries, etc, the thought of diving in seems more like work than play. Once Austin and the team throw in the towel and I feel safe unloading XP I’ll be left with no choice. One that happens I am sure I will love FS.
I bought MSFS2020 yesterday, installed and tried it today… Straight into VR so I wouldn’t get spoiled by pancake settings.
I had read up on the tips and tricks here at the forum. First I ran it through Steam VR. Made WMR the OpenXR renderer and installed the OXR dev tool to turn on smoothing.
I am impressed with what this sim can deliver on my 1080ti…! It looks really good even on low settings and very fluid! Yes there are some reprojection artifacts, but that will probably be solved further down the road. If ED and 1C/777 could do it, chances are the the Asobo team can do it too. This is the first VR release for MSFS, so I guess a little patience is called for.
A little tweaking of the software and a new PC in the SimBox and I think this will be very interesting…
I still need to make friends with the controller assignments and find out why I have to enable VR everytime I start MSFS.
It is a magnificent sim already, but yeah, there are some important things that are still missing.
But I see great potential there.
Yesterday I took the Pitts for a joyride around Sedona in VR. I almost puked after 15 minutes but it was worth it.
To be honest…most of us are tinkerers by nature, but I would put forward that MSFS without any modifications whatsoever is a really, really great experience. Particularly now that it has VR, although that part is in its infancy, and doesn’t offer as much interaction as X-Plane or Aerofly FS2 (at least I think it doesn’t have yoke and throttle manipulation). But you can download it, run it, and use the default scenery and really have a great time exploring stuff in VR.
BUT…and this is a big but for you in particular - no helos yet. That might be awhile.
I see this mostly from the enthusiasm and the participation from the third party developers already. I just feel like MSFS has a totally different vibe and momentum than Flight did. I’m optimistic that this one might have legs…
I‘m still waiting for the combination DLSS and VR. MSFS is big enough of a title to make that happen.
My 2080 is not quick enough for the resolution of the Samsung O+.
It‘s great times for simming, that‘s for sure!
Microsoft might use DirectML (a sort of DLSS equivalent) when MSFS moves to DX12U and the Xbox port next year. They are unlikely to invest in Nividia’s DLSS, as the console is all AMD. It’ll be a while coming though.
My 2080 runs a Reverb pretty well, but I’m comfortable (edit: spending untold hours) changing settings.
Fearless, you‘re a fountain of knowledge! Thank you, I appreciate it.
I think I should change my VR settings lower to get more FPS. Got limited time to tinker right now, so as soon as a 3080 crosses my eyes at 800€ I‘ll probably jump the gun.
I modded my old case already to increase air intake and allow for long GPU‘s. Bring it on, market!
@DanTDBV I was in your shoes a few short weeks ago, just a few posts ahead of yours. And then VR came out and I am having the time of my life and am excited again for MSFS. Hopefully when you reinstall it will be in better shape… And so say all of us!
I notieced the same when I was testing MSFS
wondering if this is going to be updated somewhere down the road or they just run the orthos through the AI (colors correction, clouds removal, …) just once at the beginning and thats it?
did somebody checked if the ‘world updates’ like the one for Japan and USA featured ortho update or not?
IIRC they said how long re-building the whole world takes, and it was a day or something.
They said they plan regular updates for the ortho in the same Interview IIRC.
If I had to make a guess I’d say that central Europe has a better chance of getting an update than other parts of the world.
Japan was basically a test run, the USA was because data is well available there and most players come from there.
(Parts of) Europe might be next because there are lots of European players around and it is rather easy to get data for most countries there. However it is pretty dense, so they might go for somethibg easier before that.
Hm… I bought the premium deluxe version, or what they call it. The most expensive one.
Where is my Cessna 172?
Edit: Found the content manager…!
The weird thing is: the very first time I installed the sim everything I own installed automatically, but when I reinstalled I had to click on everything manually, no clue why.
Same thing for me too… just when I thought I was done downloading stuff I found I had another 30gb to go!
On a different topic, it looks like the CJ4 is fixed (for the most part). I just took it up to FL400 and I am getting Mach .77 (TAS 447) with a fuel burn of 1200 Lbs per hour. Right now I have over 4.5 hours of endurance with my remaining fuel… so the CJ can now tackle some longer legs. Pity this fix wasn’t available when I needed to cross the Atlantic!
Is there a chucks guide 5o the CJ4?
I’m not sure that the MSFS CJ really warrants the time and effort that Chuck would have to put into it. It’s nowhere near study level.
