I hate peas…but they are really good uncooked off the vine…
So I have neglected to keep updating sorry its been a strange few weeks
Sweetcorn and melons
Cauliflower and black kale
Show leeks
Cabbages like James and the giant peach
Tomatoes
And peas
We have peppers and tomatoes coming out of every spot in the garden. It is going to be great. Picked up some dill pickling mix today…my wife will be making spears with it. And in a few weeks, the house will be full of the smell of reaper relish being created. A small dab of it, with some cream cheese on a cracker…heaven…
Marisa’s Reaper Relish recipe is a closely guarded secret. I’ll see if I can pry it out of her though… ![]()
Wow! Exploding greenery! Bravo Zulu old man!
My batch of Trinidad Moruga Scorpion plants.
Just re-potted them and they are going great guns with this super mild weather this year. I’ve been dying to grow these bad boys for a couple of years. I have a bit of an obsessive craving for chilli with every meal. Its…a borderline problem to be honest
Wife found this the other day, I’ve been back and bought 3 more bottles since. It really makes eating the pasta and rice I eat most days in the truck super exciting
Its bloody hot. But has a really fruity flavour as well. I’m super into it
Our trees produces masses of cherries. We never get one. Just before they are ripe the birds swoop
Likewise with our peach tree. Just prior to ripeness…when the thought enters my mind to go get them…the squirrels strike.
- That may be a chipmunk. Regardless. The point stands.
Get some ‘Mirch’ - Kashmiri chill powder. Dust chicken with it, add it wherever you would use chilli powder or paprika. A rare day the ScoopD household doesn’t use it on something. Also get dried red Kashmiri chillis. Imparts a wonderful flavour as well as fire. Must tell you how to make Falkland Island Chili wine
.
We have lots of chilli plants on the go atm. I love green chilli chutney and also just pickled diced chilli. I made a lovely piri piri sauce with scotch bonnet I will post the recipe in the food thread when I remember ![]()
I shall go and look at the food thred.
I love scotch bonnet. I enjoy the more flavoursome sweet varieties as well. To be honest. I make dinner in the truck and then add something horrendous like reaper powder or scorpion paste just for something to do.
If I ever have a crash it will be like a giant can of pepperspray going off lol
Beautiful!
Tomato Horn Worms invaded the tomato gardens and did a number. I’m hoping I got most of them and there might still be enough time in the season to reap some additional tomatoes. The white flecks (in case you didn’t know) are the eggs of wasps that lay their eggs on the worms. They burrow in, hatch, and consume the worm. Brutal life eh? You could let the Horn Worms that have the eggs on them just go on since you’ll be hatching more wasps to help control the population in the long term…but in a small garden, just a few Horn Worms can wipe out the tomato leaves…
Peppers are doing well still though…we have some Habanero and Ghost Peppers just about ready to pick… ![]()
Shame about the pests, i lost a lot of brassica to the cabbage white butterfly and whole cauliflowers to a rabbit ![]()
We have had some lovely sweetcorn though and lots of tomatoes
@BeachAV8R that’s some awesome pulls, wish I could say the same.
Tomatoes tend to do well here but with our new house, where I put the garden seems like it wasn’t getting enough sun throughout the day so the couple tomatoes I planted had minimal production.
Had the same issue with where I had the peppers. Conversely, in previous years, I struggled with the peppers because they were getting fried in the sun (supposed to be 111 here today).
It’s a fine balance I haven’t figured out yet. The fact that we don’t get any rainfall over the summer months hasn’t helped, either.
We’ve found our gardens have a mind of their own. Some years we are flush with tomatoes, other years the cucumbers do particularly well. With not a lot of rhyme or reason to it though… Thankfully, our favorites are hot peppers of all varieties and they seem to do good every year. I wish we had the climate to grow avocados…
The additional challenge is that my wife wants to do all natural gardening with only natural pesticides…so sometimes we get beaten by the bugs. Probably better than growing that Monsanto 11th toe… ![]()
