Microsoft Flight Simulator - Post launch impressions

My wife just sent me a picture of mine, it says installation finished.

Lovely! Took a restart, reinstall and now it’s downloading again. Bit weird since I didn’t clear any cache and happily continued with the installation process and skipped over menu’s I already navigated through on the first go.

@TheAlmightySnark … Casper, have you tried Fearless’ advice. That fixed the problem for me. I had to reboot afterwards but it worked just fine after that.

Hadn’t tried it yet but that will be a good next option!

So far download speeds are a tad slow though not unexpected. Would have been nice if they had run it through steam’s servers because this is going to take a bit more then an hour to get the 90’ish Gb now. I think it does 2gb in 5 minutes or so. How are you all experiencing it?

Looks like updating Windows, the MS store and the xbox game bar is mandatory:

So download speed isn’t too bad, it just swings between downloading a bit and then installing it to disk.

+1, this worked for me. It’s currently downloading.

So now that I have the release build I can more confidently comment on some things.

The King Air is way underpowered at least on the takeoff roll…it is very slow to accelerate and even at mid weights it takes forever to get off the ground. It was that way in the Alpha and continues to be very wrong. The FSX King Air 300 flight model was actually quite a bit better.

What is the key to turn off the instrumentation overlay in the external view? I had it set in the Alpha…but can’t figure it out now that my keybinds reset…

I just noticed that the marketplace is unlocked.

Yeah. Kind of surprised that Carenado Cessna 182 or whatever has the default MSFS G1000 (which is pretty horrible). I would think they’d want their own rendition of that in there… :man_shrugging:

So the release build added some planes that I didn’t have in my Alpha/Press build. I was hoping the 152 Aerobat would have some tweaking to the flight model that would make spins more believable, but alas…no…they are the same as the 152…so I’m not quite sure what has changed between the two variants.

I’m guessing their priority was getting something out there on release day.

Rudder authority is still way to pronounced on the light piston aircraft. Just a tiny dab of right rudder is enough to negate all the left turning tendencies…and the rudder is way sensitive. We could use some sensitivity sliders or something on that axis for sure…

Love the 152 cockpit though…flipping on that red flood light takes me back…I can almost smell it…

Would also be nice to see non anti-skid brakes on the aircraft that aren’t equipped with them. Just putting the brakes to the floor should incur some penalty (blown tire)…

Found it!
General > CAMERA > Chase Camera > Instrument Heads Up Display (HUD) > OFF

Can you customize it, or is it just on/off?

Wondering if this has to do with the ā€˜trigger’ style brakes that previous FS titles used. When brakes are a binary all-on or all-off thing, makes sense to build in some anti-skid style properties, as the user has no other way to modulate braking.

Of course, in an ideal world, that would be an option to enable/disable.

As of now, just ON or OFF.

Anyone else finding the trim commands kind of sporadic…like sometimes you get barely any movement, but sometimes you get a burst of it? Specifically talking about the Cessna 152 / 172…but probably other aircraft as well.

EDIT - I have mine set to a POV switch on my HOTAS…not an axis…
