Modern Naval Warfare

Sounds like one I will circle back to in a few months after it has matured a little. The price seems reasonable enough for an in depth (excuse the pun) sim.

Thanks for taking the bait! If/when you have time, curious to hear about the AI crew (are they really unable to commanded/don’t track anything?)

I watched a few streams and from what I can gather – and keep in mind these were pre-release builds – the sonar operators are pretty competent whereas fire control is pretty useless and should be done by the player if you want it to be any useful

I have since been able to engage the AI for the sonar and the fire control but I haven’t managed to have them do anything yet. Need to do a bit more experimentation.

On the surface, the enemy absolutely does not care. they aren’t even moving which may be why my sonarmen struggle.

When diving, you have to manage the valves for a bit. You also see them venting, one of them just front of the vertical fin. The reason my pitch was so bad earlier wasn’t the games’ fault, it was user error

The people are finally working for their paycheck.

More user error I am sure.. but it went straight under the ship.

I got lucky and it turned around.

Screenshots look Amazing

Modern torps are designed to do that, they don’t actually impact the hull when used in an ASuW ‘mode’

Yeah, I bought it for the same reason.

Yeah, a lot more optimisation needed. FPS internally is OK, the really bad framerate/stuttering is with the external views… but I can live with that, for now, in the name of ‘realism’ (i.e you can only see outside if you are looking through the ‘periscope’).

Oh I am aware how the ADCAP works. But it didn’t explode there.. it went on for another mile or so before turning back and ramming into the side of the hull.

What do you think so far?

On the original release date I was keen to insta-buy it, no matter what. But the delays made me think about it and now I see it’s also available via Matrix directly, Modern Naval Warfare - Game - Matrix Games and I usually get 40+% discount code in December for staying a loyal customer with Matrix Games. Guess I’ll revisit the store page in that time, unless something sways me again…

Cool, thanks guys for the info / reports - probably going to hold off just a bit till it’s a little less rough.

Smart, I get those coupons too but the past couple of years they’ve sat unused - if it’s still looking pretty rough that far out I’ll have to remember use it.

An early, early access game… if that makes sense? As mentioned the external view frame rate sucks. Hopefully the enemy AI isn’t too far off and the tutorials leave a lot to be desired for a ‘game’ that simulates systems as complex as this. People who don’t have any time with Janes 688i and/or Dangerous Waters would be pretty frustrated with it I reckon.

I’m hoping that Jive Turkey comes to the party with some ‘training’ videos.

I am still figuring stuff out and overall those who are thinking about getting it are probably better off waiting, but I am happy to be a crash test dummy for the fence sitters. It has the potential to scratch an itch that Cold Waters didn’t quite reach so there was pretty much a 100% chance I would have caved sooner rather than later just to see for myself.

What was the ‘run to enable’ distance set to? maybe it didn’t ‘activate’ until it had passed the ship?

But hitting the hull, that is something else for them to work on IMHO.

He did stream it quite bit and he mentioned that he plans on doing tutorials.

So.. I’ve finally found another minute to dabble into this and things have become more clear to me. The AI crew is all there and it is basically as @Derbysieger said. The sonarman is excellent, the ESM guy does his job decently but the TMA is off 100% of the time, and usually by a landslide.

Spawning a combat mission on the surface again, with the target in sight. Time to get set up and diving.

In the past, my poor diving and funny pitch angles have been due to complete absence of management of all the valves. Now I know what to do. Cool is that they also modeled all the air getting blown out. If you do it under water, you get bubbles. The nose is already sinking in.

Lets have a look while getting under.. Oh a LHD! Having the sonar below the photonics is incredibly useful.

Some blips and flashes from the LRF as we lase and range her.

Trying my hand at manually controlling the trim.. By default at low speeds she still holds funny angles

Bit too much nose-down here for my liking.

Sonar has been doing its job for a while and I find the solution believable.

ADCAP away.

Steering..

Mid-course looks great

Looks great just before.. uhm.. before pitbull?

She took that hit and is still steaming for a bit.

Planning to finish this..

Harpoon away

Cool HUD

Took the bait

18kyds! That thing steams. Also that is so far away.. Like should be over the horizon far away.. Maybe something is wrong.. or there’s a technical issue.. or I am getting jammed?

Sending 3 more..

Too low.. Terrain.. Too low.. Terrain..

Man that water physics looks good in my opinion. I never get through and surface properly. Reason? Not using the blowers hehe. I’ll do better next time.

So yeah this game is VERY much in early access. But I already love the systems and the attention to detail. There’s a lot of things here we’ve never seen before in a submarine sim. I just really hope they make it run better, smoother timewarp, lots of content and better combat. Heck even some voice acting could do a lot to bring it to life!

Bonus pic of a Kilo I found somewhere out there during a mission.. I was not able to localize him and fight him.

Haven’t been able to mess with the demodulated noise as well as I could in 688i. It was way easier there.

I can hear the props very nicely, but unable to make sense out of anything in narrow band.

I really, really, REALLY love the raytracing on this boat.. for years we’ve been told about layers and ducts. How sounds get bent under the waves and how that can help you see both really far while also making shadow zones nearby.. the boat draws it out for you and it’s an amazing help. No longer guessing how the sounds propagate under the water.
