In the sim racing world, it’s been shown that one should not automatically equate quality with quantity. It’s a number that manufacturers like to use when comparing products, but after a point means nothing more than we have big motors.
What I think about most is- even if this base has the most amazing FFB system ever… how accurate is actually the modeling of the forces when it comes to aircrafts?
I haven’t used anything of the sort since my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback pro was replaced by my HOTAS warthog in 2010…
So true. Perhaps there are some general rules with regards to fluid dynamics, performance, and FFB feel, but baring that, wouldn’t there need to be curves created per aircraft? Just some mental gymnastics about my learning to drive a sailboat recently and my surprise at how nuanced helm input needs to be while racing. One would think that simply pointing the bow port or starboard would be enough.
The more people fly with FFB sticks, the better the support for them will get.
I’m not planning to replace my ~€500 Virpil stick anytime soon, but I’m still excited that all these FFB sticks are coming out: this will lead to better support and will raise the bar of realism and immersion in consumer simulators…
And then perhaps one day… it can feel as good as that EC135 stick.
The end of force feedback dark ages in flight sims is nigh.
Both very good points. I guess that if I get this I can check how good it is vs the “sort of the real thing”
In DCS (and IL2) I use a G940 which has a new neck on it that allows me to use a Virpil grip on it. The thing doesn’t have anything in the way of force compared to what these new units are claiming, but the things I like about it are:
-
when trimming, you trim the force away and the stick stays where it is.
-
in warbirds there’s a distinct difference in the feel of the controls when you’re slow (they’re “floppy” or “soft”) and when you’re fast.
Just for those two things, I’d take FFB for my centre stick every time. In some modules you get additional bonuses (like in the DCS F-14 I can feel the buffet through the stick a tiny bit before it becomes really audible, which gives me some more info about what the plane is doing).
OMFG YES!
Point two is why I want a base capable of wrestling me. I want to hnnnnggggh pulllll that bird out of a dive.
G940 never cut it for me, I hated its sloppy deadzone and low resolution too. The throttle was pretty badly made too. But I hardly flew choppers back then.
Yeah, the 940’s not great… it was literally the only option for me though
Like flying the real Sim, amirite? That was a good FFB.
Actually I found the stick forces in the real sim quite manageable. I trimmed for smoother flight and easier manoeuvres, not because I was getting tired. Yardwork arms eh
Oh I agree!
What I meant is- it is cool to have actual good FFB in the simulations.
It is insanely good. I appreciated the fully realistic helicopter cockpit, seeing each other completely and the all around out the window projections, but none of them made nearly as much difference for the experience as the FFB. That alone really made the helicopter feel so much more real than my home setup.
and they are actualy weaker than in the real deal, at least the EC135 sim I was in vs EC135 irl.
and ‘thats ok’, I mean it doesnt have to be 1:1, as close as possible is also acceptable, as in our desktop sims
Bang on the money
Available now for pre-order. $549 for the base. $169 for the grip.
I love it, and I think the price is not exaggerated.
That said… I’ll have to wait.
Part of me wants to bite but now that I know Winwing has one in the works, I will wait a bit. Then, I’ll wait some more for the second or third iteration. Learned a lesson when I bought my G2.
VirPil announced they will reveal their FFB entry here soon. I have to wonder how far behind that puts them. I’m sorely tempted to order the Moza base. My main concern is how I’m going to mount it without a simpit.
As am I, but I want to hang fire until I have seen comparative reviews of the different offerings on the market. The price is within play-money budget for me, but it would edge out other toys or put those back a bit.
