MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR RELEASES WORLD UPDATE XVII: UNITED KINGDOM & IRELAND

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

The United Kingdom and Ireland are renowned for their intricate history, iconic architecture, and beautiful landscapes. From the northern reaches of Scotland to the southern tip of England, this region offers a fascinating mosaic of natural, and human made elements. The update includes 16 TIN cities, 79 Points of interest (POIs), and 5 handcrafted airports.

Microsoft Flight Simulator partnered with Bing Maps, Gaya Simulations, and iniBuilds to create this latest spectacular offering for aviators. Microsoft Flight Simulator World Update XVII merges recent aerial imagery, digital elevation modelling (including LiDAR coverage), TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface modelling, and hand-crafted airports.

World Update XVII includes:

  • 16 TIN cities:
    • Bristol, Brighton, Greater London, Heathrow, Leeds-Bradford, Liverpool, Newcastle-Sunderland, Welling, and Wembley in England
    • Cork, Dublin, and Cliffs of Moher / Liscannor in Ireland
    • Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland
    • Cardiff in Wales
    • Gibraltar
  • 79 points of interest (POIs):
    • 31 in England, 13 in Ireland, 5 in Isle of Man, 11 in Northern Ireland, 1 in Orkney / Scotland, 9 in Scotland, and 10 in Wales.
  • 5 handcrafted airports:
    • Farnborough Airport (EGLF) and London Stansted Airport (EGSS) in England
    • Cork Airport (EICK) in Ireland
    • Sumburgh Airport (EGPB) in Scotland
    • Cardiff (EGFF) in Wales

The update also includes eight activities: three discovery flights, two landing challenges, and three bush trips. Soar above Dublin, Ireland; Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland with the update’s discovery flights. Try your hand at landing at London’s Stansted Airport (EGSS) in an Airbus A320neo, and Ireland’s Cork Airport (EICK) in a Daher TBM 930. Take long tours in this region with bush trips in Scotland, southern England, and Wales.

Isn’t it mind boggling how far we’ve got with desktop simming?

Nice.

They must be able to use this work in MSFS2024, at least to some degree?

Of course, all of it. The world model is just data.

If I had to do an educated guess, then MSFS2024 is a non-free update with a couple bigger features or enablers for bigger ones.

Maybe they rewrite a bit of existing code as it’s an opportunity to break backwards compatibility as well, to get rid of old legacy.

But why would they start anything from scratch, throwing away what they have? Nobody can afford that.

Schéin!

This is a preview. The release is planned for 6 August 2024.

Mind, there is another 727 in the works by SWS & FSR scheduled for MSFS 2024.

I hope it turns out to be good! A classic turbo jet would be an instant favorite for me.

I’m hoping Heatblur will bring that A model into DCS…

initialy I was skeptical about these modules in MSFS but more and more (presence of quality developers like HB; actual problems with DCS/ED; …) makes me believe that MSFS could be the right place to fly

I was interested until I saw the glass panel, nope. I don’t care if it’s better for GA flying, old warbirds need to be steam gauges for my sim’ing.

That looks awesome! Will go nicely with my KLu F-104G in MSFS.

@jenrick I spent the first 80 seconds thinking “But they will offer a classic cockpit option at some point, right?”

It’s already there.

Yeah, it could serve as a base… I mean, it is quite open for modding and there are some aircraft with very detailed systems out there. Devs can also tweak the flightmodelling quite far, it seems.

agree. I always liked the premise of F4 AF iirc. the dificulity was scalable from beginers to the pros, on the same server. this same apply to MSFS minus the combat.

what I realy like about DCS is the performance. MT is great!

Okay, what I get for clicking through the video looking for the steam gauges. Well that’s a relief.
