Apologies for the late debrief from our Canadian round as I was on the road playing it. I really enjoyed that course with the wide open fairways and dramatic elevation changes. I went aggressive on the drives, but laid up on the middle game due to the winds. It seemed to pay off.
More of the usual missed putts, and a few excursions into the bunkers and rough as well. Overall whenever it seemed like I was getting it together, I’d do something stupid again. Not sure how I’ll fair with the winds, but we’ll see.
Well, that was ugly. Seven over, but it could have been worse.
My approach shots were ordinary to say the least, but I could not have read those greens even if my life depended on it.
What ‘should’ have been a hole in one on the 13th bounced out of the cup and ended up in the rough. Managed to save Par on that one and followed up with a double Bogie (after having to take a drop). The one and only Birdie on the next hole was a 7yd chip from the edge of the green!
Round 1: Started off early with a couple of bogies. Nerves or whatever. Eventually settled in. The wind direction was everywhere, but the speed was relatively low.
Double bogey on 9, I tried to get fancy with the wind and shot shaping and it didn’t work in extremis. The double on 13 I put into the water, and then caught the edge of the cup 2 trying to get off that dang hole.
I hate Torrey Pines. Like…really hate it. Every fairway feels convex. I’ll bet I only hit about three fairways off the tee. I was everywhere. What a frustrating round.
I did my first round and was -3 under with 4 to play already predicting my post match report of The Farner is back at the Farmer’s open, I ended up +1 over.
Second round I’ll post the card in a while, but had a decent round.
I think I went off in the brush on that hole…and was happy to escape with a bogey. Starting off bogey / par / bogey / bogey was pretty disheartening… I just couldn’t pull it together. That track is just really unforgiving of not hitting the fairway off the tee.
Just getting the next event lined up. This one probably looks just like @chipwich’s backyard. This one is based on south-east U.S. low-country (think South Carolina and Georgia)…and the course designer nailed the look. Now…don’t fret…there is a lot of water (a LOT)…but the course actually plays pretty fairly. Yes…you will probably get wet a time or two…particularly on the Day 2 low-country hurricane conditions… Should be a fun match with lots of great stories…
