I just think that’s stuff made purely to show off and represents the bad side humanity has to offer.
I’ve come to pretty strongly avoid store-bought rotisserie chickens. Variable flavor, often dry on delivery or progressively dried in the store warmers… Getting a good one is like winning the lotto.
Now imagine this was in your neighborhood…
I threw together a recipe for confit byaldi tonight and, frankly, it’s probably the greatest veggie dish ever put together.
I literally had the same reaction Anton Ego had in Ratatouille when I took the first bite.
The recipe in question:
As someone living in Germany those vans are literally Godsent
That town doesn’t require a pizza chef.
That town needs a damn exorcist.
The city is Altoona, PA, btw.

I dare not tell you about all the blasphemies that are Japanese “pasta.”
Mentaiko Spaghetti is pretty great at least.
I had to look that up, but now I am keen to try it.
All I need to do is see if there is anywhere close where I can get the spicy cod roe… And convince the bride to make some fresh pasta.
If you can find a Japanese store, Mentaiko comes in easy single-serving bags that only need to be mixed with pasta. It’s almost as fast as instant ramen. If you find the raw mentaiko, just mix with butter and a bit of shoyu and toss with the pasta.
I might be able to get it from one of our large supermarket chains (Woolworths) in Canberra . It is showing as available in their Sydney stores.
Otherwise I might be lucky at one of the specialty Asian supermarkets… There are a couple of good Japanese restaurants in Canberra, one of which has mentaiko spaghetti on the menu. They have to be getting it from somewhere?
Well…it’s a tasty quick pasta. But hardly worth the drive for the experience. I love it just for the memories of the early years of my relationship with my wife. For me the dish is the very definition of “comfort food”.
You had me at comfort food. But I love salty, spicy, umami Japanese cuisine. So yeah, next trip into Canberra I will def get some if anyone has it.
Yes. Yes it is.
I found an Asian supermarket in Canberra that sells it (actually managed to get the last packet on the shelf). Super simple recipe (by a Japanese chef) - Cream, butter, a splash of soy and mirin, mix in the spiced Pollock roe. Add the pasta and mix/toss in the bowl. Garnish with a bit of shredded Nori, serve & eat.
Too lazy to make our own pasta and I could not get fresh spaghetti from the supermarket, so used fettuccine instead (I would rather do that than use dry packet spaghetti).
Wrong. It was definitely worth the drive. Easy to make make, distinctive Japanese flavours, an umami explosion in my mouth with every bite but no fishy aftertaste. I love it.
Kinda makes me sad how normalized it has become to waste food for something so mundane as social media fame.
You know, with this supposed “male loneliness epidemic” going on, I’m just putting this out there for any lonely dude that wants-I was going to say girlfriend, but frankly? If you’re into dudes, this still applies-needs to learn how to cook.
And, given my experience? I have absolutely no doubt that this is going to set the tone for the rest of the evening:
Well I’ll be… that was brilliant!
I was fascinated. I wanted to see if they were actually fixing something edible and were going to try it. Looks like they chickened out…
