My VR Settings & Tips

So you’re saying we can once again watch NetFlix on our longer flights?

I’ve not tried this, and will do later, but you should be able to start MSFS and get comfy on the runway, then start the WMR portal app with a pinned desktop overlay working (there’s a pin icon top right I think?). I’ll try now.

I should probably try it now…since I’m doing everything in my power not to do the things I’m supposed to be doing (writing articles). Amazing how every little shiny thing grabs my attention when I have real work to be doing. Sigh.

Yes, I suppose so  (though YT for me :vr:)

It’s fiddly but it works ok. I don’t know if you’ll need multiple desktops for this to work, but here’s how.

EDIT

  1. If you don’t have multiple monitors then you can try just using MSFS in ‘Window’ mode from the Options / Graphics setting. That seems to work, you just minimize it and fiddle with the window on top.

  2. Start up MSFS and get comfy in the aircraft. Don’t go to VR yet.

  3. Start the WMR portal (or put on the headset and do the calibrate thing, if you’ve got autodetect switched on).

  4. Once in the WMR Home thingy then press the Windows button on your VR controller and bring up the ‘Desktop’ widget. It will lag, as MSFS has a bug that doesn’t share resources nicely when not focused, so hopefully they’ll fix that - just fight through the lag soldier!

  5. Bring up a browser or whatever in that desktop view and then hit ‘Follow Me Pin’ top right - it’s an icon that looks like this:

  1. If you have multiple desktops then turn off the ‘automatic switch to’ here using this icon - once clicked, look out for the ‘toggle’ on the bottom left:

  1. Go back to MSFS and ‘Ctrl Tab’ to enter VR mode. You’ll see the desktop you picked overlayed in VR. You can use the VR controllers to move it around and resize it, plus interact like it’s a mouse, i.e. pause Netflix. You can untick the ‘Follow Me’ icon as well, and it’ll stay in place.

  2. Enjoy your favorite apps in VR so you never fall asleep in the Airbus again. Here I am enjoying Task Manager, which provides hours of enjoyable watching. Season 2 is a bit dry, but I’m sure ‘Antimaleware Service Executable’ is up to no good, the cad…

PS @PaulRix you’re right, the weather in the PNW is so awful right now…

Performance seems fine, very usable. Bonus inception pic

CptLucky8 over on the flightsimulator.com forum found a real neat trick for SteamVR and Valve Index users.
In short, by reverting to an older version of SteamVR beta, for linux…? MSFS can now be run super smooth, even with high’ish settings on the Index. Now I can finally apreciate how gorgeus this sim looks and feels in VR, and it’s just… wow!
